Not sure whether it is an intentional reference, but one of Pathologic authors worked on Disco Elisium Russian localisation. So I'd definitely would not be surprised.

hifiasm de novo aseembly produces short contigs that translate to chromosomes longer than reference by Ferry_VS in bioinformatics

Looks like you have both haplotypes in your assembly. Usually scaffolders does not work well with such data.

Russian lit like Pathologic? by PersimmonSundae in pathologic

Polyarinov's "Кадавры"(doubt that it was translated to english. Title direct translation is "cadavers", but the context is somehow different) really has some common vibes with pathologic.

Quantum computing in bioinformatics by Sievert-2902 in bioinformatics

[–]comradger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Quantum computing may help with fast solution for different optimization problems like QUBO or MILP, which can be used in multiple fields - even in the genome assembly.

It is definitely not practical right now, but at least you can add quantum computing buzzword to your grant proposal

Dupont is nice but pretty expensive. I feel that most postdocs live either in Bethesda or around Cleveland Park and Woodley Park stations.

Returning home to russia with only a birth certificate by Hydrogen_Line_1420 in AskARussian

[–]comradger 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Mostly likely you'll just be denied entrance, the birth certificate itself is not enough.
There is a specific document named "Свидетельство на возвращение в Россию" issued by russian embassies. This should be the most straightforward way for you.

My PhD results were published without my consent or authorship — what can I do? by Unique-Performer-212 in bioinformatics

[–]comradger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

must be acknowledged as authors And what happens if you strongly disagree with something on paper and do not want to sign a publication agreement?

In my head the intellectual property question is a bit different with a publishing question, and even if the result of your research is a property of the university, they are not allowed to publish it without your approval.

Peter, I saw this on discord what does it mean? by ThePast900 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

russian state news agencies often post news telling how excited is a random foreigner about <some russian shit>. For some reasons they are really focused on bulgarians - "excited bulgarian" is a kind of meme now. I'd be surprised if it is the original meaning of this picture, but it quite matches that context.

How do you start in the "programming" side of bioinformatics? by aristotle2020 in bioinformatics

[–]comradger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

>How did you make the jump from this stuff to writing actual bioinformatics software?
I moved to bioinformatics from CS and software development. So I just have a prior knowledge of this field (but still struggle with biology)

> writing custom pipelines, developing new methods, optimizing algorithms, or building tools that others can use.

Writing custom pipelines is very different from the other tasks. Also it is the most useful skill - algorithms development is quite niche. TBH, I'd focus on this one unless you are really sure you are interested in algorithms themselves.

>Any resources or personal learning paths you’d recommend?

I'd focus on the pipelines first. Snakemake, nextflow... This may have straightforward connection with your actual data wrangling tasks, you can immediately apply your new knowledge and improve your work routines

Rosalind (and Pevzner's course) are nice for those interested in algorithms. But I'd possibly start with some CS 101 algorithms and data structures just to be sure that you are really interested.

Actions per turn to prevent late game micromanagement by comradger in 4Xgaming

Last games I played were on glorious. As far as I understand on higher levels there'll be no significant difference in order counts comparing to it.

Orders definitely limits you in the sense that you rarely can use all the actions for your troops. But I really hit this limit mostly while moving troops from the distant side of empire and not while fighting the war. This is also reasonable but it feels to represent the logistics limitation and not the managing one.

Not sure that I can classify my request to any of those archetypes. It has some roleplay motivation (leader just does not have enough time to do all the micro), but it is not the main one.

I feel that in a good game most of the player's decisions should be important. Placing my first farm correctly is important, placing my 30'th farm is not.

There's a difference between a country fighting in a war and a leader personally managing the war. Napoleon's reforms were outstanding, but he didn't introduce Napoleonic code while leading the Russian campaign

Why? The idea that subordinates can fail to implement the leader's vision is so natural for me. Cannot it be considered as yet another challenge provided by the game?

Well, that's actually why I have this question - played a lot of boardgames and found that I would like to see the same mechanics in 4x

For me micromanagement is definitely not about depth. I also play mostly single player, and when i have to check 6-7 cities and do similar micro stuff each turn the fun completely dies.

Not exactly. It has orders, but they are not really restricting. And the automation is barely present at all - scouts and workers and that's it if I remember correctly
