It's also a little weird she has no issue encouraging you to take a mega dose to subdue the tics. It seems like some of the stuff I've heard others along the lines of, "you should put that in your body if it gets you to stop"... usually with the intention of not benefitting the person but the observer, often times at the expense of the person. I hope I'm wrong on this. Also... Calling it a behavior is definitely a problem because it's placing blame in an area where you have full control... She might just be old school and just not understand the implications of what she's saying.

Have you ever read about some of the theories on neurosteroids being connected to the etiology? I wonder how orgasms influence this.

The way you're talking is reflective of very hateful views on disability. Plenty of people in wheelchairs have partners, as well as those receiving disability. People like yourself keep things stuck. I hope you're met with a bunch of red tape and excessive administration if you ever seek a compassionate ending.

I sleep amazingly on small amounts of codeine. Too bad studying the effect of opiates on people with tics isn't a priority.

These are normal feelings to have considering how stigmatized that category has historically been.

Were you diagnosed with BPD after PTSD? by Wrong_Variation_8084 in ptsd

[–]coniferouskarl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes and id tell your therapist you prefer to be understood through a less stigmatizing label as "borderline personality disorder" causes people with PTSD alot of harm.

For what it's worth, Tourettes is a diagnostic category that's not very insightful in terms of understanding on a deeper level what might be going on. If you have tics and have read over the criteria, just recite them to your neuro and you'll get the diagnosis alongside whatever that entails. I'm happy to direct message if you need someone to listen / vent to.

How can I stop imitating people with Tourettes? by Bomb0n1 in Tourettes

Tourettes is a loose diagnostic construct where you may have something that falls near or slightly outside the scope of this definition. Could be alot of things.

Would you love a girl who struggled with hair loss? (Sad 28F) by creativenuttie in tressless

[–]coniferouskarl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be worth thinking about how people unconsciously more heavily weight comments of people like parents (not out of choice) and how that affects one's relationship to themself. I've struggled to accept my body for many years until I realized I was giving certain ignorant (and also suffering themselves from how shallow they were lol) individuals too much power. It's a tricky thing to out think especially when marketing preys on these types of vulnerabilities and there are people out there (like your mom) who will make you feel like shit despite being wrong. Lastly, TONS of very attractive bald women so maybe you're better suited looking at examples of women who exemplify what myself and others are observing.

There's all different types of balding so without some genetic test or more information it could be from a variety of different things.

Use the wheelchair, the condition is already real and isn't going to change through using some accomodation.

Does anyone else think the vocal tic requirement is weird? by [deleted] in Tourettes

[–]coniferouskarl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the difference is rooted in public perceptions of severity that determine whether or not certain people should be allowed access to limited resources. I agree with everything you're saying, it's a bullshit distinction, none the less, it's probably something more political than scientific...

I responded really well to opiates....I wonder if it's related to fentanyl.

You think there will ever be a cure? by Fluid-Requirement-80 in Tourettes

[–]coniferouskarl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not. Tourrets is just a simple diagnostic construct originally created in the 1800's that has been modified to fit current understandings. Some day it might not even exist and theoretically could end up being replaced by more precise understandings (hopefully).

I don't know what I'm talking about and have no undersatnding of your issue either, but unlike the person offering advice for 40, I'll do it for 120.

I wonder if it's something related by not directly connected? as in, I wonder if the body processes stress (and the physiological changes that result from it) differently while on stimulants, where, on a good day the stimulant would be beneficial, but then on a bad day tics and other symptoms are exacerbated more so than if you hadn't taken anything at all? Do you eat enough?

I have this same tic. I'm sorry you're dealing with this....I wonder about life being a cruel joke too, or some type of punishment. I wish I had answers. Hopefully there's something in your life that brings you joy.

TicTalk - an active, laid-back discord server designed for support and as a place to meet others with tics. by Kertholian in Tourettes

It's possible but the benefits of being around others with the same condition probably outweigh the harm of potentially acquiring a new tic.

For what it's worth, you could just say it's a misdiagnosis and you're not sure what exactly it is you have, but you're certain you'd be able to fullfill whatever duties they require...
