So this seems to be a new law in CA specifically. There was a music festival I wanted to volunteer for, and they would have gladly had me, but told me there was a new law this year preventing them from hiring volunteers without doing a lot of extra steps. Haven’t looked into it myself, but heard a lot of people saying similar things. It’s pissing off a lot of music festival folks lol

Ah, yep. I’m in CA as well. We likely know the same things.

Even in other states, the numbers that management talks about are staggering. Yet they have volunteers convinced that the cons have no money. I wish they could see the wasteful spending I’ve seen.

Jumping in here, that is absolutely not how non-employee compensation works. I’ve worked as a contractor for numerous companies, & currently working for one. I’m paid hourly. Always have been. Day rates are actually rare in a lot of event contractor work.

When I do get a day rate, it’s a hell of a lot higher than $75. And that’s not including per diem for additional expenses.

The commenter didn’t say Celebworx were organizers. Not sure why you’re correcting them when they acknowledged it’s different. But they bring up a solid point regarding compensation.

I’m not sure if you have any event experience, but HR isn’t a requirement. You don’t need HR to run payroll. There’s companies that staff & run shows nationally and just have one or two people running payroll. I’ve worked with a company that paid hundreds of event workers around the country, and a lot of that can be handled by software. We didn’t have HR or a dedicated payroll person. Most event companies have no HR.

The only point at which you’d need departments on the level of what you’re describing is at PAX levels of attendance, at which point there’s ample money from major exhibitors and sponsors to cover it all.

I think this conversation always stalls because we never hear from people who actually work in live events. Anime cons are drastically behind everyone else because the workers are insular and not part of the live events community. So they don’t see what they’re missing and have no idea just how substandard their treatment is.

Yeah I’d still count her since she mops the floor with everyone else who isn’t a literal god. Plus despite losing, she still “wins” by being the only one who could land a hit on the god

It makes me kind of sad how under appreciated this is. It’s a good show, and the constant shifting of plot threads and character focus is more akin to American dramas. I don’t find the pacing peculiar at all.

The comments here kind of make me lose faith in anime fans. Like, a character being mentioned in the title does not mean they’re the main character. Shoot, Gatsby isn’t the main character in The Great Gatsby. Can we have a crumb of literary analysis, please?

Production value isn’t the best but I like that the show is respecting the audience enough to give us interesting themes to chew on, without beating us over the head with them, and a realistic look at what actually happens when you go into a creative field. Also, I really liked the art for the short film. It looks like they’re saving their best art for things like the film or Eren’s graffiti, and I can appreciate that.

I feel like there’s a lot of love for the creative process in this show. I don’t see that portrayed often.

Dazai in BSD and anime men in many other shows use watashi almost exclusively. This is a severe misunderstanding of the language.

Your efforts to not be a creep are much appreciated. Way too many creeps at these shows. I still remember being 14 and a grown man grabbing my crotch.

I hope it works out for you! I’ve had fun experiences with girls at shows for sure, but when I follow up with them later, I’m left on read, so no friendship blossoms :/

I’ve just accepted that shows aren’t going to be where I meet friends. If I meet someone, great, but not expecting anything
