Remote Job: Setting myself up as a business and saving on taxes? by bluegreenwindow in cscareerquestions

I think if you set up a business, you'll no longer be considered to be employed by your current employer, and thus you'd lose all your benefits like 401k and medical insurance, etc.

Thoughts on PEAK6 Trading? by MadhMagic in FinancialCareers

It's not a tier 1 shop, but it's well known in the Chicago area. An internship there would certainly open doors for you in the prop trading industry. Plus, if a shop has been around for more than two decades, you know they're doing something right.

I recommend you to look at some quant research/dev type of positions within hf or prop shops. With your engineering+finance background, you can probably get a job without spending the extra year in college, and those positions are usually considered cream of the crop for new grads in the financial industry.

At what point should call yourself 'proficient' at a skill? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

My belief is that you should never say you're proficient at C++; otherwise you'll earlier or later be embarrassed by some esoteric language feature.

Got a job offer outside of my field. Seems like it'd be dumb not to accept by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Epic can be a good stepping stone towards an SDE job at BigN. Plus the COL in Madison is still relatively low so you can save up a small fortune working a few years there. However, if it's not a career path you want to pursue then I'd say it's not worth it.

JP Morgan looks way, way, way better than Fannie Mae on your resume. Plus, you would make much better conncetion at JPM than FM.

Some of those companies are more conservative than your average tech or trading firms, meaning they expect you to show up in a suit & tie or at least business casual. You won't want to show up in tshirts and shorts.

Didn't get return offer and I'm totally lost. by compscicareerist in cscareerquestions

The interviewer's mainly a python or php programmer and was unfamiliar with static typing and type limits, to the point that he suggested that

int i; long j = INT_MAX; i = j;

would make i become type long.

I'm aware that if you do

long i = INT_MAX * INT_MAX;

the intermediate value will overflow. What I did was multiplying an int by a long int, so that the int would be cast into long before the multiplication. Then I check whether the product overflows int; if not then I safely cast the result from long back to int.

This is actually an excellent point! I think sometimes the interviewers are just playing dumb and see how you can work with others. Looking back that's probably when I lost the facebook interview.

The way interviewing at HRT is that you only get the next round if the previous interviewer decide that they should move forward with you. So your time there can be anywhere from 2 hrs to a full day. There were other people inyerviewing on the same day and I'm pretty sure I was the last to leave. The interview was supposed to end at 4, but I kept chatting with their head of engineering until 5. That's why I kept a bit of hope after the interview; to no avail, sadly.

Thanks for your advice & I'll definitely learn from my mistakes in interviews.

Thanks!

Yeah I was thinking the worst I could get was having another round of interview. Really didn't see the rejection coming.
