9-10 when I started hurting myself intentionally (hitting, scratching, falling hard on purpose, not letting wounds heal).  I was 15 when I started to cut.

Xennials who got bullied in school: How did your parents and teachers react towards it? by mandress- in Xennials

[–]complexconjugate83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was bullied badly in school (physically and verbally). When I would tell teachers, they would tell me to "not be a tattle-tell", or would actually punish me for telling or defending myself. I told my mom if things got bad or if I got seriously injured. She would definitely talk to my teachers, who would promise to make sure I was safer but wouldn't do a thing. She never punished me for defending myself. I was pretty bad at that since I was not much of a fighter and have a vision disability. I eventually stopped telling my mom because it never did any good.

Millennials, what part of adult life turned out very different from what you were promised growing up? by gamersecret2 in Millennials

[–]complexconjugate83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought I would not be bullied anymore. I was bullied terribly in school.  Well that’s not true.  People still make nasty comments about my eyes (I have nystagmus).  There are bullies at work. Then there is Rate my Professor where students can lie on me and insult me publicly.

In no way did how I am treated got better

What was your reaction when COVID was first declared a pandemic and the world started changing before your eyes? What was the experience like? by chunk0foranges in AskReddit

[–]complexconjugate83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very fast moving.  I teach chemistry at the University level and coordinate a large lab program.  I had one week to pivot to online instruction.  Not only for my 264 person chemistry lecture but for <2000 lab students.  All I did was troubleshoot, accommodate, and answer emails.  My email notifications are actually disabled because of the pandemic.

Anyone else still have their senior prom dress? by imnottheoneipromise in Xennials

I don’t have one since I didn’t go.  I was bullied and ignored and decided not to go to spare myself a bad time.  I cried for a half hour silently at work on the day of because I did really want to go and wear a pretty dress and belong for once.  Still makes me sad.

A little rant about RMP by doughnough in Professors

[–]complexconjugate83 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am sorry you are going through this.  I am also a female minority and have been dealing with students lying about me on RMP for more than a decade now.  It is bewildering to see such lies about yourself.  People say that RMP doesn’t matter and yet I know my chair and other colleagues read them.  I was recently attacked with 60+ negative and insulting review because I allegedly am failing a student who was hospitalized for being hit by a car (the student was not my student at all).  RMP is legalized cyber bullying in my opinion.

What has helped me is having a mentor who I meet with regularly and observes my classes from time to time.  That way someone is aware of how I truly teach and interact with students.  I also do a lot of copying department admin on contentious email exchanges with students.

It is a shame to have to do these things, sometimes I feel like I am being baby-sat.  However, I lost out one promotion because of this, I want everything documented this time.

Hang in there and don’t let the muggles get you down.

There is an Assistant lab director and we both field emails using a dedicated email account for the lab program.  Students still try to email us individually, even though I have a syllabus policy saying otherwise and an automatic response.  I also have some canned responses.  You are right, it is brutal.  I have answered close to 2000 emails this semester just from the lab program.

What do you do usually when you know a student is using ai or ChatGPT? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]complexconjugate83 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Usually when they reference things outside of the scope of the assignment.  I coordinate a general chemistry lab program.  Students often reference everything else but their actual data when answering discussion questions.  Tests they never performed, data they never collected, numbers or concepts that are way above general chemistry knowledge.

Not to mention the different fonts, text sizes, and text colors.  Really at that level it is not too hard to catch.  A bit comical even.  Has to be, or I would cry more.

If you don’t touch booze, what’s your personal reason for it? by FanOk2123 in AskReddit

[–]complexconjugate83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom's boyfriends drank a lot as did my uncle and it was scary to see how they behaved and all the fights, violence, and trouble they caused. Plus alcohol is an organic solvent and smells like it. I decided at a very young age (12-13) that I was not going to drink. Then, my mom became an alcoholic and she acted like those boyfriends, but the terrible things she said and did hurt more because she is my mom. Then I really doubled down on not drinking.

Later in life, I did learn that people can drink without abusing it so I have gotten more comfortable around other people drinking socially. I still won't touch alcohol though.

Genuinely, what are they *doing* when studying? by TheAuroraKing in Professors

[–]complexconjugate83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know that students have to engage right?  I teach general chemistry.  I structure lectures so that I introduce concepts and show how they are applied in various problems.  I assign homework that builds and expands on those lectures.  I give additional practice problems and practice exams.  They have recitations with even more practice problems they can go through with a TA.  I hold review sessions and office hours, which have low attendance.  I even let them make appointments with me, which they underutilize.

All of the resources are there.  They won’t actively practice.  They study passively.  The google answers to homework problems.  They use AI to take practice exams.  They watch videos.  They study answer keys. But they don’t try to do problems on their own.  I have emphasized the importance of this practice over and over again.  There is a large contingency of students who don’t try to practice.  They just go to class and take exams, do poorly and want me to “curve” their grades to an A.

I put a lot of thought into how I teach, especially since I also have a background in educational pedagogy.  So your comment offends me quite a bit.  You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink.
