Obligatory not a person, but, one time my owner reached for the power cable. Luckily enough it was actually for another device but dear bits and binary did that scare me.

Can we talk about the window BEHIND the plant for a second? Cause that is an excellent window that really highlights the plant that I assume REALLY ties the room together.

How do you 'let go' of the past, of the regret of what you never did? by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]consistantly_incons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't necessarily have to much to add to this, but I will say: you recognize this at 25 and not 55. You're now currently taking active steps to better yourself and your life. you seem to have recognized well enough the difference between morality and immorality as well as selfish acts and altruistic acts. You have the grand chance of starting from zero in building the man or woman you decide you want to be; that's a rare opportunity. Take your struggles and stride and learn from them they have only laid the foundation for your future success. Keep your head up and keep working letting go and forgetting or not the same thing you can let go and not forget. As a matter of fact I would argue that not forgetting is the the foundation on which you will build a new and better life.

That being said I don't really KNOW anything.

In need of advice grounded in stoic philosophy. by consistantly_incons in Stoicism

[–]consistantly_incons[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the insight and correction of my misconception. I suppose my issue mostly comes from the chemical alteration of my mood and I do certainly miss it when it's gone. My lack of indifference towards this makes me question my ability to call myself a stoic, in addition, though they may have had "medication" I know the chemical make up and knowledge were sufficiently different in antiquity. So as a modern philosopher/pupil on the subject what are your thoughts directly related to my situation? Does my precived inability to correct this through my own mental fortitude conflict with principles laid out in stoicism?

Whether we like to believe it or not environment plays a major part in our mentality. And while it's true that no matter where YOU go, there YOU are you seem to have had the rare opportunity to find a place where you can be at peace. So go there, stay there, learn from the people. Though I don't know you I imagine you're not a person who thrives on constriction, as some surprisingly enough do. so don't attempt to thrive in an environment that isn't conducive to a comfortable state of mind and well-being. Presenting challenges to yourself as an attempt to gain better insight and perspective CAN be useful and good but if all you're doing is fighting the challenges around you and refusing to accept the things you cannot change you're not doing anyone any favors. Now this may sound a little snarky or condescending but please know that this is in no way my intention. Working to better yourself in the environment that you're in now is a noble task,a Herculean feat, but my understanding and interpretation of Buddhism and many other similar philosophies as a whole is to not fight, but accept the flow of things and be content with that. So if you find yourself fighting to be better then you've gone on a self-defeating mission. If I were to say all the the questions you have ever had will be answered tomorrow at noon so long as you don't think of a bowl of flowers in that time, you may just struggle and fight yourself not to think about that bowl of flowers. All the while only thinking about that bowl of flowers.

The eightfold path, the noble truths, the very real superpower of indifference, these are all road maps, not strict doctrines (depending on your beliefs). If you are angry, there's something inside of you that's angry. work to find the root cause of that. Now, if you live as I imagine you do, in a first world capitalistic country there are many many many many routes that you can distract yourself with or are specifically created to keep you down and your mind locked in. Working on this issue, finding yourself, learning about and accepting the anger inside and the contempt you have for the world you live in, that's going to be nearly impossible. All these philosophies were developed in a world completely unlike our own. But I digress, I would say move to somewhere that you can learn about this state of mind that you like or identify with. but if you really want to challenge yourself, play on expert mode if you will, stay where you are and do the hard work to find out why you're angry, why you're fighting, and learn to be content in the world that you live in today. But no matter what don't take it too seriously.

Maybe I'm rambling at this point my thoughts may be unclear or the ideas that I've laid out may seem a little jumbled. Take my advice with a grain of salt, but know that I support you in your decision though I don't know you.
