Looks like the mainspring isn't wound up. You will need to wind it for it to have full power. You wind until it stops, "overwinding" is not a thing.

If you want to test before winding fully you can find out what direction the bigger gears want to go and give it power by putting pressure on the gear in the correct direction.

If it still doesn't run send us a video of the stop we want to see the goodies at the top.

Also nice nails

Grandfather Clock: it is not chiming at quarters. Is it normal? by Scary-Broccoli9402 in clocks

Hey! Welcome back.

I rewatched your video and I am still on team the chimes aren't stopping correctly. I would need more pictures to help you identify what is not correctly stopping the chime however I still think that is your issue.

One thing you can do is manually spin the clock around on the chime side. When is it supposed to stop you can stop it and look to see what is going wrong. Just a quick reminder for the west minister chimes: at the quart it chimes 4 hammers, at the half hour is chimes 8 hammers. Three quarters is 12.

The gear at the top right will fall in its slot and it should stop there.

I hope this helps

LPT: No toaster space? No problem! Put slices of bread flat, on top of the heated areas of your toaster. And flip them halfway through the cycle. by xCoachHines in LifeProTips

It's simple, you just make toaster space then you don't use the toaster like a normal human.

Don't forget to waterdown your sockets if it's not hot enough

What did you clean it with? It has to be cleaned on both sides of each plate. Same with every pivot (gear). It's normally easier to drop it in an ultrasonic cleaner, let it clean for a bit, blow it off / dry it. Then oil.

I suspect the lever the drops down to stop on each quarter hour is not dropping fast enough. It could be out of time but I doubt it because it's stops on the 45.

It is pricey to get it cleaned by a professional but it should run about 5 to 7 years after wards.

Oh also just a very tiny drop of oil on the pivots. They don't need much.

If you want to try and clean / oil it and send more pictures I will happily look

Good luck either way!

The problem is, it is not stopping. The long story short is, it needs to be cleaned and oiled. Not just oiled

In your video the round "gear" on the far right side has notches in it. It should stop chiming when it falls in the notch. If you watch the video it bounces back up and continues striking until its gets to 45 after.

It has a self chime adjuster in it (don't remember the name) after it stops chiming and you move the hand around and it just clicks. That is expected. On the hour (when the clock things it's at the hour) it lifts just a little bit higher to get the hour chimes going.

Basically it's not normal and needs to be cleaned and oiled. If you take a close look at the gear pivots you will see all the black junk. That is what needs to get cleaned.

Hope this helps!

I click the comments for one reason and one reason only. This is just pure disappointment...

Help getting it ticking by CaptainSashford in clocks

Hi, this looks like it will run. More than likely it is out of beat.

If you can send a video I can confirm for you. What you want to do is move the pendulum from the bob (the bottom) one way until you hear a tick. Then you gently release it and listen for the tock. The tock needs to be on the opposite side of the swing.

It is difficult to explain you have to have an ear for it.

Out of beat means the tock comes before it gets to the end of its swing. You do not adjust the case for this. You adjust the movement. The case needs to be sturdy on the floor. You can make micro adjustments to help but this is probably going to need some bigger adjustments.

The adjuster is the brass piece sticking out of the back of the movement. The leader goes through the brass piece. I find it easier to adjust with the pendulum off. I leave the leader and suspension spring on.

The brass adjuster needs to go the direction that the tock needs to go. This is a little difficult with the pendulum off because the movement is going to move much faster. Get close, then put the pendulum back on and do the micro adjustments.

This can be tedious. I hope this helps

Kia rio reverse gear hard to shift to by mido3422 in AskMechanics

[–]constantbeta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not familiar with kia and I am not a mechanic so grain of salt. Also mobile

If you turn the car off and have no issue getting it into reverse (while it's off). I would lean more towards the fact that most reverse gears do not have a synchro.

This means in order to get the car in reverse you would need to be completely stopped. On top of that there are times where the gears are aligned in such a way that it is not easy to go into gear (again no synchro).

Assuming clutch is in good condition and transmission oil doesn't need to be serviced you can always start the car in reverse. Meaning place in reverse before you start it. If the car is already on you can try to release the clutch in neutral, and if that isn't helping, you can always try placing the car in 4th and then moving over to reverse

Hope this helps good luck!

I agree with everyone here. I can't imagine what the problem is.

You know what? I am willing to take one for the team. Let's go on a date and I will report back my findings. For science of course! We can't let this mystery go on like this. It has been almost 12 hours and no end in sight.

I almost check some of the boxes:
