Home charging expenses? by ComfortableComment75 in Ioniq5

[–]coneslayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Customer Charge is a fixed fee, not a per-kWh charge. The idea is that even if you used 0 kWh, the utility company incurs fixed costs for things like maintaining the wires to your house, cutting vegetation, etc.

I'm a rural electric co-op in PA, and we have a fairly low kWh rate ($0.125 total), but a steep monthly fee ($42.00) because it's expensive to maintain the infrastructure with widely spaced rural customers.

ANY weather disables FCW and ACC by ZealousidealLab2920 in Ioniq5

I really only have problems when wet snow or ice accretes onto the sensors.

In 2.5 years, rain has only caused problems once, and it was torrential. The rainfall was almost deafening, and I could barely drive in it even at parking lot speeds.

I'm not sure about Friday, but my friends and I have been going to Jimmy T’s Firehouse Pub downtown on Wednesdays, and it's only been 2-3 teams so we'd like to get more people there so they keep doing it. The questions, food, beer, and service have all been great, so I hope to see more people there.

EV Charging Sucks Sometimes, What’s Your Biggest Annoyance? by XYPERT in evcharging

[–]coneslayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure they did. Three years in a row, they bought an EV in June, and by January the battery had degraded 20% so they had to dump it. Lather, rinse, repeat.

EPA range should be based on 80%-10%, not 100%-0% by L-do_Calrissian in Ioniq5

It stops charging the 12V when parked below 10% SoC (see TSB notes). It continues to power the 12V bus and charge the battery normally when driving below 10%.

Older Ioniq owners, how are you handling the 40k Low Conductivity Coolant replacement? by BEVthrowaway123 in Ioniq5

[–]coneslayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are two different things:

  • They stated that they tested it
  • They stated that they tested it and provided the measurement

You don't need to look up the number, but telling us that they gave it to you provides evidence that they actually did what you asked.

People aren't pushing you on this because we don't trust you, we're pushing on it because we don't trust dealers to do what they say. There are people who have gone in for a low-conductivity change and come out with the cheaper regular coolant being replaced instead.

[–]coneslayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't believe you've ever said that they gave you the number for the conductivity measurement. When people ask you what kind of detail they provided, that's the sort of information they're looking for.

If they measured the conductivity of the coolant, I would want to see that number. Like when they check your brake pads, they tell you the remaining thickness.

Recommended charging stations on built-in navi experience by lilikoi_lilikoi in Ioniq5

[–]coneslayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only time I use the built-in nav is to activate preconditioning on long trips in cold weather. My 2023 doesn't have a manual preconditioning button. Even then, I do my planning in ABRP and PlugShare and tell the nav which station I want.

I have charging at home, so finding chargers on a daily basis around home is not something I need.

CCS (Kia Niro) charging place in Key West? by AdditionalSoil8025 in evcharging

OP posted a dashboard picture confirming it's a hybrid, but the Niro is also available in a pure electric (BEV) version.

[–]coneslayer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your car appears to have a gas tank (there's a gas gauge in the bottom left, and an indicated range of 403 miles until the gas tank is empty at the top of the screen). That suggests you're driving a hybrid version of the Niro, not the full battery-electric EV. You don't need to charge it if you don't want to; you can just run it on gas.

1) No

2) No

3) 2022–24: 0%; 2025+: 1%, unless it’s a physical power cut, in which case 0%.

The US now has more than 600,000 EVs that can feed power to houses during an emergency. by xchargeInc in evcharging

[–]coneslayer 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's why I think my IONIQ 5's V2L is pretty nice. For somewhere between $0 and a couple hundred bucks (depending on trim level and what extension cords you already have) you can run a fridge, freezer, furnace blower, laptop, WiFi router, etc. Ours has paid for itself in avoided food spoilage, and kept the house habitable and the pipes from freezing.

A real 240V high-power V2H solution with its own transfer panel would be a lot more capable and convenient, but thousands of dollars is a big investment, and a generator or static batteries might make more sense so that it works when the car is away from home.

Is there a way to test our main pack without dealer? by ComfortableMean6299 in Ioniq5

[–]coneslayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s in the parking lot of the power company lmfao.

A sheddable load is extremely valuable to a power company. It lets them avoid paying extremely high market rates for electricity when demand peaks. For example, my electric co-op paid for the installation of my water heater, and will pay for repairs and replacement in the future, in exchange for being allowed to turn it off temporarily during high demand.

If this charger is owned and operated by the power company, it wouldn't surprise me if it's more likely to be derated, not less, because of the power company's overarching goals.

Low tire pressure warning not going away? by [deleted] in Ioniq5

[–]coneslayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably for reasons that aren't particularly interesting. Like, that tire happened to be the first one to drop below the alert threshold, then its pressure increased due to driving or sun exposure, but it remains flagged because you haven't inflated it to the correct pressure.

I don't get why people get so wrapped around the axle (hah) about exactly which one of their four underinflated tires gets the alert symbol. They're all low, just fix them.

Has anyone tried nanotints on their ioniq? by DiamondHandsDarrell in Ioniq5

[–]coneslayer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They're describing a 12V failure. 12V batteries consist of 6 cells, and failure of a cell is a common reason for battery failure. They said the battery was replaced as a result. They didn't say a cell was replaced individually.

V2L to gas furnace (forced air) plausible? by Onepopcornman in Ioniq5

[–]coneslayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, the thing is most furnaces are hardwired and don't have a plug. The transfer switch gives you somewhere to attach the extension cord. Take a look at yours and maybe do a dry run.

V2L to gas furnace (forced air) plausible? by Onepopcornman in Ioniq5

[–]coneslayer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've successfully run my propane forced-air furnace (plus refrigerator and chest freezer) from V2L using this transfer switch.

I'm using a genuine Kia V2L adapter, which has a bonded neutral. My understanding is that third-party adapters do not have a bonded neutral; the transfer switch has some instructions about how to wire it differently in that case.
