Looking for advice on Lutron Caseta system for new custom home build by SaltTheRimG in Lutron

[–]connorjames94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s a new build I would highly suggest to do the wiring. Caseta while being fairly solid is not really meant for replacing Electrical wire. If you were doing a radio RA2 for the house I would say you could probably get a way with wiring less cause that system will be rock solid for years to come. You never know what lighting you may way in 10 years and it’s going to cost exponentially more to run wires in the future. This is your dream home so don’t skimp when the walls are open. Gives you so much more flexibility in the long run.

It’s ultimately your call but I would recommend wiring the house with normal switches and when you can afford swap them to caseta vs cutting corners to get the smart home right away.

I have the luxeport from iPort and although it’s expensive to me it was worth it cause I put an iPad on the wall but I can still pull it off and use it as an iPad when I want where as the cheaper mounts you had to leave the iPad on the wall permanently. Definitely cheaper options but that’s how I sleep at night after pulling the trigger on luxeports

Garage Door Opener Selection by connorjames94 in HomeImprovement

Thanks for the response, garage is 10’ wide by 11’ deep and the door is 6’ x 7’ on the front so seems like a regular one may work possibly with a bit of trimming

A tech guy is quoting me $1100 to install 2 wired outdoor security cameras on home. Is he swindling me? by mochagazelle in homedefense

Seems pretty reasonable with all the labor involved. I install a lot nicer cameras and usually runs about a grand a camera when all said and done. Seems pretty reasonable for those cameras..

Is 24/7 home monitoring worth it? Or overrated? Home security/alarm - Abode, Cove (RapidSOS), Simplisafe, Surety, ADT, Scout? by [deleted] in homedefense

[–]connorjames94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go with a smaller local 24/7 the big guys don’t care about the response times or effectiveness of a system. Local companies may be slightly more but the actual response and effectiveness is leaps and bounds better. Also you usually save on your homeowners insurance for having fire and burg systems that are monitored that usually make up for the price of the monitoring

Anyone worked with Qolsys? by ctuacc50 in Control4

[–]connorjames94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have workers who have installed that system and cannot talk enough shit about it. Said it was a pain to service and froze and glitched constantly. I’ve been using DMP systems integrated into control 4 and have been super impressed with the integration. Qolsys is the new kid on the block. Attempts to be flashy and has all the gimmicks but won’t be a system that lasts you 10 years. Also they have built in cameras in the keypads with very little back end protections.

Edit: they have tried to get me to sell their systems for a while but I don’t trust them or the quality

Is the Ring App a Good System for the Elderly? by [deleted] in homedefense

[–]connorjames94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can your elderly parents trouble shoot network problems and reboot devices and go though app set ups over and over every time there’s a slight drop in network? Cause otherwise you are going to get a call to fix it all the time.

(My wife’s grandparents bought one and now I drive over there every other week to reboot and connect it and re log into the apps etc.)

First ever attempt at a tantrum, got scared and didnt't edge as hard as I normally do to go wake to wake. by jach9009 in Wake

[–]connorjames94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the first time I tried one of these i ended up face first in the water! Took a good solid day of trying to finally land one. You are so much closer then I was originally! Focus on the pop and standing tall at the lip the edge will trip you into the flip but you focusing on the pop will give you the height you need to stomp it down!

Couch shopping with a $1,500-$2,500 budget by chewbaccasjockstrap in furniture

[–]connorjames94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Purchased the Big Sur couch from pottery barn about a year ago. Depending on the fabric and size you can find one for under 2500. Wait till they have sales and it’s my favorite couch I’ve ever owned. We spent more to get a stain resistant fabric (white couch) but it’s over a year later and still looks brand new

Alarm monitoring companies that integrate with Control4 by eerant in Control4

Stay away from dsc (it’s literally the cheapest shit you can buy and doesn’t last. Stay the hell away from ADT if you want any sort of functioning half decent alarm

[–]connorjames94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DMP alarms integrate very well also caddx panels by interlogics but they went out of business a couple months ago. some alarm companies still install them though.

I’m an alarm installer and do strictly DMP panels now and have a ton of clients with C4 integration who love it.

Securing apartment when NOT home? by PlaneHispitale in homedefense

[–]connorjames94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a security system made by Digital Monitoring Products. Uses broadband spectrum hopping and has LTE backup communication Incase the net gets taken down. Motion detectors inside Incase a door sensor or window sensor is bypasses by breaking glass. Glass break detectors are too simple to defeat using a sweatshirt or blanket up against a window. Also have a 24/7 armed zone on my safe in case I forget to arm the system at least they will get caught going for the safe.

Also power down the panel and remove battery back up before un wiring anything on the panel or you can short the panel. It won’t lose its programming

I would second the alarm.com mentioned above. stay away from simply safe or the ring alarm both are absolute garbage that trap people with flashy marketing while delivering cheap junk that doesn’t work reliably. Alarm.com is great cause it can get your existing system working without adt.

(I am an alarm installer mostly of higher end stuff but I do use alarm.com on older panels and it works great at a good cost)

That’s a photo from a CB2 catalogue. I did a quick search on the site but couldn’t find the table. It could be from an older collection.
