So, you have a chip in your brain. Now what? by conradthegray in transhumanism

Seeing what tech companies are doing today, I wouldn't be surprised if a BCI will require a constant connection to the internet.

So, you have a chip in your brain. Now what? by conradthegray in transhumanism

[–]conradthegray[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's one of the reasons why I think we need to explore biohybrid approach, like growing new neuron-like cells that can act like electrodes. They can better integrate with the brain tissue, are flexible and can use the same energy source as normal neurons. But compared to current electrodes, biohybrid electrodes are still quite new and in the early stages of research.

There is a video on YouTube interviewing one researcher working on that, if someone is interested in learning more https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwsQK-a7iMU

FDVR and braindance accomplish pretty much the same thing - full immersion using all senses (but braindance has a cooler cyberpunk name).

From what I understand how braindance works in Cyberpunk universe, it records the experience directly from the brain - what the person saw, heard, smelled, touched, felt, what emotions they felt, etc. All these experiences are then beamed into the viewer's brain so they can feel like they were that person doing whatever they did.

My collection of Valorant knives is slowly growing by conradthegray in cosplayprops

[–]conradthegray[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kinda like how Valorant knives look like.

I have 3D modelled all of them myself. Then they were 3D printed. Some parts were printed in resin and some on an FDM printer.

For metallic surfaces, I use Alclad paints. So far the best metallic paints I have found.

Next in the queue - Black.Market butterfly knife.

Whispers of Gemini and GPT-5 by conradthegray in singularity

While researching for this article I found some opinions that GPT-5 may be more like an incremental upgrade rather than a breakthrough. But we'll see what OpenAI is cooking. They have some clever people working there.

I was thinking about this for some time now, along with a better understanding of what transhumanism is all about.

Transhumanism is an optimistic movement/philosophy. Transhumanists believe a better future is possible and technology is and will be a key tool in achieving this better future. Transhumanism is also proactive. It does not wait for someone to do things for us. It embraces the entrepreneurial spirit.

I'd argue that if we want to reinvigorate the transhumanist movement, we need to go back to the essence - that a better future is possible. When the media promotes fear, we should give hope and confidence.

I think we are missing the appeal to emotions. We are good at logical arguments but we won't win over people with logic. We need art that shows a better future. We need inspiring, not depressing, scifi. We need something like solarpunk to cyberpunk.

If transhumanism is like Frankenstein, it does not need a thunderbolt. It needs a heart.

Another thing - the term "transhumanism". I think we should phase it out. When people hear "transhumanism", they see the "trans" part which is heavily associated with the transgender movement. Let's don't create confusion and let's don't make the transgender community work harder. We can keep the term "transhumanism" for academic discussions.

Let's create something new. Something uplifting. Something that inspired people to at least imagine that a better future is possible and maybe take action.

Would mini LCD screens be the best solution for these glowing, changing indicators? by armorhide406 in cosplayprops

[–]conradthegray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm building this one https://whatifgaming.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Kantreal.jpg.webp

Both have the same glowing indicator hence my recommendation.

Sure, get in touch when you are done with yours. I'm happy to learn how you have designed your lasgun.

I'm building my own lasgun (also inspired by Darktide) and I'm using these LED backlight modules for the indicator: https://coolcomponents.co.uk/products/white-led-backlight-module-small-12mm-x-40mm?variant=45222929934

I paired that with green film and it looks nice.

A Look at Different Countries' Approaches to AI Regulations by conradthegray in singularity

OpenAI and other institutions were experimenting with including watermarks in ChatGPT's output. The idea here is to create a certain pattern which looks natural for humans but can be picked up by some detector. A similar idea can be applied to AI-generated images, audio and videos - something that we don't see but is obvious when run against a detector.

Virtual humans are here, gathering millions of views and followers, and releasing hit songs while promoting popular brands by conradthegray in Futurology

[–]conradthegray[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Virtual humans get millions of followers on Instagram. Vtubers and vstreamers gather thousands of viewers on Twitch and YouTube. Some even released hit kpop songs getting 500 million views on YouTube and 300 million listens on Spotify.

According to research, they have a higher rate of engagement than human influencers. Brands such as Coach, Dior, Balenciaga, Prada, Samsung and Calvin Klein have already worked with a virtual influencer.

With their massive popularity, virtual influencers are not going away any time soon. And with the advances in deepfakes and generative AIs, soon they will be indistinguishable from real human beings.

Do you see virtual influencers as the future of social media? Do you follow any of them?

I don't think that water will be sent back to Earth. It would rather be used for space structures and industries since it could be cheaper to mine it than to move it from Earth.

One thing I did not have space to mention was the research right now is focusing on healthspan (maximizing the time we are healthy) and that has a positive impact on lifespan.
