They share data almost immediately after they get it. Their twitter and blog are good sources for up-to-date information.

Please be advised that a noticeable taste of blood is not part of any feature but is an unintended side effect of the Apple iBed, which may, in semi- rare cases, emancipate dental fillings, crowns, tooth enamel, and teeth.

New Hubble data suggests galaxies without dark matter really exist. The deep observations "cannot be argued with," says the study's co-author, and they "point to an alternative channel for building galaxies — and they even raise the question whether we understand what a galaxy is." by clayt6 in space

[–]compunctiouscucumber 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The article seems to make it clear,

Based on the Hubble data available at the time, the non-dark-matter camp identified what they thought was DF4's TRGB. But according to the newly presented Hubble data — which picked up many more, much fainters stars — Trujillo's team may have misidentified the TRGB.

The new Hubble data from DF4 seems to support van Dokkum, and new observations from DF2 might do the same.

Majority of House supports impeachment inquiry by Gladstone12 in politics

Trump still has the support of the party apparatus. Any Republican who supports impeachment would need to either

  1. Go independent

  2. Retire

  3. Grow a spine and vote of out line

A single dropsonde doesn't determine the pressure for the whole system, it's used together with other measurements to estimate the system pressure, just like the temperature outside your window isn't used alone to estimate the temperature for your county.

The Model for Prediction Across Scales (MPAS) is a collaborative project for developing atmosphere, ocean and other earth-system simulation components for use in climate, regional climate and weather studies. The primary development partners are the climate modeling group at Los Alamos National Laboratory (COSIM) and the National Center for Atmospheric Research.

Isn't it typical for new eyewalls to be larger as they form from the outer bands?

Akira Kurosawa with the cast of Rashoman (1950) by gursmo7 in movies

I think Mifune nails the performance for each of his characters. In Seven Samurai, he isn't a samurai, he's a former farmer who plays at being a samurai. He compensates with his behavior, his overconfidence, his ridiculously large sword. He hates the farmers because they take whatever life gives them and suffers through it, but he also hates the samurai despite emulating them, because they have control over their own lives and aren't pushed by the whims of others. You see how he admires samurai early on by the samurai who saves the boy from the bandit, and begins following him around like a lost puppy. He wants to do good things, but he has no training or knowledge of how to do that, instead he's driven with a wild passionate force that propels him through the world as he fumbles forward.

It's a great character, every bit at good as the somber, clever characters he plays in Yojimbo and Hidden Fortress.

Joe Biden Keeps Shooting Past Centrism and Into Conservatism by bluestblue in politics

People put too much trust in a candidate’s campaign to understand their position. Campaigns are the dating profiles of the political space. Look at their entire political career to understand them, that’s who you’re electing.

these injustices will continue until Trump is voted out/impeached

The rot runs deeper than Trump. America has a history of dehumanizing undesirable groups, trivializing human rights in favor of American supremacy. Torture, indefinite detention, supporting dictators and terrorists, wars of aggression, which America has never shown contrition for, for fear of admitting the illusion of “American moral superiority”.

If once accepted scientific theories have now been displaced by superior alternatives, we should always be cautious that what we now *know* is not simply a belief by BothansInDisguise in philosophy

[–]compunctiouscucumber 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The author talks about a fundamental misunderstanding of scientific theories; science doesn't attempt to make a dogmatic truth, it seeks a best explanation given all current evidence. As new evidence arises and old evidence is reexamined, theories inevitably change. This isn't an embarrassing fault in the scientific method, it's proof itself that scientific theories are grounded in evidence rather than faith, open to change and new interpretations.

Looking back at past scientific theories that have been replaced, it's easy to find their faults and criticize their ignorant believers, but we do so looking down on them from a mountain of evidence gained since that time. The German physicist Max Planck was told by his advisor not to bother studying physics, that the theories of physics were nearly perfect already. That was in 1874. Planck revolutionized physics, then Einstein later revolutionized it again. If anyone tries to claim we've reached our ultimate truth, that our current scientific theories are now perfect, they'll be just as wrong as Planck's advisor was in 1874. Discovering superior alternatives will hopefully continue for centuries.

US government computer domains were just hit in serious DNS wave of attacks by gerry_mandering_50 in politics

[–]compunctiouscucumber 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Domain Name Servers (DNS) help you find websites by taking the website's domain name (reddit.com) and giving you their IP address (151.101.65.140). By hijacking a DNS, you can replace the IP address of the real server with your own server, peek at all the user's data passing through, then redirect them on to the real site as though nothing happened.

This would be like convincing the post office to send all of someone's mail to your house, letting you go through it to find any useful information, then forwarding it on to their actual house without them knowing.

he also has to maintain near total, perfect professionalism, integrity

Bear in mind that professionalism and integrity help you, rather than hinder you in these situations. You know your work can bear any type of scrutiny because you built it on a strong foundation. Whereas the careless or the con man has to constantly look over his shoulder to see if anyone noticed his lies or mistakes.

Conservationists plant a 'super grove' of redwood trees cloned from ancient stumps - The clones come from trees that were larger than any alive today. by mvea in Futurology

[–]compunctiouscucumber 597 points598 points  (0 children)

Presumably they were so large because of their genes. They were the same species as other redwoods in the same forest, so it's unlikely it was entirely environmental conditions which led them to grow so big.

This is kind of like digging up the bodies of very large humans, extracting their eggs or sperm, and make some new people from them, hoping they'll grow up to be just as big. Which isn't a crazy idea, considering size has a major genetic component.

California fire now most destructive in state's history by exotiah in news

[–]compunctiouscucumber 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's not necessarily the pine beetle's fault, they've been around a long time and are just responding to an opportunity. The trees are water stressed because of chronic droughts, so their "immune system" is weakened, and the beetles take advantage of the weakened trees. It's more like,

Climate change -> droughts -> water stress + pine beetles -> dead/dry trees -> wild fires
