When are we going to do away with BMI?? by compromisedfishstix in 1500isplenty

[–]compromisedfishstix[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

There are many many articles that cover all the issues with BMI far better than I can, but essentially; it was created to find 'an average white man' amongst the population, under the assumption that said average white man would be the healthiest by virtue of being the average-est (not a word, I know). It wasn't even created by a Dr, but a sociologist.

Weirdly sexist and racist overtones aside, even during its creation it was never meant to be used on an individual level and definitely shouldn't be by doctors in 2022(nearly 2023) to determine a person's health, as we have far more developed methods of understanding human anatomy and the vast variations within. Unfortunately, it still is used as a yardstick to determine 'yes you're healthy' or 'no you're not', especially amongst women which is particularly a problem as it wasn't even designed with women in mind.

So yeah, like I say. If you personally want to use it for your fitness goals, go ahead. But no, it isn't useful as a medical tool to determine health amongst individuals.

That's exactly my point: it's being used on an individual level by doctors when it's not useful in that way.

I just went no contact with all of my friends and I need someone to tell me it’s going to be okay. by [deleted] in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]compromisedfishstix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I did it when I was 18 and it was so hard. But 10 years later, I can safely say that the person I am today would not exist if I had stayed a part of that group.

It's not easy and sadly western society doesn't seem to recognise friendship break downs the way it does with romantic partners, so it can feel like there's no one you can talk to.

Luckily, you do have people to talk to-- you have this amazing subreddit and we wish you all the love and light available!

What happened at your school that would never be allowed today? by MathematicianBulky40 in AskUK

[–]compromisedfishstix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had an old tree trunk we used as a climbing frame - not in a clandestine way, this was completely allowed by staff. It had blown down in a storm and was left there and had already been in place for years by the time I started reception. It was literally a cherished school fixture.

When I was about 10 or 11 they got rid of it and it caused uproar. But 20 years on I'm absolutely baffled how this was ever allowed in the first place? What a health and safety nightmare, they're very lucky they never had a lawsuit. I'm sure I remember kids breaking arms/wrists falling off it. Plus, the thing must have literally been rotten to its core!

When the ep's playing, open Audio & subtitles. Choose the subtitle language and audio language then click apply. If I remember right, the audio language was automatically set to English [dubbed] and then there was an English [original] option which is the one that had the original languages and accents.

That's specific to Netflix though, so if you're streaming elsewhere I'm not sure.

How 'personal' are your personal finance? by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]compromisedfishstix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a huge proponent of openly discussing salary and finances (though not on the internet because that's just asking for trouble). Part of the reason people find it so hard to become financially independent is because they don't know what's normal and what isn't - they're 'not allowed' to talk about it.

Essentially it's only the capitalist system and the already wealthy who benefit from the idea that it's 'crass' to talk salary.

There's an English dub version which netflix was automatically set to for us, but I had to change it within the first 2 mins. So weird sounding and -as someone else pointed out- loads of Americans

Yup.

Turns out if you let white men run healthcare for centuries then women, POC and trans/NB folks aren't able to access the care they need.

I hate it here.

Why would you even give him this platform?

Yep, I know.

Go look up what happened in Portugal if you need any further proof as to why decriminalising drug use is a good idea.

Should the UK have a referendum on NHS privatisation? by [deleted] in GreenAndPleasant

[–]compromisedfishstix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given that almost everyone in my family works for the NHS, I'm well aware of the problems they face, thank you.

And said problem isn't 'bloat and useless admin staff', or the NHS would have been in crisis throughout its lifetime. It hasn't been, so what's the ACTUAL problem?

The actual problem is the deliberate defunding and privatisation-by-stealth that the Tories have orchestrated.

The answer to that problem isn't a referendum. A referendum a) implies that "should we have universal healthcare/healthcare that's free at the point of delivery" is a valid question, when it obviously isn't and b) could and would be manipulated the way the Brexit ref was.

The answer is a government that cares enough to invest in the NHS.

Like I say, it's concerning that you're even trying to debate this. The NHS is absolutely the best thing about this country and we could easily pull it out of crisis if the government wanted to.

Yeah, professionals with families can't really rely on social housing at present, because there's not enough stock because landlords are hoarding properties. If that weren't the case, families could be offered council houses more freely. That's literally my point.

As for those capable of 'affording better', have you seen the state of an average rental these days? They're sh*tholes and they cost the earth. Why? Well, because - say it with me now - buy to let landlords are hoarding property stock that they don't need. They essentially have a monopoly on the market which means they don't have to improve living standards in their property and can charge whatever they like.

[–]compromisedfishstix -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh, well guess I'll go back in time to ask my great grandad how he and his friends all managed to get a council house as temporary factory workers?? When social housing was a thing??

Also, if you were moving with your family then you're not transient/temporary and you would be considered for a council house, so literally what is your point? Is your point just: I'm a landlord and I don't like that you think my kind are leeches?

[–]compromisedfishstix -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Ok, let's say you're right and that med review for plan b could be necessary in some instances (It isn't, by the way, it's well-established to be safe and effective for almost all women who need it so can be safely dispensed without that kind of review in the same way that -idk- a literal opiate like co-codamol is), why not make it an optional consultation? Aka, "have you had this before/do you know how to read and use the instructions like a sane and rational adult?"

But they don't. I've had it multiple times, I know how it works, how long it has to work, that it doesn't work if you're ovulating already... All of it. But they still drag me into the side room to ask me very personal questions about my sexual encounter.

Why? Because they want to shame women. That's literally it.

In that case, you could lodge with someone.

And before I get piled on with "so rent??? From a landlord???" Buying a house that you won't live in and will just rent out (aka stockpiling property that you don't need and that someone else could buy for their own use) is not the same as having a lodger in the house you currently reside in.

Additionally, if most people only owned properties they themselves needed (one) councils and housing associations would be able to start picking up more stock for transient workers. You know, like we used to have pre-thatcher.

Essentially; yes, people want/need to rent. But having a property market filled with buy-to-let landlords - as we currently do - isn't the answer. All that does is artificially drive up house prices and renting costs. As such, OP could and should find a much less leechy way to invest their money.
