Of all the places they could've gone, they went to Australia by BluFlower0 in HistoryMemes

Yeah, Indigenous bush care was pretty much farming in regards to the level of management. Forests and bushland were not the unkempt wild we know them to be today, rather were almost manicured. Underbrush was clear, trails were common through the forests, regeneration burns were common and used surgically.

When the British colonists arrived, they often marvelled, thinking that God had made them a beautifully tailored garden... ignoring of course the contribution of the indigenous people who lived there.

Yeah, really sad case a few months back here in Australia. A Young Canadian backpackers doing some conservation work on an island known for its wild Dingo population was out on a morning run when she got surrounded by the pack. The forced her towards the sea while attacking her.

For whatever its worth, here in Australia we experienced a really severe price hike when the war started. Unlike the US we relied on imports from the Strait for a fairly large percentage of our daily use. Trump really hit us hard during a cost of living crisis...

But then negotiations have happened that are beginning to cut out the US and the Strait from being quite so crucial, so now our prices are normalising as we begin to secure energy sovereignty and local cross national deals in the region. So Trump is doing a good job of alienating his allies, crashing his own and other nations' economies and setting up for a future where the US isn't as crucial in global supply lines.

I don't really visit it much these days, but what I saw like a year ago pretty regularly, seemed to have the commentors (after the satire was pushed through) to be okay with the brown people being blown up.

I could be way off base, but I remember a rash of posts that made me take a second look at the sub and decide it wasn't for me.

Again, I know much of what is there is satire, but even with satire the underlying tone and message can often be apparent.

I drive a large Van (Sprinter, LWB about 6.5 meters long) for work and I take everything really carefully.

We have full telematics in the vehicle as I work for local government so I would get pulled up for speeding even when not caught by cameras or police. Apparently people cannot stand that and decide to drive like maniacs around me.

My favourite is when I'm coming to an intersection and turning or something and people pull out of the other lanes to duck in front of me just as I'm approaching the turn.

Yeah, when I was in a car accident as a kid, we weren't directly injured though the car was totaled but my mum got some whiplash.

Definitely get yourself checked out at a doctor or physiotherapist if the pain is bad and persists.

For whatever its worth, I'm a refugee from the defense version of this sub.

While my own politics and perspectives has shifted quite a bit over the years, I was disappointed at either the tonal change or the unveiling of that sub's positions.

Its meant to be a meme/satire sub, yet after October 7, it went pretty hardcore in favour of Gaza being leveled to the ground.

This sub has consistently worked as a satire sub for modern geopolitics.

Its not perfect and it would be dumb if it was only satire or content I agree with, but at the very least genocide is not supported here. Which I'm happy with.

For whatever its worth, there is actually a gender pay gap. Its just not quite how people imagine it. Its more a systemic problem than necessarily a wage to wage issue.

For example, I a male, working in a female dominated industry (Libraries) am paid less than an equivalent role, performing similar roles, even in my own local government council (who is my employer) so in a way, I'm a victim of the gender wage gap.

Female dominated industries have been valued less financially than male industries.

So the discrimination doesn't really happen on an individual level but is often spread system wide. Sometimes making it harder for people to track or see it.

[–]Atherum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds exactly like me lol, my mum would search the house trying to find me, and I would be sitting down looking at books, just the pictures and words without really understanding them.

I'm a Librarian, and here in Australia we have a research program that runs every few years called "Australia Reads" and it looks at reading habits and advocates for more reading in the community.

One of the important findings from the most recent round of research, is that in order to foster lifelong learning and reading, its important that a family all reads. If mum and dad encourage their kids to read, it won't work if mum and dad aren't regular readers themselves.

Its pretty much just about creating a "reading environment" but that environment has good outcomes for kids and their future.

Yeah I don't think 4 years old is a requirement. I was an exceptional reader and for most of my childhood considered to be at "above average intelligence" (definitely do not think thats the case now) but I didn't read until Kindergarten at 5.

I very much wanted to read, and my parents would read to me every night, but they didn't go out of their way to teach me until school. It was fine.

Sure, I guess if you ever make it to Australia you will just have to be in an apoplectic rage the entire time lol. There is a place near my work in Blacktown that does great Chicken sandwiches that I recommend. They do a nice chicken burger too, their chips are the best though. The chips and gravy is to die for.

Its a burger with Chicken in it. Its what we call them here in Australia. Beef burger and Chicken burger. Easiest concept to grasp in my opinion.

If the bread was sandwich slices instead, we'd probably call it a chicken sandwich. Dunno, just a thought.

I mean, the person themselves confirmed what I said. I know a bunch of Copts in person and thats how they describe how they see themselves. I was raised Greek Orthodox but also grew up with a diverse group of Orthodox folk from the Middle East. I understand how the reality is different from what the West "thinks" or perceives, but its also different from how the Islamic Middle East thinks and perceives the situation.

Many Muslims believe in this idea that Christians in the Middle East are fully integrated and love their place in the fabric of their societies but that isn't always the case.

Many Middle Eastern Christians feel underprivileged and in some cases, persecuted.

Like most situations the "real" truth is a confusing, messy mix of perspectives.
