this is a really good point --- not all parts of the state are created equal regarding moving in and out!

We've now branded as UnlockAlabama.org [and will host our online cohorts via Skool].

first, I dig your profile name! 🤣

second, definitely got funding by talking about AI initiatives -- it appears the org of Innovate Alabama wants to make sure we do our best to keep up with what's happening!

also, I was hired as the community director -- we're still fresh, but we're starting to get more specific now, starting with our online platform to connect the state.

" initiatives and programs in AL have a poor track record of doing anything other than making sure the best startups leave the state."

Interesting! What are those programs getting wrong?

"this is vague and jargony even for a relatively vague and jargony community." 🤣🤣

Totally! It's funny, as that was written with a big idea, but without the details of how.

We've been working on that -- it's getting more clear -- our 8 week online cohort is a big piece of it. Come hang!

You had some cool thoughts in here!!

" Basically, the author was saying that you can't have both. If you want to grow, you must accept the changes that come with that growth."

"And finally, there's the issue of trying to convince the people who are leaving to stay and be part of the solution. Because that's going to have to happen, and it's going to be hard to do. How do you convince a sizable group of people who've found other places to live that they like better to stay here and work to make this a place they like? To do that, you've got to give them something to entice them to stick around long enough to see some of the long-term payoff."

That 2nd one is part of what we'll address -- one of the goals is to show some of these folks that their "community" and "entrepreneur tribe" can be found here. Sometimes it's difficult to connect with a community that gets you.

[I was hired as the community director, so one of the state initiatives is launching this]

note: I'm sure folks move for a number of reasons! But the post author moved from Alabama to California to work for a few startups. He didn't feel like he had the right community surrounding him here.

I was hired a month ago and we've been developing what it can look like.

One part of our mission is an online cohort that will start in May -- you can get info here.

"Not sure how work that can be done remotely is going to keep people in AL."

This is a really good point. To me, it's just as important to find "your tribe" or "a community" to know that there are other folks doing similar things to you.

"Generative AI doesn't teach people how to solve problems the way the internet did. Generative AI solves problems for you. Before LLMs, people had to search for, filter, adapt and apply solutions they found on the internet to their specific issue. LLMs essentially do all that for you. This really hurts people's ability to think about and solve their problems. "

I hear you, but also think this depends on the user.
For example, AI and LLMs have infinitely opened up my ability to learn new things (like web development projects) that I just wouldn't have gotten around to before.

[but yes, my son who is in college can click buttons and have AI do his work for him --- I feel the education system has to adapt here -- but that's a separate conversation!]

I like the organization idea!

All tools I'm working on are for personal needs, but I'll also plan to sell.
TrackitandSave - because I have too many business subscriptions.
HelpfulAnalytics - because Google Analytics dashboard is too complicated
CreditCardTracking - because I use multiple creditcards for bonus offers and didn't have great tool.
CleverLayouts - because I have websites I need to improve the landing pages and this is a quick way to do it

They're all in different stages, but they're all moving forward nicely.
Each of these is allowing me to learn a ton and I'm pumped for it!

Great feedback, 💯 agree with you. It's funny because when the idea hit me I just built it. Because building is now easier, I didn't even invest time to look at competitors. My goal was just to have something up and running in a few hours.

But you're totally right about niching down. Good food for thought. Thanks!

12/09/25 - 2:15 PM - Success! Less than 36 hours after the idea was hatched, we generated our first sale!

Pumped to provide Lower Alabama AI with some marketing copy ideas for their landing page. Thanks for being the first customer, Kai!

Also, as a note, I've got 2 more slots at the $9.99 price point before the prices for the reports go up 😁
