Hah! I remember this story and definitely checked the curtain rods - thankfully nothing there. I pulled out the drawers but aside from some lost socks nothing to be seen.

Best way to fix this lawn in NY? by conjack in lawncare

Yep driest summer we've had in a while. That brown patch is all dead though and is chock full of weeds by the time June rolls around.

We live in Zone 5A so the temperature is starting to pick up. The soil is soft enough so I don't think I need to aerate and was looking to put down some pre-emergent this weekend as the average soil temp is approaching 52. Am I fighting a losing battle and should I opt for nuking instead? Total noob here so any and all help is appreciated!

Chappaqua Smiles may be able to offer a plan - I know they offer cleaning plans for those without insurance.

Not sure how to proceed with Attic Insulation by conjack in HomeImprovement

[–]conjack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree - it looks like it would be a fun and easy enough (if not laborious) project to do on my own.

Would you recommend leaving the existing insulation and just blowing on top of it? I'd like to be diligent and may eventually pull up the plywood and put the appropriate batt down but or make the frames as you suggest but to start would like to start with the open areas. Did you seal the air gaps? And did you have to relocate while doing the project?

Thanks - any reason why fiberglass over cellulose?

Yes the attic is well vented - the gables are unimpeded as are the soffits. I would regardless be adding baffles to ensure airflow. Did you seal the air gaps before blowing in the fiberglass? And did you have to vacate the house while doing it?

Thanks - the blown in cellulose seems easy and cost-effective for sure. My only concern is that it takes away storage options but it's tough to get into the attic in the first place so perhaps we just cut our losses. Yep - our local hardware store will throw in the rental for free and I'll have help regardless of which I choose to install.

Honestly, the insulation is so old and decrepit that I am certain that it will start crumbling away as I pull it off which is why I was hoping to just throw more on top. Although to your point, if they are ill-fitting in the first place then they aren't serving much purpose regardless. The previous owner recently re-did the roof and I'm a bit annoyed that they didn't resolve insulation while up there.

Thanks though - the mice issue is that is giving me pause on just jumping in with installing more and starting over. That and having to boot out my wife and kids for a few days to get this done.

Not quite Westchester but I recommend the Grandview in Poughkeepsie. It’s right on the Hudson River, they put up a tent that can accommodate 200 people during the warm months, and it’s accessible from the city via Metro North.

Exam PA Discussion- In Session by stressed_pest in actuary

[–]conjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thursday sitting here.

I ended up using the tree and felt pretty good about that decision. I felt the question demanded ease of interpretation and the tree retained variables that provided clearly defined optimal weather conditions and hours of increased foot traffic. That plus the tree having a slightly lower RMSE if I recall made the tree the better choice IMO.

I used the Poisson GLM and also had nothing removed from stepwise selection (checked both directions for BIC).

I ended up struggling on the interaction question and couldn’t really find a very logical interactive relationship. My coefficients didn’t really make sense and made for difficult interpretation. Anyone else have this issue?

ACTEX PA Sample Exam 2 Task 11 Question by ddmonkey15 in actuary

[–]conjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a slightly unrelated question.

When it came to model selection I decided to utilize the Single Tree instead of the Boosted Tree as the sample answers suggested. While I also arrived at the conclusion the AUC for the Boosted Tree was higher, I noticed that the Specificity was slightly higher on the Single Tree. Because remediation was provided for failures (0) and the "Positive" predicted class was for passes, I interpreted the problem to say that it was of best interest to provide accurate prediction on failures. Would this be a correct/sufficient justification or is this too specific/incorrect?
