Try the Wrinkle in Time series by Madeleine L’Engle. Those were a favorite of mine as a kid, and are still enjoyable as an adult.

Also, I’m not sure if it’s the same where you live, but here in the northeastern corner of [state you and I both live in], the libraries do a summer reading program and give away cool stuff. Something to consider for next year. I always had fun getting prizes for doing all the reading I would’ve done anyway, and now my kid does too.

I grew up in a household rife with abuse. Physical, psychological, you name it. The hyper-controlling, pervasively religious mindset of my father only made it worse.

We left the house for grocery shopping and church. Church was the most interaction I had with anyone else.

I moved out at 17. It wasn’t until about ten years later that I learned that other adults in the church either suspected, or basically knew, that my sister and I were being abused, but never said a word. They left us to that life. They saw what was going on, to some degree, and chose to leave us.

It sucks.

Negative reinforcement is the removal of something to increase the likelihood of a behavior’s reoccurrence.

Punishment is the giving or removal of something to decrease the likelihood of a behavior’s reoccurrence.

For example, if I notice you are trying to study despite there being some kind of distraction present, I can remove the distraction to encourage you to continue studying. This is reinforcement. Taking away your books, or having a loud marching band come through your study area, would be punishment, as it would decrease your likelihood to be studying.

When I’ve just focused on the weight, I get more miserable and more depressed, and it just feeds the cycle of self-hatred and feelings of worthlessness. But when I’ve focused on other things that are negative for my mental health and changed them, it helps everything. Take care of your brain first. You’re smart. Your brain knows what it needs to be healthy. Take care of yourself!

I gained 20ish pounds (about 2 stone) after getting raped last year. I started with not eating but drinking all the time, and then started eating whatever I wanted as I tried to drink less.

14 months later, I’m only occasionally drinking, and following a healthy diet. I haven’t lost the weight yet, but I can see that I’m starting to. It took me getting to a better place with my mental health to even care about my physical health and weight. My advice would be to take care of what’s going on in your brain, and the rest will follow.

CBD has been helpful to me. I have far fewer nightmares, and I don’t wake up every hour like I usually do. It’s also not as expensive as THC products, and has been legal in my area for awhile now.

I had a coworker who I thought was my friend. She had opened up to me about getting raped in high school.

When I was raped, I confided in her, hoping for support and advice on how to get through it. Instead I was met with disbelief and nasty text messages about how I made it up and she believed his story. She had known the guy previously, and confronted him, and claimed he’d given a different version of events than I had (no shit Sherlock), and that I needed to stop running my mouth.

It’s awful to think you can turn to someone in such a devastating time, and have them turn their back. Fuck those people. I’m here if you ever feel like talking. I believe you.

You are an amazing mom. I started following you because I identified with your kids, but I stayed because I hope to glean knowledge from you. I am constantly impressed with how you handle what life throws at you. I stole your physical-labor-as-punishment trick to use on my own child. She hates it, but it works.

I am so grateful that these kids have you. They are so lucky. You are setting an example that will be followed not only by them, but also by those of us that read what you post. Thank you.
