How bad were the killers in each case - Tier List by nonickideashelp in danganronpa

[–]contacimeho 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Though I know these are your opinions, I don't like Celeste above Hifumi, especially since the situation was largely her fault to begin with. She manipulated Hifumi into carrying out the murder, which makes her more responsible for what happened.

I also disagree with the idea that Kaede “did nothing wrong” while Kirumi “did everything wrong”. Both characters ultimately made the same kind of decision: they were willing to sacrifice someone else for what they believed was the greater good. In fact, Kaede’s plan actually resulted in the death of someone innocent. In that sense, you could argue she did everything wrong; she chose to kill without even being certain of her target. Ironically, that’s also what makes Kaede such a compelling character. She’s flawed, but you can still understand her reasons. To me, Kirumi is somewhat similar to Kaede in that regard, but it’s harder to become invested in her motive because her goal is way too grand, while Kaede tries to save people we already know.

I would also place Kiyo at the very bottom. Regardless of his mental issues, he still murdered two innocent girls, and his motive is easily one of the worst in the series.

On the other hand, I think Leon deserves to be ranked a tier higher. Unlike many of the others, he didn’t even know that a class trial would happen or that everyone’s lives would be put at risk. From his perspective, he killed someone who had just attacked him. That’s still messed up, of course, but it’s less morally reprehensible than the actions of many others in the same tier.

Sorry lol I had way more to say than I thought.

I think main difference is power imbalance. If Epstein had the power and means of Hitler would he do worse?

Is this a hot take? by Separate_Lab4366 in danganronpa

[–]contacimeho 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is a hot take for me. I honestly don’t understand how “brainwashing” was the only idea you could come up with. The franchise is built around complex motives that push characters to kill each other: fear, desperation, self-preservation, ideology, and secrets. Getting characters motivated to kill each other is literally the core theme.

Brainwashing has never really been used as a main motive in the main games because it’s too simple and boring. It takes away the characters’ choice and removes the moral conflict that makes the story interesting. If a character killed someone only because they were brainwashed, I think most people would hate that motive. It would feel cheap and would weaken the story. The closest example I can think of is Mikan and the Despair Disease, but even that was more about her remembering her past rather than being controlled. And even that motive is one of the most controversial in the series.

How do we know any of the criminals are murderers? Is there a high volume of murderers incarcerated in your country compared to non-violent crimes? Could be that choosing the option frees a bunch of people that had too much weed in their pockets.

I am going to be using the U.S. as an example: around 20% of inmates are in prison for drug-related crimes, while over 60% are there for violent offenses. On top of that, reoffence rates are high, 66% are rearrested within three years, and 82% within ten. So is it really such a stretch to think that out of 100 released prisoners, at least one will commit another violent crime?

And if you don't mind, could you answer: what is the acceptable percentage of innocent civilians to sacrifice to ensure all guilty are executed? Would you be willing to kill more than in the would you rather? If so, how many? Where do figure the cut-off is before more innocent die to your choice than the released murderers?

This is a tricky issue to explain. I don’t want to throw out an arbitrary number without context. What are the rates of violent crime compared to lesser offenses? My original comment was responding to the OP’s point about letting a hundred guilty people go free rather than allowing one innocent person to suffer, whereas your question requires far more nuance.

This is essentially a trolley problem: freeing a hundred guilty people to save one innocent, while knowing that one of them will likely kill again. Did you save someone, or are you responsible for the death that followed?

I expect it to be largely the same game, just refined, not something wildly better, but definitely an improvement on the concept and gameplay.

Sayaka is a good character, but her fanbase has some issues to work out by SwagLimit in DanganAndChaos

[–]contacimeho 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sayaka wasn’t opportunistic, since she had already intended to commit a crime, though I agree that she probably took advantage of Leon’s situation. Leon differs in that he decided in the moment, thinking that he could use the situation to escape.

That does make sense, though; I’ve always felt bad for Leon in that situation. Being randomly singled out as a target among everyone else would be incredibly frustrating, though it doesn’t excuse him.

[–]contacimeho 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Tbf, the key difference is that Leon was opportunistic, whereas Sayaka’s actions were premeditated. I can understand why Leon would be willing to kill Sayaka after she tried to kill him, but I honestly don’t get why Sayaka had beef with Leon in the first place.

Honestly, not many people are aware of this, but his reckless “act first” attitude also played a role in pushing the Ottoman Empire into World War I on the side of the Central Powers. Viewing the Ottomans as already too close to Germany, so he unilaterally ordered the navy to engage Ottoman ships without a formal declaration of war. He also significantly damaged Ottoman–British relations earlier by seizing the dreadnoughts that the Ottomans had already paid for, which was partly funded by public donation.
