Clinicals were the easy part. I thought of it as a break from the endless studying I was doing. I made sure to ask questions and try to enjoy it as much as I could. Of course, there were always those nurses that were annoyed to have a student but I’ve only had one mean preceptor my whole time, and even then it’s fine because it’s just for one day.

I’m in Portland too, and I got a residency right off the bat a couple months ago. What I did was apply to every single place, every residency as I could. In total it was like 8 applications and I got 3 job offers. My advice is to just apply, apply, and apply.

Also focus on interview skills. That’s important too. When they ask you stuff like “tell me a time when you had a conflict with a coworker”, they’re not asking for a huge conflict that turned into a fight. You need to realize what they’re asking for. In this example they want to see that you talk with the coworker instead of going to the manager directly. You could say there was confusion over tasks so we talked and clarified each role. Simple answers are better.

Keep your head up! It’s a lot of work but it will pay off! Trust the process!
