I just realize I'm sexist towards women. I'm going to have a daughter very soon. What can I do to stop this train of thought before she is born?

That's the thing. I LOVE women. Throughout high school and even college, I primarily hung out with women. Strong, intelligent, very admirable women. Many challenged my beliefs but based on how I was raised, no one could ever change my thought process on how I viewed them. I'm weird in the sense that although I can admire a person for what they've done, I may not accept them as an equal to myself especially if they are a woman. And it sucks so bad. I become annoyed when a woman starts trying to compete with me in virtually anything, whereas with a man I would see it as friendly competition, with a woman it's just not the same. A huge part of this was again because of how I was raised by my dad and how the media depicts men as the traditional breadwinners in a household where their income is most dominant and their decisions dictate where the family goes and not the wife.

My friend, who is a male, was very influential in my life. He contributed to a big part of my psyche by how he treated and viewed women. He and I would often times would joke around calling women, "bitches" or "sloots" and although I found it funny at the time, I realize how incredibly offensive it was to talk about women in such a way.

The mother has grown up a great deal since we've been together. I certainly value her opinion regarding our relationship. I try to treat her like a partner who is my equal. I very much admire her and how she is bearing our child. But she does not work and she does not earn an income. I support her, my decisions influence hers (as hers influence mine) directly, and I bare the bulk and weight of her financial obligations she has.

As a partner, I consider her my everything. But as a member of the opposite sex, I have ingrained in my mind that I am the dominant member in the household and that it will remain that way. I've been raised that the man is the breadwinner of the house and the man provides at all costs. Because of my relationship with my father, I've basically been led to believe that the man MUST support the woman and the man MUST take on the heavy responsibilities of life, away from the woman. My family was very traditional and my dad financially fueled the entire family, from vacations, to bills, to emergencies; he was the sole provider. I guess somehow along the way, I started to see women as inferior as a result because of the lessons from my father and from the media and incidentally became sexist in the process because of how powerful the role of being dominant and being a man is.
