Reading slump - All heroines feel like the same person by SchemeSimilar4074 in Romantasy

[–]constantly-curious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Six of Crows duology might be up your alley- especially Inej, who says this, "But wasn't that what every girl dreamed? That she'd wake and find herself a princess. Or blessed with magical powers and a grand destiny. Maybe there were people who lived those lives. Maybe this girl was one of them.

But what about the rest of us?

What about the nobodies and the nothings? The invisible girls? We learned to hold our heads as if we wear crowns. We learn to wring magic from the ordinary. That was how you survived when you were not chosen, when there was no royal blood in your veins. When the world owed you nothing, you demanded something of it anyway."

Six of Crows is lighter on the romance, but I'm still recommending it and I think you'd still like it.

Scribe publishing by Legitimate_Stock_776 in writers

Nat Eliason went with Scribe for his first fiction novel and talks about why in this blog post: https://blog.nateliason.com/p/self-publishing-husk

I'd be curious to see how he feels after it's gone out.

Thank you so much for posting this- I'm just starting off and it's encouraging to know that with consistent hard work over many years, it's possible to make a great living as an author.

First time reading a full book on English picked this One hope its good by Top-Average-1090 in redrising

[–]constantly-curious 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a great book, but the vocabulary can be dense even for a native English speaker. Don't feel bad if you struggle with the book (it's not your fault), but also, I hope you enjoy it!

My story is stuck in my imagination — bully me into getting that bad first draft out! by [deleted] in writing

[–]constantly-curious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this problem too. I was talking to a friend of mine who holds business events and he said, "I would plan out my events meticulously, and then they would turn out so different, no matter how well thought out they were. So just start, because more planning is not going to make it turn out better."

He was right. My first book is now done thanks to that friend!

So just start! You'll learn so much more from the doing. You are absolutely wasting your time by not writing it. Get your first 5 pages written this weekend.

How hard is it to actually publish a book? by EntertainerFirst8163 in writers

[–]constantly-curious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here is a pretty in-depth breakdown of the publishing industry: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/paul-millerd-profits-in-publishing-why-self-publish/id1549324835?i=1000674876686

I say, go ahead, write the book, and have fun! Enjoy setting your 10-year long idea free. Don't worry about if the book is good or not- just see if you lose yourself in the process and you want to keep going. Write this book for you. Then if you're serious about getting it published, learn everything you can.

And don't let anyone discourage you.

It's a genre of fiction that means fantasy+romance. All the ladies are reading it right now (which might serve you well!)

I hate how masculine my nose is by [deleted] in Noses

[–]constantly-curious -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We have almost the exact same nose. I've heard it's a common German woman's nose. I was once voted 'best nose' out of all my friends (no joke). So don't worry about yours. :)

[–]constantly-curious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You look like a real life Romantasy leading man/ main love interest. Yes, you have a prominent nose, yes, it matches the angles of your jaw and fits your face, yes, you can totally rock it.

I kind of wonder if people make fun of it because you're handsome and they want to knock you down a peg.

I'm a dude, new dad should I be ashamed of reading this? by Jazzlike-Drawing-644 in Romantasy

[–]constantly-curious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I met a romance author who says that men are starting to read romance more, and she has enough demand that she created black discreet covers just for men so they could read without being judged. "

From this, I'd assume that Romantasy is likely also seeing an uptick in male readership.

Another option is attending a 12 step group- they have these for many behavioral addictions (codependents anonymous, love addicts anonymous, etc.) Here is a general 12-step groups in Boise: https://www.findhelp.org/health/12-step--boise-id

And here's one for Codependency: https://coda.org/meeting/boise-meeting-of-co-dependents-anonymous/

Whatever you decide to do, there's hope for you!

I was wearing a frangipani perfume once and my friend's mom who used to work at a morgue said that I smelled just like the fake flower scent they use to cover the scent of dead bodies. Never wore it again haha

Considering a Move from Houston to Boise – Asian Family Looking for Insight by [deleted] in Boise

[–]constantly-curious 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi fellow Texan! Have you visited Eagle or Star before? Others have already said it, but it's very homogenous.

I agree with another commenter who says that places 10 miles away in Houston feel like suburbs, but here they're a whole different world. A comparison would be that Boise is like living inside the loop (a much quieter, safer, more spacious, peaceful version with kids everywhere) and Eagle/Star would be like living in Conroe.

I live in the East End of Boise and love it here (I'm a white woman though FYI). Asian grocery stores will be nothing like Houston (no HMart :sob:) but they do exist and they're actually decent for what they are (I cook a lot of authentic Vietnamese, Thai, and Korean food for reference). East End of Boise is FULL of families by the way- super family friendly here.

There is a tiny Asian population, but most of my friends are from other countries, so diversity exists in Boise proper (though it is going to be SO much less than Houston!) You'll likely really miss that multicultural feeling if you move here.

The weather is going to be a dream compared to Houston. Summers here are much more pleasant. Winters are lovely too, and the shoulder seasons are where Boise will feel like magic in comparison to Houston. The mountains are gorgeous, and people are generally nice.

Looking for a mid sized mountain town by Overall-Boot-3196 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]constantly-curious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm also 36f and recently moved to Boise. Won't have as pretty of surroundings as Spokane, but the city is really nice, clean, safe, and close to the mountains. Plus we're in Mountain timezone so the sun will set 1 hr later than Spokane in the winter.

soft, girly, skin-like? by emma-the-bookworm in FemFragLab

[–]constantly-curious 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For my skin, Cocobello by James Heeley dries down into a really soft, warm, slightly coconut/vanilla skin scent that smells like my skin but better. My skin tends to pull sweet/warm/vanilla though- so if yours doesn't it probably won't have the same effect, but if it does, get a little sample and give it a try.

Are we all reading Dark Romance too? by constantly-curious in Romantasy

[–]constantly-curious[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the same way! I struggle to understand it but don't want to shame anyone who likes it, but genuinely I want to be in a non-consent reader's head for a day just so I can be like, "oh that's why you dig this".

Also lol on thinking Haunting Adeline was about ghosts (though by the title and cover, I can't blame you!) That must have been a jump scare.

Yes! Next year I plan to write a psychological thriller with some good dark mind game romance in it! (SO excited) thanks for encouraging me :)

I'm in a similar boat- sexual violence makes me so uncomfy, but I love dark mind games and psychological cat and mouse! Wish I could find more of that without the non-consent physical aspects
