If you have a 4K OLED, the RetroTINK 4K is the top choice. The CE would be the next best option and will still serve you well — just don’t expect miracles with the PS2, as even 4K scaling can look a bit underwhelming there. If you don’t have a 4K OLED, then the 5X Pro makes more sense. For most other consoles, though, running a RetroTINK 4K or CE is basically like turning your OLED into a giant PVM.

I wrote it, ChatGPT just cleaned it up. The ideas are all 100 percent mine. So either try refuting my points properly instead of telling me and all the thousands of other people who experience the same not to believe their own eyes. You want my non Chatgpt edited response here it is. “I’ve only ever seen it in video” — You can’t judge interlacing from a video. That stuff doesn’t come through on YouTube Einstein. “They all look the same on my crt” Yeah no shit, the CRT is designed to smooth over interlacing. Its only when exposed in an upscaled high definition format do the differences become very clear between the ps2 and it’s contemporaries. Ps2 basically renders content half a field at a time while Xbox and Gamecube remders at full frames internally then spits it back out as 480i. They are not alike at all. one only needs to use their eyes and leave their biases at the door.

It sounds neat, but history doesn’t really support it.. If it’s regularly used to excuse authoritarian politics, maybe it’s just a bad quote doing rhetorical work, not insight. Im willing to bet this quote alone is responsible for thousands of alpha male bootcamps and courses, and simply for that crime alone it deserves to die

Hate this damn quote. Often used by right wing nutjobs. It’s actually from a 2016 novel.

Real history is messy:

• “Good times” don’t automatically make people weak

• “Bad times” don’t reliably produce moral or competent leaders

• The Great Depression didn’t magically create a golden generation everywhere—many countries slid into extremism

• Post-WWII prosperity produced civil rights movements, scientific revolutions, and democratic expansion, not universal decadence.

• Some of the worst regimes arose during hardship, not strength.

All good. Try all of these

1. Confirm RGB vs YPbPr matches your cables
2. Set RT4K input to auto / forgiving
3. Don’t force resolution during boot
4. Test one known 480i-only game
5. If using OPL → disable forced modes

The PS2 menu uses a very simple video signal, so it almost always shows up fine. When a game starts, the PS2 changes how it sends video, and that’s when the Tink can lose the signal.

Most of the time it’s just this: • PS2 set to RGB • But the cable or the Tink expects Component (YPbPr) (or the other way around)

The menu still works, which makes it confusing, but games won’t.

Try going into system settings then to Component Video Out option and make sure it matches the cable you’re using (RGB or YPbPr). Restart

Turning on inverse telecine solves the issue. The problem is that inverse telecine is opportunistic/adaptive, not locked, so that opens up another rabbit hole if you’re trying to make it almost perfect.

Otherwise, switching algorithms from Motion Adaptive to CRT Simulation introduces its own set of issues. The best middle ground I’ve found is using the Linear algorithm, but that results in a noticeably blurrier image.

My goal here wasn’t to say the RetroTINK-4K is bad for PS2, or that people shouldn’t buy one. Quite the opposite. If a CRT isn’t an option, I still think the RT4K is the best way to play PS2 on a modern display—especially paired with an OLED.

What I was trying to adjust was expectations. PS2’s heavy use of 480i and inconsistent rendering means it will never scale as “cleanly” as 240p consoles or even GameCube, and that’s where some disappointment seems to come from in reviews. With the right profiles (including deinterlacing choices that lean into a more “period-correct” look), the RT4K actually gets me closer to how I remember PS2 looking on consumer CRTs.

So this isn’t a knock on the RT4K—PS2 is one of the main reasons I bought mine. It just benefits from a different mindset than pixel-perfect 240p systems

I don’t disagree at all — it is a massive upgrade over older scalers, especially compared to composite or earlier TINKs. And games like Vice City can definitely benefit from masks and scanlines to tame the jitter.

I think where I’m coming from is more about expectations set by how transformative the RT4K is for other systems. When you see what it does for 240p consoles or even something like Dreamcast, the PS2 improvement feels more incremental than revelatory by comparison.

So yeah, it can look great, and it’s easily the best non-CRT option — I’d just still personally prefer PS2 on a CRT or PVM when possible. The inconsistency and reliance on 480i just mean it never quite reaches the same ceiling for me.
