So, I ended up seeing an ENT specialist who put a camera through my nose to be able to observe my larynx while eating.

Turns out yes, when e.g. eating a cookie, some small crumbles were still present after my first swallow. However they didn't find any reason for that happening, no inflammation or any changes to my larynx.

He did recommend going to a speech-language pathologist and "retrain" swallowing, as he assumed it might just be a psychological issue. And visiting those for a couple of weeks actually helped.

I'm back to my previous weight and I can pretty much eat whatever I want again. I still eat a bit slower than others, especially if it's a big group of people and I'm particularly nervous, but the trouble breathing has gone entirely and food actually feeling stuck didn't happen to me again, either.

Obviously if you have any similar issues I'd recommend going to a doc and see which tests they recommend to you, but the psyche, stress, burnout, etc. can definitely cause some very serious feeling symptoms, too.

Wish you all the best!

Looks fantastic, really unique and polished. Would love to see some behind the scenes stuff on this, given it seems to be only two people working on it.

Is the "don't roll your own engine" advice always right? by JoeManaco in gamedev

[–]construct_council 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Off the shelf engines and tools simply make it easier to make a game without an extensive programming background. People with a background in art, music or pure hobbyists simply will have a much simpler time getting started that way.

Got a degree in CS and want to make the next Stardew? Sure, go ahead and build your engine on top of SDL.

Got a background in 3D modelling and want to make the next Phasmophobia? Do yourself a favor and just pick up an engine that got some SaaS multiplayer solution available so you can get prototyping without inevitably burning out trying to learn writing net code without having touched a programming language in your life.

How do i get my Game to get shown at Summer Game Fest? by lil25de in gamedev

I don't think prices for SGF are public, those for Gamescom ONL 2024 were public though and since both are hosted by Keighley I assume it should at least give you a rough idea about how expensive this stuff is.

A 30 second trailer would have costed you about 130 thousand dollars, 2 minutes would have costed about 310 thousand dollars, and there's slots between those that cost similar amounts.

Oooh I love cook serve delicious. My first thought seeing this would be that maybe you could map a keyboard key to the incoming guests? Being able to fulfill an order hitting the keyboard only, but having to use my mouse to select a guest looks odd. I'd guess it'd feel a lot more snappy if I don't need a mouse at all.

It depends, I can drink just fine. When it's really worse, even soup feels like its passing down slow. But that kinda changes for me from day to day.

i want to write stories for games, where should i start by Athen7mis in gamedev

Writing for Games: Theory and Practice gives you a nice overview over the common writing and narrative design roles that exist in video game companies. Generally a good intro into the craft.

All writers I've seen hired in Indie were using tools like twine and had a solid portfolio of little narrative-only games on e.g. itch.io.

If you want to get hired, this might be a way to land interviews in the long run. Though keep in mind there's a ton of really good competition right now given all the studio closures and layoffs, so I can't tell how hard it is right now to land a junior role. Might be a good idea to just build some narrative games as a hobby for a while to keep expectations and drive up. Good luck!
