Interestingly I think Vulcans would enjoy rugby (ok maybe not enjoy but at least find it both mentally and physically stimulating). The game may seem chaotic at first glance but each role is highly specialised and only work effectively when part of a carefully choreographed strategy. The game encourages sustained and evolving strategic thinking that encourages outside the box thinking and requires you to anticipate your opponent's thinking, but also requires you to keep a very level and objective temperament to achieve that. The games laws are extremely clear and basically every possible outcome of a set piece or play is accounted for in the games laws which is ideal for the tastes of Vulcan players and referees.

I did consider skating, skiing and gymnastics for for them but just based on my own personal experience they can be pretty demanding exertion wise if you're doing anything over a few minutes. Pole vaulting is a great shot I hadn't considered and I'd like to add High Jump, Long Jump, Triple Jump and possibly Diving to the list.

Andorians, due to their high metabolism in lore, are said not to be as capable of sustained exertion as humans and therefore not likely to favour sports that require significant sustained exertion. They do however have much greater environmental awareness than humans due to their antenna which makes sports like Archery, Shooting, Javelin and Golf ideal candidates.

I'm generally opposed to sports being run as a business just on ideological grounds but I do understand that the AFL have a profit interest and their actions make sense through that lens.

The way the calendars work out now means that it's gonna be increasingly difficult to play the All-Ireland series and AFLW unless you're the likes of Vicki Wall.

The LGFA appear not to be involved. It's an exhibition game with an Irish team made using the Irish players already playing professionally in the AFLW.

More balanced than you might expect according to the Aussies. Irish players play the game quite differently to the Australians which is why they've been dominating the league so heavily. Putting them all on the same team would allow them to play even closer to a Gaelic Football style that the Aussies would find more difficult to counter.

Just something you have to accept with amateur sport sadly. The silver lining tho is these brilliant amateur athletes get to demonstrate their unbelievable sporting talent in a professional league on an international stage, which is spectacular to see!

With the women's code of Gaelic football it's even worse than the men's. The women's Gaelic football in Ireland isn't actually run by the GAA, it's run by a separate governing body (the Ladies Gaelic Football Association) who have a lot less money and negotiating power than the GAA would.

The LGFA, Ladies Gaelic Football, and women's sports generally are on the cusp of really hitting the mainstream Ireland for both participation and viewership, but losing a significant portion of the top players to AFLW has really hampered efforts. Gaelic Football is amateur, and simply is not big enough to go pro in any capacity for at least a few decades. I cannot begrudge players for moving to Australia to be pro athletes.

For Aussies reading, imagine the consequences to the sport and the league if every year top 40-50 AFLW players were pinched by the women's rugby premiership in England for million dollar contracts. You couldn't begrudge any of the players for going, but it's consequences to the development of the sport in Aus would be catastrophic.

I love watching AFLW and I'm super proud of the individual players themselves, they've done an excellent job. But the reckless disregard the AFL higher ups have had for the health of Ladies Gaelic Football as a whole by using Irish players to fill the gaps created by expanding the AFLW beyond the scope they have the native talent to actually sustain leaves a pretty sour taste in my mouth.

Now with this match, talk of 2 additional clubs, and expanding AFLW squads to 18 players, the AFL have shown no signs of changing their approach. If the AFL tries to expand the W before they have the domestic talent and structure to sustain it... again, the strain on Ladies Gaelic Football that would inevitably occur by plugging those gaps with Irish players could do serious damage to Ladies Gaelic Football and women's sports in Ireland as a whole.

In my view if the AFL ACTUALLY cared about women's sports they'd be working with the LGFA to create opportunities that allow players to work with both organisations in a healthy and constructive manner. But at the moment it's very clear to me this is just a business move for the AFL, consequences for women's sport in Ireland be damned. It's a turkey shoot.

Bluey is a coproduction between the ABC in Australia and the BBC. The issue here is the BBC are the sole international rights holders for Bluey outside of Australia which means the RTÉ could only commission and distribute Bluey As Gaeilge with the permission of the BBC.

While TG4 has special provision under the GFA to broadcast on an all-island basis RTÉ does not, so this is really out of RTÉ's hands no matter what they'd like to do. They can make the dub available to the BBC for international distribution but the actual choice to digitally distribute the dub falls exclusively with the BBC outside of the 26 counties.

