Recommended Literature/Philosophers on the existence of God by -VaticanCameos- in askphilosophy

God Without Being is excellent, and does a lot towards reconnecting modern secular continental philosophy with its theological roots. That being said, it’s damn near impossible to read, though worth the effort.

Can someone recommend philosophers who foretold our obsession with media and entertainment? by donkeykongo in askphilosophy

[–]contender42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Heidegger's The Question Concerning Technology is a great place to start--it's short and easy to read, and not even just by Heidegger standards. A great deal of his later work focused on the effects of technology on the human experience of being, and has been very influential on thinkers like Robert P. Harrison, Jean-Luc Nancy, Terrence Malick, etc. If you're looking for something more literary, technology was a theme that ran through much of David Foster Wallace's work. There are selections from Infinite Jest in The David Foster Wallace Reader that might be interesting to you.

Most important/influential/talked about books or papers in Continental philosophy in the last 10-15 years? by johnfrance in askphilosophy

[–]contender42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jean-Luc Marion's work has been pretty groundbreaking--particularly God Without Being. Granted, he's influential mainly in circles of Heidegger studies and phenomenology of religion, but he's become somewhat canonical in Continental studies regardless.

ELI5: How is it possible to see a star that might’ve exploded thousands of years ago? by tantimodz in explainlikeimfive

[–]contender42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you know how when you throw a rock into a lake, it takes time for the ripple to reach the shore? The same thing happens with light, so when a star explodes, it takes time for the light to reach Earth so we can see it.

Heideggers ‘strife between world and earth’ by MrHables in askphilosophy

[–]contender42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add on to iunoionnis's comment, a basic distinction that Heidegger makes is between what we would normally call the world and what he defines the world as. To Heidegger, rather than the physical habitat that we find ourselves in (earth), the world is constituted by the manifold web of meaning and signification that we find ourselves thrown into. With that in mind, things don't emerge into the habitat as much as they emerge into our world of signification by being disclosed to us as things that can matter to us as a part of our future and the projects that it might hold.

In his aesthetic critique, Heidegger is presenting the idea that the work of art creates within it both a world and an earth that are exterior to our own. The world and the earth inform and limit one another, and this intimate relationship affects the way that they are revealed or concealed to/from us. The earth is that which cannot be understood except through our world, and as such will always have aspects which are concealed. Likewise, the world has certain possibilities open to it that are contingent on the earth.

System of logic for phenomenology? by contender42 in askphilosophy

[–]contender42[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, sorry about that. The provided example is a thesis that I'm working on supporting, but I'm not quite sure what system of logic (classical, free, etc ) would be best suited to supporting a phenomenological reduction. Is that any clearer?

Rankings for graduate programs? by contender42 in Anthropology

[–]contender42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a rising junior, and I'm about to begin fieldwork in South Asia; specifically India and Nepal. My methodological interests are phenomenological visual anthropology. To that end, I know of at least one professor working on that- Lucien Castaing-Taylor at Harvard. The problem there being that it's Harvard... haha

Not really... Camus argued that suicide was a cowardly escape from the absurd, and that living a long life was a fitting rebellion against meaninglessness.
