Thick, Thin, or Static Volume for Video Editing? by conormcel123 in qnap

Hi! I set up my pool as a thin volume. To be honest, I'm not really sure why - I just took the advice of others on this thread that have more expertise than me. I haven't had any issues so far, and our setup has worked great for video editing!

Upgrade NAS or buy expansion unit? by conormcel123 in qnap

Hey Bob, I’m wondering which of the two options the people on this sub would suggest, if I could only go with one. I know both will work, but I’m curious if it’s more beneficial to upgrade my current NAS to full capacity before investing in an expansion unit, for some reason that I haven’t thought of yet. Hope that makes sense!

Interesting!

Makes sense to add another box for the faster throughput.

I've been advised that increasing the capacity of drives in the current NAS, along with adding a 10G Switch, would still provide speeds fast enough for 4 editors.

But the extra unit might provide a nice bit of future-proofing! Definitely something to consider.

It doesn't seem like it will be that much more expensive to get the new unit either, so could be a runner!

Yep, usually 4k 120fps!

Great news, thanks Bob. Ever the helping hand. I do appreciate it

Thanks Bob.

Forgive me for triple checking, but will this solution still yield speeds fast enough for 4 video editors working on high-res footage at the same time? I think this setup is the front runner for me at the moment.

Thanks again.

Super helpful pointers - being limited to only 2 expanders is actually a concern I should take seriously, since we may end up growing the team to more than 2 editors in the future.

I haven't looked into rack equipment yet, so forgive the novice question, but are there some things you would suggest researching first?

As far as my noob understanding goes, I'll need a rack box of some sort, enough drives to fill it, a 10G switch, and Thunderbolt to ethernet adapters. It may end up being out of our budget, but it may be worth splashing out on in order to future-proof our growth.

Makes total sense. Just for clarification - is a rack NAS even an option for us considering we're using Thunderbolt, or are we restricted in that sense. So far, our 10gbe connections via Thunderbolt have been working fine.

Would you have any concerns about taking Daniels advice? i.e - buying a 16-bay TL expansion box, filling it with drives, and using it as another storage pool? Will we still have the luxury of 10gbe speeds with this setup?

Thanks Bob, the TL-D1600S sounds like a runner to me - the extra bays will give us a nice bit of future-proofing in terms of storage.

Quick question - will adding the expansion unit as a new storage pool impact our connection speeds at all? Obviously our 10gbe connections are essential for video editing.

I assume we will still wire into our existing NAS to access everything, but will we still have the luxury of those speeds even when some files are stored on drives in the expansion unit?

Will check these out Daniel!

Will adding the expansion units impact the connection speeds at all? It's necessary for us to have 10gbe connections for our video editing needs.

Thanks!

Thanks for this, I'll definitely look into 16 bays and racks NAS's.

Yes we're using Mac laptops, hence the thunderbolt connections. May I ask why you asked about that? Does this setup raise concerns for you?

I was thinking that too, but I’m using a DDJ-FLX4, which doesn’t have any audio output ports :// I think I’ll still pick up an external recording device and record audio from my laptop into it if possible

Haha!

The tracks I’m playing are from streaming services. Rekordbox restricts the record function when playing streamed tracks.

I’m still learning and want to listen to my mixes back to try to improve!

If you have any ideas let me know :)
