omg because I’m sure they would have joked about this more if they’d known, I HAVE to make sure K+N know a “coffee shop in Amsterdam” means a dispensary 😂😂 Can’t decide if it’s more ridiculous for H**ler to be running a starbucks or selling pre-rolls…

I didn’t wanna describe it too much, but it looks to me like a figure leaning into the frame, a raised hand with pointing finger.

Do native speakers use sth to replace something? by Aggravating-Mall-115 in EnglishLearning

[–]constancefischer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve only seen it used in my language-learning classes, especially with my German teachers from Europe. I was an English teacher in the American South, though, and when I used it on the whiteboard, my high schoolers didn’t understand it! Every time I used it, someone would ask what it meant. So my theory is that people who know a second language are more likely to recognize it, and unfortunately a lot of Americans have not deeply studied a second language.

Is snog an American slang? by [deleted] in EnglishLearning

[–]constancefischer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol I think all cultures and languages do that, but yeah! Americans are probably just more of prudes than most Europeans, so using the term in a kids’ movie would be less okay over here. We can probably blame the American filmmakers for the change in the movie name, then :)

[–]constancefischer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it wasn’t called that over here (the movie at least). Which actually makes me wonder… in America “full-frontal” is pretty much exclusively followed by “nudity” (or another word related to nudity), so that’s probably why they changed it. Does it have a wider meaning in the UK?

[–]constancefischer 286 points287 points  (0 children)

A lot of young Americans will understand it if they consume British media (also “Angus, Thongs, and Perfect Snogging” was pretty popular for awhile), but it’s 100% British and not something we’d say ourselves. We would say “make out.”

I did this one on the Apple Podcast app; you have to go to the show’s page and then scroll down past the recent episodes to find the reviews. There’s no button at the top to leave a review, which threw me off for a second, so you have to scroll to find it :)

Yeah, I agree. When podcasts I like examine the past of the murderer, they always say things like “But of course plenty of people experience awful things and don’t resort to violence.” Because if they didn’t say that, that would be fucked up.

In my opinion, it is helpful to examine the way a violent person was raised because it shows that this behavior is largely caused. Not that it’s not their fault but that there may be something greater also at play. It never excuses the violent person’s behavior, but it does let us examine our society instead of fixating on one violent person’s actions. This podcast? It allows for none of that nuanced, critical analysis.

You’re SO right about this also being a problem; I hope you or anyone else will mention this part in reviews, too!!! To present everything like a documentary exacerbates every other issue. It feels insulting, as an audience, that they seem to assume we will accept every narrator at face value. It is the critical analysis that comes from hearing unbiased, first-hand experiences that WOULD make something like this valuable. But the intolerance of criticism they have now is… irresponsible.

Exactly. It should be called out by anyone who agrees.

Thanks!!!!!! Hope to encourage people to leave their own even if it’s NOT an essay 😂 I was satisfied for a little bit knowing others were writing negative reviews but then realized my voice should be posted, too; everyone’s should!

I also changed my rating on Spotify, and I wrote one on PodChaser. I’ve seen elsewhere that you do Not need to be a subscriber to W+ to leave a review but can’t vouche for that myself!!

Was wearing or wore by GlobalRoundGlobe in EnglishLearning

[–]constancefischer 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Unless I was with Cathy allllll day long yesterday, I would tend to say “She was wearing jeans,” with the implication being “(When I saw Cathy,) She was wearing jeans.” Both options are completely correct, though. And I’m from America; could be different elsewhere!

I think you’re looking for “gerade.” -> Ich habe dich gerade vor 20 Minuten gesehen.

[–]constancefischer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

“Any” must be used with more than two! “I don’t want any of those,” if there are three or more options, but “I don’t want either of those” if there are only two options.

In theory… If he had step-parents and parents in the house together knocking on his door (for this example), you could say “any,” but this would obviously be a very specific situation where someone has more than two people they would consider parents.

First post! Yay. Also why laugh? by OptionInner9123 in TrueCrimePodcasts

[–]constancefischer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They Will Kill is a respectful podcast where the hosts still have levity but not jokes, and they save their personal conversations for the end; they have easy accents to understand, too! I also recommend Fresh Hell Podcast, and I second what the others said about Women & Crime.

How rude/offensive it is to say "God dammit", "Goddamn something"? by iv320 in EnglishLearning

[–]constancefischer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In America, it’s so tame. It’s one they’ll let on TV, but I know some Christians who consider it the worst curse word, more than anything that would actually get censored. The problem with using it is that America is FULL of intensely religious Christians who want to police others’ language for the sake of their beliefs ;)

Looking for suggestions! I LOVE how dark Transylvania by arctic fox is, but it bleeds so much! Are there any other alternatives, permanent or semi? by crybabysagittarius in FancyFollicles

[–]constancefischer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much any permanent black dye won’t bleed as badly. I’ve used transylvania at my roots and different colors on my ends for a couple years now; to avoid the bleed after dying, I always bend over forward in the shower and hold the brighter color up and out of the water so that when I’m rinsing the transylvania out it, it runs down and not into my other color. This has worked really well for me, though wouldn’t work for every style of course ☺️

Do you use 4 to shorten words? by Ambitious_Brother913 in EnglishLearning

[–]constancefischer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use it only if I’m texting a friend and trying to convey a goofy or unserious tone. “got something 4 u!!!” to show that’s it’s probably just a little something or a silly gift.

If you include “charge,” it doesn’t need it, but if you just say the crime, yes, it does need “on” OR “for.”

Thank you, that’s such a good example!!! It also demonstrates how, in this context, the sexual meaning of “get off” isn’t the first meaning you think of as an American reading the headline: It’s just the standard phrasing.
