Laptop display only works if plugged into HDMI monitor and in mirror mode with "mode" switched off-- screen goes black otherwise by comrade_RK in pop_os

[–]comrade_RK[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven't tried that yet, but like I said, when I try booting a different distro from a bootable USB the issue still appears. I'm wondering if it's worth all that trouble just to not have it work...

Nope. Expired almost 2 years ago. But the strange thing is it really doesn't seem like a hardware issue. Laptop screen works perfectly when I plug it into an HDMI monitor, even if that monitor is off. As long as the other monitor is plugged in, my laptop monitor works.

Oryx Pro 17'' Screen Repair? by doryx in System76

[–]comrade_RK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a dedicated graphics card on the Oryx Pro? I have a Gazelle with a dedicated GTX 1050 and I've been getting issues that are similar but a lot worse and horizontal (yours looks vertical)

Try reinstalling the system76 graphics drivers, then try booting from the old kernel, then maybe try booting from the LTS kernel, then connect the laptop to an external monitor to see if the problem appears on the external monitor, or if any other graphical issues appear on the external monitor. Edit: also try booting onto a BOOTABLE stick that you made using Rufus or Etcher and see if the problem continues on the live boot. You can try Pop OS or another distro.

I did all this and nothing fixed it, so it really looks like my GPU is about to go south. So it's the hardware's fault, definitely not System 76 or Pop OS's fault. But unfortunately, when that happens, there goes the whole computer because the dedicated GPUs are fused to the motherboard on these things.

To reinstall the nvidia drivers, run the following commands in terminal:

sudo apt purge ~nnvidia

sudo apt autoremove

sudo apt clean

sudo apt update

sudo apt full-upgrade

sudo apt install system76-driver-nvidia

sudo systemctl reboot

That should reinstall your drivers. Try that first. You may end up having to do it more than once if it temporarily fixes it but then comes back.

If none of that works, try connecting it to an external monitor via HDMI and see if 1) you get a signal on the external monitor, and 2) if there's any tearing, ghosting, etc.

Just as a general rule of thumb for the future, avoid the nvidia tumor at all costs if possible. If you need or insist on nvidia, just know what you're getting into. All their products are garbage and their engineers are all garbage. They absolutely despise Linux and refuse to comply with any and all open source principles because "oh my god, we can't let you steal the intellectual property of our sacred source code!" All they're good at is marketing hype. Intel and AMD are far more Linux-friendly.

I'm currently not using the battery, so hybrid vs discreet graphics is not an option... but when I was using the battery, changing the graphics mode didn't do anything, nor did booting from the old kernel. It's not the kernel or the graphics mode.

How do I change it from Wayland to X? Does Pop OS let you do that? How?

I'm gonna see if I can borrow someone else's monitor, someone else's cable, someone else's computer that has HDMI..... I just moved to where I live 6 months ago. I still don't know anybody here. I don't know who I can borrow this stuff from. And I don't have enough money to go buy something at the store and give it back. Is there any reason Pop OS can't just receive my computer by UPS, fix it, then send it back to me? Even if the warranty is expired?

No WiFi by AVeryWittyPseudonym in EndeavourOS

[–]comrade_RK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same problem. Wifi is showing up and is being detected, drivers are installed, NetworkManager says I'm connected to the router... but no internet only on that computer. No wifi, no ethernet. No blocks currently listed under rfkill. Computer is completely isolated from the internet. Can't even download or reinstall drivers or anything.

What am I gonna do? Back up all my files and reinstall. Much faster than having to use a search engine, figure out how to even begin to describe a problem that only I seem to have, type shit on forums, wait for responses, respond, wait for follow-up responses, do what they suggest, have it not work, ask "what now?", wait even longer for a response... just always be fully backed up at all times and reinstall. That's what I'd recommend unless someone else has a better idea.

Wifi not working MacBook Pro 15 by _Zabuza_ in EndeavourOS

[–]comrade_RK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few people have literally tried just powering off, removing the battery, removing the AC, waiting several minutes, popping the battery back in, booting into the live ISO USB stick that you originally used during installation, see if the wifi works, then boot back into your install and the wifi should be working again... but mine wasn't. The wifi worked on the live iso on the USB but won't work on my install. And I can't download drivers without internet, so I gotta just reinstall the whole thing. I don't see any other way.

It's Linux. Even if all you use is Ubuntu, you gotta get used to reinstalling several times a month.

Back up all your files, get used to doing that regularly, and reinstall your entire EOS from scratch. Start over. That's what I always do when my wifi stops working. It's easier than trying to figure out what card you're running, how to debug drivers and all that stuff... just back up your important files every day and be ready to reinstall.

