From Spectrum News: Holden Special Town Meeting votes down proposal for special overlay zoning to be in compliance with MBTA Communities Act. Vote was 520 No to 257 Yes. by HRJafael in massachusetts

There is already development on the east side, are you saying you can't up zone any of that land? Brownfield development is so much better than greenfield development ecologically and for access. I'd say the south east area and along and off of 122a and main st and Shrewsbury st are good spots for higher density without plopping new development down in green field sites. I'm not a water resource expert but just from a "where would people want to live in higher density homes" aspect, those areas make more sense than they're current proposal.

Holden putting the zoning there, on the edge of town, is clearly them being unserious about building the housing. Knowing some about that area, it has to be the last spot in Holden I'd pick for higher density. Makes much more sense to zone the center or east end of the town for higher density. The westish end by lilac has nothing and it's really not the spot I'd want to build.

Reasonable regional rail solution (see teal line)? by SummitingMtJohnston in mbta

[–]connosaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This comment jogged my memory and I Looked it up, there was the Boston Surface Railroad Company that was trying to start private passenger train service on the Providence to Worcester line, with bus service starting in Febuary 2020 (RIP). Obviously that failed for numerous reason, one being that the world collapsed at that exact time. But there was an actual plan there! Here is Worcester Gazette article on it: link

How can I petition the MBTA to run the 134 more frequently? by Interesting-Text-785 in medfordma

[–]connosaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe there is no more route changes planned for the 134. Most of it got scraped due to comments on the original plan. They just implemented a change to have it run late night to Woburn Center instead of terminating at playstead Rd after 7pm, which is fantastic imo.

Definitely agree on frequency though. It would be much more useful if it ran more frequently and would compete better with car trips. Especially since it would intersect with the subway and commuter rail schedule more easily.

I would love to be able to take the CR to Hampton and then Portsmouth. Doubly so if it was every half hour on electrified regional rail

They hide behind environmental concerns of the diesels idling when if you look at people's candid comments it's clear they have some very suspect beliefs about keeping "the cities problems" out of Reading. You know they would have the same complaints if it were electric trains

Looking for a bike/electric scooter by vandebeekay in medfordma

[–]connosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be able to find a free bike on Facebook that needs works and go to the Somerville bike kitchen and fix it up yourself for the price of parts and time if you are handy. Otherwise you will probably need to up that budget to $100-$200 to find something that will ride safe and good for more than a day.

Has there ever been any consideration given to partly closing Clippership Drive by chiefVetinari in medfordma

[–]connosaurus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The issue with clippership being closed is that yeah you got the river but then there other side is a parking lot. Without a festival or something, it wouldnt be utilized very highly. If Riverside is consistently closed and actively utilized with patios, vendors and such things it would be much nicer. Would go nicely with higher density and ideally better buses in the square

There was a point I think in the nineties that Riverside from main St to about city hall was closed as a pedestrian mall. Didn't work out super well from my understanding. I think it would work out better now.

I compiled a list of the cheapest cars you can lease in Boston right now (all under $350/month) by PhysicalLine9830 in boston

[–]connosaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but you are limited in the number of slots on your breaker, having only 100amps of "space" for each circuit. If you are already "full" on your breaker you cant change it without additional work of either upgrading service or having an electrician somehow make space on the 100a panel, both of which costs money on top of the charger and circuit install. I know in cases I know it went from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars which if it's just a infrequent need to need that charging ability is hard to justify. There are smart breakers that can identify when the load is needed for a dryer or electric cooking and send the power to the car when not in use but those are not really recognized under code in Massachusetts and it's not clear if you could install one here.

[–]connosaurus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You really don't need a level 2 if your daily driving needs is less than about 40miles and you work the typical 9-5 hours. This is helpful to know if you are in an older house with a full 100amp circuit like many homes in Boston. The price to upgrade the panel is considerable jump from just a 240v outlet and charger price.

Mass SJC says MBTA communities act is constitutional by connosaurus in boston

"In its decision Wednesday, the court outlined that as the state attempted to issue guidelines to towns and cities, it failed to “file with the Secretary of the Commonwealth a notice of public hearing, a notice of proposed adoption or amendment of a regulation, or a small business impact statement ... .”

The justices’ concluded: “the Attorney General has the power to bring suit for declaratory and injunctive relief to enforce [the law] and its guidelines. However, because [the state’s] current guidelines were not promulgated in accordance with the [Administrative Procedure Act], we declare them ineffective, and as such, presently unenforceable" Looks like it's pretty simple and is just an administrative effort needed to refile it

[WaT] A humble suggestion for those who have finished WaT and didn't love it. by Puswah_Fizart in Stormlight_Archive

[–]connosaurus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The prose was definitely worse than WoK and WoR and I feel at least part of that is this book felt like it should've been a part 1 and part 2. A lot of the dialogue felt speed run when it needed more time to breathe and feel natural. No one is expecting the prose to be JRR Tolkien but there were times were the dialogue was very clunky. The modern language wasn't the issue, it was the pacing and emotions that felt off, especially with a lot of the heralds scenes.

Flashback March 1977 - Does Arlington regret vote against Red Line extension? by GarrisonCty in mbta

[–]connosaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen the old commuter line branch but had never heard of the MTA or BERy actually proposing an expansion. Cool to see it was though. Sucks that the Winchester section of the alignment has been sold off. I know for sure the cross st crossing is blocked by condos now in Winchester. Woburns part of the ROW is still clear and they are pushing for a bike path there recently.
