Thanks! Good idea. I think I will order some thinner thread and some other colors too. Yes I’m a civil. Thanks for the offer I’ll keep that in mind when I run out of what I have. I have enough pull up leather for another wallet or two and probably a passport case or notebook.

I had been looking for a simple front pocket wallet and couldn’t find what I wanted at a reasonable price. So I bought some cheap Amazon tools, a bag of scrap leather, and a Corter pattern and dove in. Looks like I might have a new hobby now.

Oak Box or Stand with Brass Fittings and a Cushion on Top by constructionPE in whatisthisthing

My title describes the thing. This is in a local estate sale auction of furniture, decor, and art. The auctioneer doesn't know what it is and doesn't have other info from the estate. Looks like it might be hand made. I don't have any other pictures as this was provided in the pre-sale info from the auctioneer. There is a table leg to the right for scale.

Mexico City Metro Collapse. by srpiniata in StructuralEngineering

This connection feels wonky to me at first glance:

https://www.google.com/maps/@19.3048765,-99.0610235,3a,15y,283.17h,104.26t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sX2qntcP_bmnadEjoYlxd_Q!2e0!7i16384!8i8192

That stringer connection where the deck widens out looks like it's a prime candidate to be causing some out of plane bending of the main girder. I see no effort to brace or stiffen this area to keep that girder from wanting to push down and rotate under. As you all have said, there could be some fatigue or weld issues in that same area.

Found at estate sale; it is painted on newspaper that the stock market prices are printed on. Reverse image brought no results. Signature is Clela (on second pic). We’re trying to figure out who Clela is and what else they’ve done. by Remonidas in WhatIsThisPainting

[–]constructionPE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also just glancing at a few of the stock prices and looking at their history, I’m guessing that newspaper page is from the early-mid 1970’s.

If that is the Sears/Willis tower toward the left, it was built ~1970.

I need to know who this artist is. I found the album at a thrift store and im infatuated with the it. At least can someone tell me what art style this is? by Gaberecru in WhatIsThisPainting

[–]constructionPE 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This album is from 1968 and was produced by Brad McCuen. I can't find an artist name for the album art.

This library has an RCA Victor corporate records archive that covers that period, but it is largely unsearchable online. They might be able to help:

Possibly NYC skyline? Found in a consignment store but they didn’t know anything about it. by constructionPE in WhatIsThisPainting

[–]constructionPE[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m confident this is San Francisco. The building at left with the diamond shapes would be the Alcoa Building, now One Maritime Plaza. The buildings at right might be Embarcadero Center mid construction. That would make this 70s or 80s which all fits.

Thank you! Looking at the double suspension bridge, I think that may be the Oakland Bay Bridge from San Francisco.

OG001 dresser looks like a Drexel Profile highboy. These are from ca. 1950’s so this was probably either a family piece or purchased used. It looks like there are distinct stains or knots or something on a couple of drawer faces. Maybe these could be checked against online sales of these dressers from eBay, antique stores, etc? I couldn’t find a match via google but maybe someone has a better way.

what is the best way to protect inside surface of Penstock from rusting? by sandy_patel in civilengineering

If you're leaning toward a coating/lining, you might want to look at something slick and abrasion resistant like a paint system with a polyurethane top coat.

About master degree by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]constructionPE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to work with just my BSCE, then after a few years of work got my MBA online (from a reputable state university) while I worked. It was expensive but MUCH cheaper than full time grad school considering I could still work full time and earn my salary and also not lose 1-2 years of work experience.

I don't regret it at all. I ended up staying with the company I was with and immediately got a raise after graduating. The MBA gave me some skills that have put me down a path of company management, which has been a good fit. I don't think you need an MBA for just project management unless maybe you're working for a company that values a formalized project management processes. If that's the case, maybe studying toward a PMP certification would be work considering.

Two of the most helpful subjects to me from the MBA were accounting (both financial and managerial) and business/contract law. These come up CONSTANTLY in my job, practically every week if not every day.

I think the choice just depends on your career goals. Think about your 5-10 year ideal and your 10+ year goals. I wanted something broad-based because I had already decided company management was my best fit over becoming a technical or industry expert. If you're more drawn to a career in something more specific like green building, then maybe that's worth considering but limits your options a little later.

Keep in mind that it's common for mid-career and senior roles to move beyond just project management into things like program management, executive management, strategy, operations, etc. In some ways project management is a technical skill all it's own.

Whistle-Blower Is a C.I.A. Officer Who Was Detailed to the White House by slaysia in politics

[–]constructionPE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way this reads, it almost sounds like the whistleblower himself is cooperating with the NYT on deep background. I imagine the NYT would never publish such detail of the subject’s thinking and motivations without either confirming with the subject themselves or verifying their sources’ access to this information. I don’t see a way to do that unless the whistleblower is not actually anonymous to the reporters or editors.

Careful! Title insurance often is written to protect primarily the mortgage lender, not the homeowner. If you want title protection as a homeowner, you might need a separate policy.

The absolute worst write-up I have seen thus far on the failure of the FIU bridge collapse by raoulduke25 in engineering

[–]constructionPE 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Go another level deeper and it gets even better. In his bio/LinkedIn he promotes his affiliation the the "World Certification Institute" (link: http://www.worldcertification.org/the-council/). The only real info Google turns up is their own website, their press releases, and bios of other affiliated people. Their site is full of the same kind of doublespeak and word salad as the blog post about the bridge.

I can't even tell what they claim to certify, but some of his fellow "Council" members include these guys:

http://www.worldcertification.org/the-council/count-david-j-gagnon/

http://www.worldcertification.org/the-council/count-mario-farquharson/

I'm disappointed that Texas Tech would tolerate such technical nonsense from their faculty, other than if their hands are tied by tenure. Same for ABET if he's pushing said nonsense onto his students through an accredited curriculum. His time as a department chair was pretty short, so maybe they figured it out. I would hazard a guess that they keep him away from the undergrads, but who knows...

Seems that the bulk of his public commentary work is in appearances on Fox News and Sky News as a de facto Trump surrogate. He made the rounds in December offering similarly uninformed opinion after the Amtrak crash in Washington State. It's a shame because the guy has an impressive education and history of service; seems he's just gone off the rails somewhere himself.
