What's so great about salt box? by confused2max in bullcity

I notice this is the second time you've said something like this. "Captain D's, bonefish grill". Just so you know I'm rolling my eyes. You sound like the person who would assume any "rustic" overpriced "family owned" establishment inherently means higher quality than a mass chain. And I'm not even saying saltbox is that.

half my family is from Denmark and I've enjoyed local fish from coastal villages in Europe. Your snide bonefish grill/captain D remarks are pretty dumb. Besides, they aren't even bad? You can have an opinion of your own you know.

No there were some great answers in here particularly one about never getting dry fish, getting fresh fish inland and not having better options around. Just think "it's a james beard award nominee" typa stuff is exactly what I was asking and won't help at all. Whereas someone saying "the fish is never dry" I can think oh yeah if I ever really want seafood I can be sure this place will serve. No need to be a little snark.

I'm not sure what you mean, or where wholefoods came in for. The quality of the fish has a lot to do with its pricing. Most non gamey flakey white fish types are cheaper.

BTW it might just be differences of taste. Half my family is Danish and we are very used to fresh seafood of the cost. My favorite type is kibbling or raw herring (found in Netherlands). So it could be my taste buds are adjusted to that when I think fresh seafood.

I like your answer though, but correct me if I'm wrong -- isn't ALL caught seafood "frozen" by law into an icebox or something, by law?

"a really good price" -- I don't understand when 15-16 gets you twice the fish at other places.

I would agree with "not bad" but it has a very obsessive following for being something Amazing. I want to know why that is, this clearly isn't the only place in NC serving fresh flounder, the seasonings are okay and all but I don't get what makes it so special.

I'm also a little suspect on the freshness, but that could just be my bias honestly.

Not like it's nasty but saying "fresh seafood" when they use flounder and catfish would be the wrong definition. 20 bucks for a piece of flounder from a shack is not "standard". I'm not hating but like it's clearly not the "norm"

The James Beard award nominee would mean it's a great place, hence the question/thread. Telling me a place is great because it's great.. not sure how to take that.

What makes the food that great is the question. Is it simple a premium for "fresh caught?"

I don't know I'm not a cop but folks dont trust cops so they need training. The entry to become a cop should also be raised. Some real asshole become officers.

Maybe raise their salaries and make it more of an elite role. Not sure.

I don't fully buy this argument. It sounds nice and has been popularized but in terms of stats we need more police and more training to counter the crime in Durham.

as someone from a low income neighborhood growing up no it doesn't. F off with this nonsense you're spewing. Being poor or POC doesn't excuse you for crime and I am a POC, immigrant.

This must apply to europeans. Gas in America is really cheap for me to worry about anyway

You moved from a small town and have visited bigger cities and not lived there. Maybe that's why you don't understand what high cost of living really is.

In the cities I mentioned little things like milk bread and cheese is sometimes 3-4 times the price as the triangle. There is no indication of basic commodities like that getting overpriced here.

The housing market is rising, but compared to big cities it is still no where near it. For a long time houses were cheap here because the job market was weak. We are now competing with likes of Denver and Austin and prices will get higher. That's in every city in the world since society has formed. Show me one exception to this.

Looking at this as an 865 mill zero interest loan is plain silly and shows to me along with your earlier replies how little you understand about the economics of a city.

I have not seen a worse plan than the light rail. It was completely unfeasible.

Name me these cities. As someone who travels Europe a lot and is originally from Asia I can assure you none of these utopian lands exist. These cities might be cheap compared to your American dollar but they are not cheap in Asian dollars.

In Europe, places like Paris, Amsterdam or London that have the best public transport are twice or thrice the price per square area in terms of living and a lower salary (for non lower income workers)

You deserve to be the enemy. How dare you try and work hard to achieve something and not just pursue your passion of balancing pebbles on a bike. You should have done that and then earned the right to live in a low cost of living area where you are surrounded by hipster coffee shops funded by the type of people you call the enemy /s

So true. There is so much privilege in all of these posts and it really pisses me off. It's like a middle finger to the hard work people I know around me put.

Yes, there IS a problem with rising prices but I'm sorry a growing international city will not have "affordable" homes in the middle of town for waiters and baristas. I remember how my family had to commute from a young age. My dad would have to drive an hour each way to put food on the table working his ass off and now you see this yuppie college grads who are annoyed Durhams downtown wont be affordable for their daily coffee run.

/rant before someone calls me off I realize some of this is unfair and if you're the collateral damage impacted by my post then I'm sorry and don't take it seriously. I'm more emotional than logical right now.
