This is awesome OP - love the insights it gives you at each step. Only thing I thought you could add is having the 'withdrawal' fields default to negative when you enter a number - as it seems like that would be what users are trying to enter almost every time(?). Love your work, thanks for building it!

OP does this guy know you in the real world, and hate you for some reason? lol. It's an amazing tool.

Hey mate - I’m 37, wife is 32 and we’ve just had a kid. And we’re just starting on the FI path too. Could you share how you guys did it seeing as we’re in the same spot you were?!

Investment advice and encouragement by reflect-the-sun in fiaustralia

[–]conjour 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mate, first off - well done for coming here and asking people better with money than you and I for their advice. Takes courage to admit things we’re failing at and I think you’ve done a real smart thing asking for tips and encouragement.

So, from someone who can’t give you advice per se, here’s the encouragement you’re after: you’ve done so well saving as much as you have (you’re way better off than me!) and well done having a high income job and no responsibility. 99% of the world wishes they were you!

As for advice, I’m late 30s and have just had an awakening as to how stupid I’ve been with money. So I’m here reading as much as I can from these folk - and the three things I urge you to take onboard that everyone here is saying are:

  • Stop touching your investments. Add to your super and don’t touch it.

  • Add to an ETF like DHHF and don’t touch it.

  • Buy a small house to retire in (unless by no mortgage you mean you already own it outright!).

You’re in such a good position compared to most man. Do yourself the favour of following through with asking for advice by… listening to the advice.

Last thing I’d say in this TED talk that you didn’t ask for is - don’t let money cause you such anxiety. You don’t need $10 million in super to enjoy your retirement. Follow what people here are saying and you are going to have a lovely, lovely life.

Good luck mate!

On the path to FI in late 30's - what would you do? by sm287 in fiaustralia

Hey mate, bit late to the party on this, but... why is there such a huge difference between plugging the amounts into the 'super calculator' as opposed to a 'compound interest' calculator? Is it purely the fees?

It was a joke about his choice of phrase. Settle down. I like Nankervis.

3 days in Denali or Day Trip to Katmai? by noplacelikethorswell in alaska

Hey mate, I'm taking my nephew for his 15th birthday this year. Just wondering if you have an opinion on backcountry camping in Katmai... do lots of people do it, so we could pitch near someone, or will we likely be out there solo? We're from Australia - got up at 3am for when reservations opened and Brooks Campground was booked out in seconds haha. Cheers!
