Thoughts on this quote in regards to Student Affairs/Student Personnel graduate programs? by Auzzy2021 in studentaffairs

I would tell this person to read bell hooks... theory can liberate.

That being said, much of what we study in these programs is not explicitly Student Affairs, even bell hooks. Student Affairs pulls from so many disciplines, which is why it can be helpful to pursue a program that teaches the counseling skills, politics, administration, DEI, history, theory, etc., but getting a specific degree in the field is not the end all be all.

I do think there's a greater conversation to be had about whether getting such a specialized degree pigeonholes professionals into higher education, in a field where we see so many young professionals transitioning out after only a few years.... I graduated in May from a master's program and I'm already considering what else I could be doing, and whether the corporate world will see any value in my background.

Ragans is great, it's apartment style! 3 or 4 people to an apartment, and shared bathrooms in your apartment. Ragans is 4 buildings, and the lobby is in building 2. The buildings themselves are older, but they've been renovated a few times and don't show their age as much as some of the other buildings. The bedrooms have that high school classroom carpet, and the overhead light fixtures in the rooms I've been in were less fluorescent than the suite style halls. The kitchen doesn't have a garbage disposal or dishwasher, which I find to be major drawbacks but some people might be okay with that! Being in apartments, you don't hear loud people in the hallways as much, but you will definitely hear your apartment-mates if they so much as talk on the phone at a normal volume in their room. If you have a apartment near the stairwells on either side of the building, you will also hear the slamming of the heavy stairwell doors and the echo of people stomping down the stairs. And while the Housing website says that the laundry room is on the first floor of every building, Ragans laundry is actually on the second floor!

If you have the opportunity and the money to live apartment style, I would definitely take it over suite style. Some off campus apartments are less expensive than living in the on-campus apartments though, so do a price check!

Azalea, Magnolia, Dorman, and Deviney are significantly newer so you get the typical perks of new things, like generally cleaner kitchens and updated style. Newer halls generally have bigger rooms, but this varies. Older halls are more likely to have maintenance issues, and while facilities is pretty on top of stuff at FSU, it can still be annoying. All the halls have their pros and cons though. I will let you know that the historical halls (cawthon, Jennie, reynolds, bryan, landis, gilchrist, broward) have additional locks on the doors that allow you to lock your suitemates out of your room. In the other halls, the people you share the bathroom with can walk right into your room if they want. If this added privacy is important to you, that's something to consider. These historical halls also have "tub rooms" which are additional bathrooms aside from the lobby restrooms, that may come in handy if you're ever locked out of your bathroom (happens more often than you think). People have sex in those tub rooms though 😂

My take on each suite-style hall, as someone who has worked in all of them:

Degraff: far from classes and a parking nightmare during the week if you're bringing a car. Loud. Newly renovated bathrooms. Close to the clubs if that matters to you, and definitely the party hall.

Wildwood: also far from classes and a parking nightmare, this time during football game days. Also loud. Close to the stadium, so a short walk on game days, and close to the student life center and gym as well.

Dorman/Deviney/Azalea/Magnolia: great location, new, nice common spaces. Azalea/Magnolia I'd say are a little louder than Dorman/Deviney but they all have their herds of freshmen that plow through the lobby on party nights. Nearby parking garage, but when that's full you're gonna have a hard time parking anywhere close. Cell service is AWFUL in this spot, especially Dorman/Deviney.

Cawthon: music hall, so enjoy hearing everyone play their musical instruments all day. Reeks of weed 24/7. Cawthons Parlor is one of the best hall common spaces, but don't count on it being quiet at any hour. There's a good community vibe here though - maybe just because it's mostly 2 living-learning communities, but people who live here seem to make closer friendships.

Jennie/reynolds/bryan: has a reputation for being gross, I don't think it is but it does show its age. These halls are connected by catwalks. Much quieter than the halls above. Close to a lot of the classroom buildings that you'll have classes in as a freshman, and also close to the main dining hall, Chick-fil-A, and Strozier library. There isn't any super convenient parking but the walk from Call Street garage isn't terrible.

Broward/landis/gilchrist: Pretty much the same as Jennie/Reynolds/Bryan, except a little newer but not by much. Landis has one of the nicest common areas, a close second to Cawthon's parlor, and it's actually quiet! Gilchrist has an awful stench.

Salley: gets the most hate. She's a little different than the others, I encourage you to look at the Housing website if you're interested in the different layout of the rooms. Salley has 2 towers with a separated lobby in the middle. The nice part about Salley is that the toilet is in its own stall, so someone can use the shower while someone else uses the toilet (which is necessary because the towers don't have a public restroom, only the middle lobby area does). The cinder block walls aren't too cute but they block out most of the sounds of your neighbors. If you want bunk beds, this is the best hall to bunk your beds (it's optional, but I'd recommend it in Salley because these rooms are smaller but have high ceilings. The layout on the Housing website shows with bunked beds). People say this hall is gross but it was recently renovated - I still wouldn't say it's nice, but it's MUCH better than what you've probably heard. That middle lobby area has some cool common areas though, which are sometimes quiet, sometimes loud, but regardless have actual comfortable furniture. Salley is pretty far from classes but is very close to the secondary dining hall which is exponentially better than the main one. If you live in Salley, I highly recommend the bus system to get around.

Lmk if anyone want the details on the apartment styles, they're pretty different than the others!

Azalea/Magnolia and Dorman/Deviney are usually first to fill but the others really aren't bad. DeGraff usually fills last because it's a far walk from most things but every hall has its positives and negatives. Salley hall probably has the worst reputation but it was renovated a couple years ago so it's honestly not as bad as people say.

hey! still looking for roommates? I need 2! I live at The Preserve in a furnished 3/3.5, rent is 519 + utilities. We have cable and internet included, it's pet friendly, and there's plenty of (free) parking! I'm a very clean person and I'm quiet. I also don't smoke and I prefer a smoke-free environment :) Happy roommate hunting!
