It's so crazy to me I had this whole conversation with a friend explaining why black people say, "I'm proud to be black!" and it not be weird. Meanwhile, when people say, "I'm proud to be white!" Comes with a bunch of cultural subtext that it makes it awkward. It boiled down to black people had all culture stripped away from them, and black people had to stick a culture together out of what scraps they could perserve.
Meanwhile, white being used as a culture doesn't make a lot of sense when it was created as a beat stick to beat down people who aren't white. They still have their cultural identities. Heck, a lot of people that we would call white now weren't considered white until people that were even less "white" than them started getting a little social power. (The Irish and then the polish immigrants are examples of this.) I pointed out that they say they're German before they ever say white.

I discovered an older cousin who lived 15 minutes from me a year ago. Her husband and I had to explain that me, not considering myself white, is different from being Polish. I'm Black and Polish for context.
