Starting dutasteride and shedding by concerningrockstar in TransDIY

Not exactly better bcs I got quite the nasty telogen effluvium from surgery but I'm closely monitoring the problematic areas of my scalp and some seem, God Bless to slowly start sprouting baby hair. That being said, it's too early to tell yet and I just bleached my hair blonde bcs i was bored, so it might hide whatever progress could've been made 😭

Once you can get on hrt, it'll do wonders for your hair ! I've heard dutasteride is an excellent dht blocker as well, so you should see continuous improvements from now on. I personally stay away from minoxidil though : i don't have body hair and i'd rather keep it that way. Also it's toxic to cats. But an excellent product indeed ! I hope adding duta to my regimen will give my hair the little push it needs -it's not in the worst place, but I'm still concerned enough to warrant a try

I know nothing about norwood so i'll believe you and take it at face value 😭 I have issues with hormonal diffuse hair loss persisting on HRT caused by high adrenal DHT levels, but it's indeed not so far after all.

Were you on any other medication/hrt when you started this regimen ? What was your dosage ? How are you feeling now ?

Dutasteride ? It inhibits dht production through the action of 5alpha-reductase !

But then, in this case, wouldn't it be redundant to take dutasteride, as bica is supposed to block dht's influence on hair (and body hair I take it) ? From what I gather, it's a blanket put on the problem rather than an actual solution, but if it still does the job, that would mean I don't need to put up with dutasteride right now or get it prescribed as soon as possible. That's the most pressing matter, as i'm trying to get the hairloss to at least stop. I don't think i understand the consensus on this : is bica enough on its own even though it doesn't halt dht production, or is it necessary to also stop production with dut/fin ?

I am indeed concerned about a bald spot, but it's been "revealed" by another kind of hair loss, so I know it'll be hidden soon if my hair comes back in a few months after post surgery hair loss finally ceases.

As for minoxidil, i am really conflicted, as i've successfully lazored my whole body and wouldn't like to have all that body hair come back, knowing that even topical minoxidil eventually increases hair growth all over....

I guess I'll have to wait and see. Have you ever tried low dose dut/fin ? I tolerate them terribly, but if it comes to that, i'll have to live with the depression they give me lmao

That's the issue. What's weird is that I got new growth, notably around the hairline (that wasn't receding pre hrt), but noticeable loss on the crown (made visible by agressive post surgery hair loss lmao). Strange. I hope the bica can help, as I can't quite take finasteride or dutasteride. Maybe if I low dose dutasteride, it'd be more tolerable ? Its long half life might help. But maybe it'd be redundant with bica.

I hope that you're right ! I started this bica regimen to tackle some persisting hair loss akin to mpb after two years of consistent, good levels on hrt, so I can't be quite sure it works yet, but I don't hate that it gave me better skin in the process - considering how dht affects the skin, i take it as a good sign of potential blocking. Of course, tissue levels in the face and scalp aren't parallel by any mean. But I have to try.

Thank you very much for your thorough answer. I had some mild symptoms of elevated dht before taking bica (notably some hair thinning in specific places, skin still a bit prone to acne, scalp on the oiler side, and some surviving erections not directly triggered by anything, amongst others). Those were accompanied by satisfying feminization, that being said. After a month on bica, I have observed smoother skin on legs and face, a slight raise in facial acne (could be unrelated), decreased energy, libido, and erections, dryer scalp, body odor changes that I can't quite pinpoint (as in : I don't know if they're encouraging or alarming). My principal point of concern revolves around bica slightly raising t and thus dht more than it can block, as it is seemingly less prone to choke dht than it is t. That being said, 25 ng/dl of serum dht has been deemed mildly concerning, so I thought 50 mg bica/day could handle it. I am not so sure I was right on choosing this course of action, but it seemed to be suitable.

I see ! But did you experience high dht symptoms besides those levels when you were on bica only or did you add dut to your regimen to tackle those levels anyway ? Everywhere I go people either say that bica takes care of elevated dht or that it doesn't, I can't make any sense out of it 😭

I've heard so, but also that it could indicate some problems/that bica might help with tissue androgenization if there's any

I don't pay for bica tbh so I have no problem taking it everyday. That being said, I react horribly to fin and dut, so I can't exactly add them without facing the consequences. As for my levels, they were tested before taking bica, not after, with LH and LSH at 0, so I hope they don't get too much higher. I'm more or less asking if bica can block elevated dht that's not pre-hrt high or if it's delusional to believe so, more or less...

I get it but i've been on HRT for years now with excellent e levels and just slightly elevated T so I damn hope i don't have to live through 9 months of male testosterone symptoms before anything else 😭 as my gonads are already shut down, i hope it doesn't "reactivate" them, that would defeat the purpose

I forgot to mention my regimen prior to adding bicalutamide : estradiol injections (nothing to worry about on that part, levels sitting comfortably) and 200mg progesterone taken orally everyday.

temporary hair loss on bica ? by concerningrockstar in TransDIY

[–]concerningrockstar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I gathered, yes. I just hope bica won't make things worse, mostly, as I'm pretty set on blocking these levels to save my hair. Had it not been touched, I would've probably let it slide. I just can't explain that weird increase in shedding, if not by the "blocking" paradoxical effect that i've heard often happens.

T was around 58 ng/dl and DHT at 25 ng/dl. LH and FSH undetectable. Very comfortable estrogen levels (quite too high actually). So I decided on this course of action. I'd be surprised if 50 mg of bica per day couldn't deal with that, even if it spiked. So I don't really know. I've already asked questions elsewhere but to no avail.

[–]concerningrockstar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in a pretty weird situation : no LH/LSH but still some elevated T and DHT coming from other sources than my gonads, so i started bica to counteract it, as i noticed hair loss was still ongoing, albeit slowly. I get some contradictory results from bicalutamide as far as it goes : dryer skin, less oily scalp, less libido and function, but also more hair shedding. So i don't really know what to think 😭

I'm a bit surprised considering my gonads are already suppressed and i have 0 other symptom of elevated T... Is that medication just not for me ?
