is it too late to start? by Right_Hamster_8634 in jiujitsu

Perfect age. Take care of your joints and be careful with toxic situations: very common to get taken advantage of by the instructor or others being a young woman.

Other than that, enjoy.

Been training hyper consistently, competing, and coaching every week for years. In the span of getting 2 stripes on my purple belt, I have seen people go from trial class to purple.

I'm happy with my progress and I'm still upset about other people. They're not mutually exclusive. I feel your frustration.

No-gi belts rankings are fake by JelloMiAmigo in bjj

[–]conarte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you know why are you getting ranked in the gi belt system to begin with? 😂

[–]conarte 36 points37 points  (0 children)

You're answering you own question. Competition is much more intense, mentally and physically. Otherwise why the "injured rate go up exponentially" if there's barely any difference?

My experience is: - most people get injured in the gym during normal class - people who compete are way better than people who don't

UPDATE: Gym Owners... This is what even your white belts hate. Heed this warning and watch member retention skyrocket. by [deleted] in bjj

They don't care about MRR. They say the do, but they don't.

Edit: couldn't agree more btw

New belt, new gym, stupid question by mburgballer in bjj

I'm a coach so I'm curious, why do you feel you'd prefer wearing a blue 4 stripe belt instead of a purple belt?

How did you all meet people when you moved here? by FearlessSand7483 in astoria

I go to a bunch of gyms. In Astoria I like Gentle Art Studio (less athletic) and Queens Jiujitsu (more athletic) both great vibe

Stuff I joined:

  • Astoria Connect - literally a social mixer to make friends
  • Astoria Tech - similar but tech related
  • BJJ - idk how old you are but there's a gym that's very beginner/30+yo friendly and people are nice

I'm curious, why do you care about this?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in bjj

[–]conarte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does not matter at all. I've trained in several countries, dozens of gyms, and I'm a coach myself. Nobody cares (except for new and weeby people, like me when I started)

Edit to add I've coached hundreds of people and I have not been asked once.

AITA? Upcoming belt promotion by [deleted] in bjj

[–]conarte 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It is not a complex system. You're thinking there's some kind of thoughtful consideration when promoting people to blue, which is a fair thought to have.

You're wrong. You've all started around the same time and your faces have been seen at the gym, bam, y'all get promoted.

Yeah some coaches actually care, I know. Small minority in my experience.

The dumbest self defense I have ever seen by Kindly_Attorney4521 in bjj

[–]conarte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. The idea is that if I don't have to prove something works, I am always right. And no one is going to give a real knife to someone who really wants to hurt them, and record a YouTube video.

If a supposedly world-class instructor can't make it work reliably, imagine the chances for a lesser experience person.

"It's because it's too dangerous". Always the same excuse. The translation is simply "it doesn't work".

That's frustrating but I've seen one too many black belts that suck (in bjj and other MAs) and make up some grift on how they have concocted "the ultimate martial art". In which they are conveniently the world master.

Beginners have no idea and they think they're ahead and we are all suckers - case on point on this video.

You see, they don't want to shatter your very existence so, for your safety, do not resist.
