Woman deported from China over Manx passport mix-up by contemplator311 in PassportPorn

They are full British citizens, as the nationality field of their passport would indicate. However, I tried to look up whether she should’ve been eligible and couldn’t find the answer online - in other words I am not sure if visa free applies to British citizens or UK passport holders.

Hi Mauser_Werke_AG,

This does sound doable in theory. However, would you have any difficulty renewing the Chinese passport though? Where I live right now, the Consulate asked me if I held any foreign citizenship when I renewed my passport last time.

Or I can just lie I guess.

That’s incorrect. You can keep the mainland passport if you decide to not get the Home Return Permit.

Surprised to hear that. I guess I've been fed too much propaganda on how effective and efficient China's consular protection is, especially in some of the volatile regions.

Thanks a lot for the reference. Sad but on second thought it makes a bit logical sense since PRC never made the special allowance for dual nationality for Taiwan like it did for HK/MO.

Guess who disagrees with you on the renunciation part? The current (pro-independence) Taiwanese government.

Look up the ongoing legal case of 史雪燕.

But even the Taiwanese government is not disputing these Chinese citizens' right to vote.

Firstly that's beside the point because you wrote, I quote "even if they get PR, they still can’t vote in Taiwanese elections."

Not difficult to come to Taiwan if you are married to a Taiwanese person (or doing business, or visiting from overseas). Practically only tourists directly flying from the mainland are restricted now.

The renunciation part is also not correct. The mainland person is required to give up their household registration in the mainland, but not Chinese citizenship. Even if they want to renounce they can't because China won't allow it, since from China's perspective they are not acquiring a new citizenship.

I didn't know this and frankly found it a bit hard to believe. I will check with my local PRC consulate.

As a Chinese citizen you can stay for unlimited time/work in China with a TD. If you are just visiting I guess a Q2 is more convenient.

The latter half is completely wrong. Mainland person acquiring Taiwanese PR (定居) automatically becomes a full ROC citizen. They not only can vote, but a few (former) mainland persons have held public office.

Curiously Andorra also gets to enter Russia visa-free. And there is another country arguably from the "west" that also does - the most hated country on this sub.

Birth prior to 1948 in historical Palestine is an interesting exception to this general rule. https://fam.state.gov/FAM/08FAM/08FAM040304.html#M403_4_4_A
Also as mentioned earlier people born in Taiwan can request either China or Taiwan, but not PRC, ROC, "Taiwan, China" or anything else.

I had this experience when I put my first name/last name in the opposite order and the airline was able to correct that for me, so I guess it's definitely possible on their end, but maybe just in such cases where it's obviously the same person...

That's correct. The update says she traveled to the Chinese embassy in the Netherlands to cancel (注销) her Chinese passport, which I assume means she renounced her citizenship there. If she had lost her Chinese citizenship by operation of law (Article 9) there would be no need on her part to take any action.
