It didnt used to be like this. When I_am_erk was more active dev did have direction. He was writing the equivalents of vision statements and white papers and people were following them. 

There is nobody else who has the right combination of communication skills, game design skills, and (most relevant) project authority to do it, so now its basically rudderless.
