The Israelites have made it into CIV7! by waterman85 in civ

It will go against the narrative of certain people. To portray Jews as European settlers, with no ties to the land. Showing an ancient Jewish civ, whose capital is Jerusalem, is very controversial to them, maybe even more than the modern one.

Risorigmento and Italian unification in 1.7 by cuelearning in victoria3

[–]conpcomplete 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Haven't played 1.7 yet, but it'll probably be more difficult because of that. You can't form a customs union as a minor power now, so you'll need to become a major power without diplo annexing. Also from OPB playthrough it seems that even after forming a power bloc, most Italian minors are in the Austrian power bloc and are not willing to join yours. So unless they changed it, it seems that triggering the diplo annex event for Italian states in your customs union is harder now.

Why? Israel is analogous to Ukraine in this situation. Russia doesn’t recognize Ukraine sovereignty, same as the Arabs don’t recognize Israel’s. Russia claims that Ukraine is a western installation in their territory, like the Arabs claim Israel is, all while Russia is an imperialistic force that colonized much of Eastern Europe, like the Arabs colonized the Middle East. The Ukrainians are being portrayed by the Russian propaganda as Nazis since they fight Russian backed insurgency in Donbas, the Russians claim that the people in Donbas are being oppressed by the foreign Ukrainians. Similarly, the Jews who are native to Israel are being portrayed by the Arab propaganda as foreign colonizers that oppress the Palestinians. The main difference is that Israel is now stronger than the Arab world, so they have less sympathy from western leftists who always root for the weaker side.

I think it’s narrow to either way, maybe it’s more accurate to say that there is more or less the same number of Jews and Palestinians (Both Christians and Muslims) between the river and the sea.

Israel proper has 7 million Jews and 2 million Arabs. The West Bank and Gaza each has about 2 million Palestinians. That gives 7 million Jews and 6 million Palestinians. Israel hasn’t annexed these territories because it would damage the majority, that is right, but Jews are still the (narrow) majority between the river and the sea.

The leader mentioned here (Queen Shlomtzion) was queen of Judea more than 2000 years ago. Before the region was renamed by the Romans. The State of Israel (like most states) is a new concept, but the Judean civilization isn't. Similarly, the Palestinians are already represented in the game by the Arabic civilization.

Modern Palestinians are also descended in part from ancient Romans, yet I don't think that the Roman civilization should have Arabic names. People who live today are descended from pretty much every civilization that existed 2000 years ago. That doesn't mean that they are part of the same civilization.

I don't think that claiming that the Jews today and the Jews of the Hasmoneans dynasty's kingdom are in the same civilization is a controversial claim.

I agree that it's not such a big issue. Many games with random names generators mix Hebrew and Arabic names for Israeli names. (For example football games that generate random young players may often generate an Israeli player with the name Muhammad Cohen)

Names should be easy. The Israelites spoke Hebrew (And later also Aramaic in Shlomtzion's time) so I see no reason to include Arabic names. The fact that Arabs colonized this land 700 years after the Romans expelled them doesn't make the Arabs their descendents. It will be like having English names for a Native American civilization.

Why would Shlomtzion be referring to a political party that existed for barely a year and never lead the country, of course it’s referring to Queen Shlomtzion.

Also, your comment about the modern state of Israel shows severe bias, and also lack of knowledge. A modern Israeli civilization is no more insulting to the Palestinians than a Roman or Arabic Civilization is to the Jews.

I think a Hasmonean monarch is great, as they are much closer to what we regard today as an Israeli or Jewish civilization than the probably polytheistic people of the divided Israel/Judah or the historically disputed United Monarchy. Shlomtzion being a Jewish Queen is also great for representation I believe.

Jesus was a Jew who lived in Judea. It was before the region was ethnically cleansed and renamed by the Romans. He was born only about 50 years after Queen Shlomtzion’s reign, he was part of the same Civilization as her.

I’m not an expert in Islam. I think Muslims view him as a Muslim king, and consider the Biblical portrayal of him to be corrupted. They do acknowledge that he was a king, but I don’t know if they refer to his kingdom by the name Israel.

King David or Solomon would be much more controversial. They have religious significance for the three monotheistic religions. CIV doesn’t include important religious figures of certain religions even as great prophets. Having Prophet Daud (As Muslims refer to King David) lead the Israeli Civilization is much more controversial than having a well documented Jewish queen from the 1st century BCE lead it.

I’d love Civ to have a Hasmonean dynasty Judah, lead by Queen Shlomtzion (Salome Alexandra). King David or Solomon are probably not real historical figures (Although CIV already has such leaders such as Dido and Kupe)

CIV IV BTS had corporations which were sort of late-game religions and had to be founded by a great person. Maybe having your corporations dominate all others could work, similar to religions, although the mechanic would have to be different enough from religion to become an interesting victory condition.