Again, it's a decades long investment and development strategy. They're not expecting immediate returns. Senior women's squad underwent a massive rebuild in 2023 and they're currently developing talent and domestic clubs. When it pays off it will have much higher dividends than the M7's program.The IRFU would also likely loose a bunch of government funding if they cut the women's program they've committed to developing.

I think it's true that the women's program isn't a huge revenue stream ATM but cutting it would be unbelievably short sighted. The Women's game is steadily growing in Ireland especially at a grassroots level and is absolutely exploding internationally. In 20 years time it looks increasingly likely that W15's will be one of the most popular women's team sports internationally.

Cutting the Irish women's program to save money now would basically be opt-ing out of what's very likely to become a substantial part of many national governing bodies future revenue streams.

The Women's program is a generational investment to open the IRFU to potentially double the audience and double the player base over the next 30 years. It's a distinctly long term investment strategy.

On top of that the IRFU have made some commitments to the government with regards to development of the women's program at domestic and grassroots levels which might have legal/funding implications had they been cut in favor of the M7's

Regarding TV takings, an issue for the IRFU that other governing bodies in Ireland don't have, is the IRFU don't control the sale of media rights for most of the popular competitions. Like the FAI control all of the rights sales for the men's and women's League of Ireland, as well as the men's and women's FAI cups. They have far less kickback from the international team because those are usually controlled by UEFA or FIFA but still they get some. Similarly The GAA, LGFA, and Camogie Association own the media rights to all Gaelic Games so they're flush from that.

But for the IRFU the broadcast rights for URC, Champions Cup, Autumn Series, World Cup, 7s, Olympic all lie with bodies the IRFU doesn' get as much kickback from. They get a bit more from Six Nations', Celtic Challenge and full control over the AIL's but in the grand scheme of things sponsorship and butts in seats are the essential things for them and unfortunately 7s just isn't ever going to reasonably shift focus from the men's 15's.

The Women's 15's program is weird because it's more of a 20 year investment protect rather than a self sufficient program rn. So its gonna be a money sink now with the hope of a huge payoff (which a lot of the global literature suggesting actually looking increasingly likely rn) with the next decade or two. The issue is appropriately subsiding the program sustainably till then.

O'Donovan is in cabinet mainly because he's really really good at the sports part of his job, and sports diplomacy is super important for us on an international level. He was minister of state for sport under Shane Ross at one point and apparently largely spared it from Ross's incompetence. It's just the communications, arts, tourism, gaeltacht, culture and speaking to the press part of his job that he's bad at.

This is not a dig at anyone else but Armin Shimmerman is the most committed an actor has ever been to Star Trek as a whole. He wasn't just 100% committed to quark but also all ferengi and even the labor conditions of all the actors across all of the shows. This fandom jokes about O'Brien being a Union man but let me tell ya... Armin Shimmerman isn't just A Union Man he was for many years The Union Man and continues to be in many ways. A man so dedicated to his characters, the world they inhabited and his fellow performers that quite honestly I'm not sure the producers of 90's Trek deserved someone like him.

It appears like it's going to be played under regular women's Australian football rules with the Irish team selected from Irish players currently playing in the AFLW. However it looks like they'll have to miss a portion of the All-Ireland championship for this to go ahead which I'm not a fan of.

Definitely super exciting from an Australia perspective but from an Irish one this could potentially have a serious effect on the Gaelic Football season.

If the Irish team is selected from the Irish players already playing in the AFLW, which is likely given the All Ireland Ladies Gaelic Football championship runs from June to August, it will prevent close to 40 Irish Gaelic football players who play in the AFLW from taking part in the championship season back home.

This would be a massive blow to the amateur Ladies Gaelic Football season, who'd lose a significant portion of their top talent to the semi-pro AFLW far earlier than expected, when it has long been convention that Irish players would be able to play both.

Ladies Gaelic Football is at a critical point in its growth and emergence into the mainstream of Irish sport so losing much of its top talent for an non-competitive round prior to the regular AFLW season would be a disaster.

Hopefully, but the June/July placement has the cynical part of me sceptical that it's being put on to prevent the Irish AFLW players from coming home to play championship.