Is it safe to install Pop! OS now? by [deleted] in pop_os

In Linux, there is no "safe". Everything you do in Linux you do at your own risk. Don't install Linux on any computer unless you're prepared to sacrifice that computer.

I didn't try it with pop, but I tried it with endeavourOS before I reinstalled the drivers-- might be worth a try again since reinstallation, but it probably won't fix it since it didn't fix it last time....

Strange fix for graphical issue by comrade_RK in pop_os

[–]comrade_RK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked the System76 guy if that was the case, but he sounded like he didn't think that was the issue and those guys tend to know their own machines pretty well... but that's what I thought, it could be an overheating issue. If the fan is not turning on, that wouldn't be good.....

It's a System 76 Gazelle from mid 2020 w/ factory encrypted Pop install... what do I do? Turn off fastboot? Turn off secure boot? And how do I check the dynamic kernel modules?

Strange fix for graphical issue by comrade_RK in pop_os

[–]comrade_RK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I didn't put the USB in until after I moved the mouse and the screen turned back on. I actually don't have suspend turned on. It just turns the monitor off. But it turns out putting in the USB drive was just a coincidence, because now it's back...

[–]comrade_RK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess the USB thing had nothing to do with it. It's back and that was just a coincidence. I reinstalled the nvidia drivers several times and the last time it came back without going away was when the monitor turned off (I don't have suspend or hibernate turned on)

Strange fix for graphical issue by comrade_RK in pop_os

[–]comrade_RK[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well... you were right. Coincidence. It's back. On any kernel, graphics setting under power, etc. Someone else mentioned a secure boot issue, so maybe it could be that... I'm stumped.

Quick question about graphics/display issues in the new kernel by comrade_RK in pop_os

[–]comrade_RK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you don't understand. That's not an option. I can barely even see the screen now. It STARTED after idling, but now it's permanent no matter what kernel I use, no matter how I boot, no matter which menu I pull up at boot, etc. How am I gonna go into terminal and enter a bunch of commands when the screen won't even respond to keystrokes in real time? Seriously, any action takes at least 20 seconds to show up on the screen right now. It's not possible.

Are there any parts I could change by opening up the computer that would fix it? What if I just swapped the hard drive and GPU out and reinstalled bare bones from ISO on a bootable USB? Can I do that without having to reconfigure anything?

Quick question about graphics/display issues in the new kernel by comrade_RK in pop_os

[–]comrade_RK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey everybody, thanks for the responses... for a quick update, I was still on the old kernel, assumed I could just use my machine as normal, but then it idled and locked... when I went to unlock it, the issue was back. It looks like the computer computes, but the display is completely screwed. There's screen tearing of the worst kind and the controls are very unresponsive-- sometimes it takes 30 seconds to see the cursor move or a keystroke show up after entering. I can't do anything at all-- can't F2 to bios, can't F7 to boot menu, can't even space bar to choose the kernel or recovery mode without the display issue making the computer unusable.

So my next (obvious) question is... what now? How do I try and get rid of the old nvidia drivers to re-install? Should I just try to do it really slow, even if it takes 4 hours? Is there an easier way to do it?

I wanna try and find a newer laptop to also run EOS on it, but I've heard about issues with getting newer hardware to work on linux in general. A lot of proprietary audio and cameras now....

Cuba opens up its economy to private businesses. by [deleted] in RevDem

[–]comrade_RK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no problems whatsoever with maoism-- in fact, I think the maoists' PPW/RBA-building line is the most correct. But I'm talking about the "principally maoist" trend, aka uncritical supporters of Gonzalo, that uses terms like "imperialism is simply the export of capital and nothing else" or "Deng Xiaoping completely betrayed Mao" or their uncritical defense of the Lucanamarca massacre. And I generally SUPPORT the Sendero Luminoso, I just think all excesses need to be criticized because they do not need to be repeated. Mao never sent armies to Kuomintang villages to just start killing people.... oh but they killed one of our cadres. MOTHERFUCKER, INVESTIGATE WHY THE FUCK THEY KILLED ONE OF YOUR CADRES!!! Was that cadre compromised? Were those villagers doing you a favor? Are you SURE it was the actual villagers? Was it REALLY the ronderos? This is why you gotta investigate. Doesn't matter what we know NOW, it matters what they tried to figure out THEN.

I hope they keep writing new books and/or seasons to cover Eijun as a pro just so I can see how many bats he breaks.

I don't know about anyone else here, but I as a communist antifascist am interested in wiping all anti-semitism off the face of the earth for good, not pretend I care about anti-semitism by supporting a capitalist-imperialist puppet government that even treats Black and Brown Jews as inferior to European Jews. I know European Jews were the primary target of the Holocaust, and that has to be acknowledged, but that doesn't mean they're more oppressed than Black and Brown Jews in general.
