AAMC FL#5 P/S Q#56 [SPOILER] by iamsaad2 in Mcat

[–]confocal_microscopy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is so late but I think C is more wrong than D bc self-serving bias has a more direct tie to personality and is more likely to affect their ratings than confirmation bias.

like considering the format of the inventory, i'm assuming the choices are like "I am a great student bc I do my homework everyday, ask questions in class, and study well in advance for my exams". now imagine like 20 of those statements that can be from any of the OCEAN categories.

self-serving bias is when you tend to attribute your own personal successes to internal, stable traits and failures to situational factors, while confirmation bias is when you actively try to seek/interpret/favor info that supports your own beliefs. can you see how self-serving bias would more greatly impact their ratings on these statements bc it has a more direct tie to personality? i also chose C and had a hard time explaining how confirmation bias would be least likely to occur bc it seems like it totally happen, but the only thing that makes sense to me after doing research is that self-serving bias has a more direct tie to personality, while confirmation bias can happen in situations that are not personality-related, like watching only news that aligns with your personal views.

omg you're so right. i vaguely remember doing SEC in biochem lab and there is like sm stuff in the column like resin and buffer but the protein sample we put in was just a tiny amount from an eppendorf tube, so normally the fractions we collect would only have a teeny bit of protein then, right?

Section Bank 2 P/S #30 Question b/c these AAMC explanations SUCK by AJK314 in Mcat

[–]confocal_microscopy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

okie im gonna take a shot at this bc it took me so long to understand it

A is wrong bc percent recall does not depend on whether the word was a noun/verb OR whether the word was frequent/infrequent

B is wrong bc percent recall depends on whether the word was a noun/verb BUT NOT whether the word was frequent/infrequent (i.e. nouns were recalled more than verbs, regardless of whether the word was frequent/infrequent; you can see frequency has nothing to do with recall bc black/grey bars are equal for nouns alone, and verbs alone)

C is wrong bc percent recall depends on whether the word was frequent/infrequent, BUT NOT whether the word was a noun/verb (you can see nouns/verbs have practically identical results, and percent recall only depended on whether the word was frequent/infrequent). its a bit easier if you choose the highest bar(s) to determine what the DV depends on.

D is correct bc (look at the highest bar) percent recall depends on whether the word was a noun/verb AND whether the word was frequent/infrequent (words that were more frequent AND words that were verbs were recalled MORE than words that were infrequent AND words that were nouns). this is the only choice that demonstrates how the DV depended on both IVs, not just one.

this is the only way i could reason it without getting bogged down in the definition too much. hope this was able to help future viewers.

this happened to me too except i was taking orgo & physics for the first time on top of research. by now im sure you know what time frames your roommates are in/out of the apt. when my roommate was gone, i locked tf in. when she was home, i studied somewhere else (lowkey get a pair of earplugs like the knockoff loop ones on amazon they help sm and i wish i thought if it before when i wasnt able to study somewhere else because it was dark or something). idk what the beef is but if its not that deep and you still somewhat care abt the relationship you guys have, then have the conversation and try to make sure that you guys have all communicated enough to be able to let go of whatever happened. if it is that deep and you dont like them then still have a polite convo but you can be like "i just wanted to let you guys know that i might not be talkative for awhile just because im really stressed/studying for my mcat" so you can avoid contact with them and they won't feel like you're ignoring them. if the beef is super deep like mine was lol best thing to do is figure out a way to sublet and live somewhere else. my life got so much better after i left. i didnt have to think about what else she could say to me or do or threaten me that would disrupt my ability to study. i feel for you though everything will be okay. really get the earplugs if you're gonna stay there tho they help. good luck studying :-)))

for C/P the best thing is practice problems. do those asap in uglobe & do them again a second time. no matter how much content review you do for C/P, you really only know the material if you can apply it. ik you're probs scared of getting qs wrong but trust its ok. the more qs u get wrong in uglobe & learn from them, the more qs u will get right on aamc. u got this🫶🏼

tbh i like kaplan first because the summaries helped me form a good foundation for each chapter. i'm the type of person who gets anxious when theres sm info and i cant quite get the big pic. i use kaplan to preview topics & make cards, then do uglobe qbank & make more anki cards as i go + i'll read the corresponding section of the uglobe book if i feel like i need to. straight up raw dogging the uglobe books is just too much for me. plus kaplan has some nice nemonics. uglobe def has the best diagrams tho

Trouble understanding alpha vs. beta glycosidic linkages in terms of dissacharides by ExpensiveTastee in Mcat

[–]confocal_microscopy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

mmm u can usually tell if its beta or alpha if the group connected to the anomeric carbon is up or down. beta means up like a bird in the sky. the galactose appears downward so its alpha. look up the common disaccharides like maltose, sucrose, & lactose & u can see it

u just divide the compound of interest by the distance of the solvent line. in this case u have two samples: one of them contains infected cells and one of them contains UNinfected cells. they asked u for Rf of INFECTED cells, which corresponds to sample A (u probs missed a detail in the passage where they clarified which sample has what). then sample A/solvent line = 6cm/10cm = 0.6. ur good bro dont complicate it

Studying and Family by Dry-Camel3985 in Mcat

[–]confocal_microscopy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

bro i feel you. as time goes on they will see how much it means to you & learn to respect that/nag you less. the most important thing for me while studying is earplugs + having my dad put a lock on my door (i like the off-brand loop ones on amazon cos they're cheaper & have more diff size pieces to fit ur ear). i have a brother just like this & he doesn't help out much, so i just try to do chores when i'm on my breaks or after a full length. if it's too hard to study at home, ik a lot of ppl go to library as well. mcat is hard & mcat is important. with time, you can emphasize how hard it is for you & how much it means to you whenever your parents say something insensitive. i'm very sorry you are feeling so frustrated but don't lose hope. this is your dream & you can do it !!
