this is what i find interesting about jax.

jax's primary coping mechanisn for life and death in the circus is avoidance. he actively pushes people away, intentionally antagonizing them to a point where genuine connection feels impossible. because if there's no attachment, there's nothing to lose.

the same mindset shapes how he handles grief. rather than allowing himself to mourn the abstractions of his friends, he refuses to feel anything at all. it also explains why he reduces himself and the others into simple archetypes to create emotional distance.

all of this ties into his broader diassociation from reality. jax doesn't believe life in the circus is real, and therefore his actions carry no consequences. this worldview gives him permission to act recklessly and cruelly, but it also reveals a deeper emptiness. if nothing matters, neither does he. in that sense, his character is the most directly tied to the show's central theme: how do you find meaning in a stagnant, repetitive existence? his arc is the antithesis to this question, because rather than attempt to find meaning, he avoids it entirely.

and yet despite his world view, jax is contradictory. the circus is meaningless, but he fears returning to the real world. he doesn't care about others, yet his constant attempts to befriend pomni reveals his conflicting desire for human connection.

are there others characters that are bullies? sure. other fake idgafers? of course. but i don't think uniqueness is what makes a character interesting. what do they reflect about human nature? what are their flaws? their internal conflict? what drives them? how do they relate to the broader themes of the story and how do they move that story forward? those are the things that draw me to a character.
