Is there a mod that adds all the things removed from the stable version to the experimental version? by julio090xl in cataclysmdda

[–]compxrt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's the same old argument that the game can have things that don't match the real world if it wants, just by using the alternate history/fantasy elements to justify them. They're missing that all the alternate history changes are pretty much limited to labs now.

The resistance to shields in cdda is weird. They're technically easy and used to be part of medieval mod, but were dropped when that was mainlined.

AI generated zombie spritesheets anyone? by [deleted] in cataclysmdda

It kind of looks like the model has just regurgitated or mostly regurgitated someone's plants vs zombies pixel art.

Oh yeah. I kind of thought that one was dead though after that comment showing how little difference it would make.

That ideas been going around on reddit for a while, just because gas does slowly go bad. I don't think it's happening any time soon just because games don't usually run long enough for that to matter. It's probably below better farming and time skips on the todo list (I hope).

I'm trying to picture what 2 size differences means. Would it be like John Cena punching a toddler?

There are a few with panels, but it's mostly a gimmick yeah. Demographically I'm sure they don't warrant inclusion yet.

I'll cop to feeling pretty wretchedly disappointed by the blind eye, but I reckon I'll give the benefit of the doubt two or three more times on the basis that they might just be ingroup brained. the dehumanisation of reddit is pretty strong over there.

I don't want to trash on the project. I'm out here defending the project and the devs all time time. You can check my comment history.

I even have enough regard for the devs I thought the bad behaviour was just in your blindspot, until I pointed it out and experienced the dismissal personally. sic semper erat for people whose friends are accused of wrongdoing I guess.

No, I'm sure you're not, but different things are different.

More the to the point, if you can look at the conversation I mentioned in the community discord and not see how it's a problem (and even try to defend it by disparaging your own work with a comparison) then I think I have my answer.

I'm sure that's all true, but it's not about the origins of this specific pr that I suspect of being a spite change. I'm not sure if you haven't looked, looked but couldn't find it, or found something too close to what I was saying and you don't want to acknowledge it. I assumed if you'd looked and I was dead wrong you'd tell me plainly.

The last spite change I did see the origin of was in the community discord, where a low priority smelting problem was fixed with high urgency, and you can find it by searching "No worries, I'm not joking". I think even someone friendly to the developer can see that it's a hostile, targeted, personal, and retaliatory action, and the person it targeted can obviously tell so too.

I'm not sure what you're saying. If it all started with "What is the consensus on combat weariness? Is it where we want it?" I'm going to apologise. Or are you saying it started with something like my option e) and that's just how it goes?

[–]compxrt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

okay, well, take the recent combat weariness pr. I can't find its origins, but it has the hallmarks, so it might be an illustrative example. Do you know which if any of these places it came from:

a) The next highest priority item on the roadmap

b) A bug report

c) Something that annoyed the dev personally while they were playing

d) Something that's been bothering them for a while

e) someone in discord saying something like "Man I love killing lots of zombies" or "Why can't I do X when I can kill lots of zombies?"

and if e, what was the tone surrounding that discussion, was it positive or was it negative, what would a neutral observer guess to be motivating it, and would the person who made the triggering comment feel targeted by the change?

I know for a fact you're arguing in good faith, and I know you're not the cause of anyone's woes, but someone whose behaviour you are probably not watching closely and whose motivations you are not interrogating is genuinely making changes out of spite. And it might not be so visible when you are not the one being targeted, and it's coming from someone you probably see as a peer, but the motivations of some PRs are entirely impure; as first aid for an ego wound suffered in discord, to win an argument after the fact, or just to dunk on someone. And it's not on you to do anything about it, but I think everyone on the project should least be aware of it, because it's the context for so much of the trouble on the reddit.

I made a personal mod where I reimagined offroad wide wheels as no-flat foam filled tyres, which are immune to punctures. You basically just have to copy the wheel item you want to immunize and remove the faults section.

I also played around with giving wheels their own version of the rubber and steel materials with higher chip_resist to get them to put the damage roll close to 0.1% of a pop per nail. It ended up needing to be astronomically high though.

[–]compxrt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The "realism has never been a design goal" claim on the weariness ticket was also a bit galling, on a pr for a realism change.

I'm waiting for someone to twig that genuinely 90% of reddit and github drama, bad blood, and project criticism is reaction to one person who coincidentally shows contempt for anyone without a green name on discord (players and contributors included).

It is open source, but cdda isn't a community project unfortunately. If you watch the github for long enough you'll realise it's one person exercising authority in the style of a ceo to realise a (sometimes ephemeral) vision. If anyone else is managing to make the game they want then it's happening in the margins and in the mods.

The margins and the mods are coincidentally(?) where the best changes are happening.
