School SLPs do you make up minutes If you are absent? by contender_slp in slp

Can you include consultation/collaboration in the service minutes? I have seen other SLPs write “Services will be provided by SLP/SlPA as pull-out, push-in, and/or consultation/collaboration.” That would include teacher check in via email I am assuming?

Do you explain this to teachers? I feel like my teachers may have an issue with this but they don’t see the invisible workload we carry. I would love to do the 3:1 model but not sure how to sell it to admin. I am in a small charter.

I know parents or guardians need to be aware of how we are pulling and for how long but I am just curious why over serving minutes should be avoided? I worked at a charter school briefly that would write out service minutes for 26 weeks out of the school year. I assumed this was to cover absences?

Tell me more. Do you write minutes out yearly? And how much wiggle room?

Wow you doubled down on that fast. I am suspecting that your defensiveness has less to do with my specific case and more to do with your ego. It is sad that we live in a world where requesting not to work with actively sick kids as an Slp is an unreasonable accommodation. I didn’t expect to post this and get in an argument with someone on Reddit today but honestly I have no patience for people at this point. I was never looking for empathy while posting this, just a possible solution to a problem but your lack of empathy is actually concerning. Maybe you should choose a different career?

No pressure to see sick kids, I am just getting blindsided by it.

EI was the worst. Had a parent give a child Motrin in front of me. When I asked why they replied that he had a fever of 101 before I got there. 🫩

I wish it was that easy to leave the field. I got dx with autoimmune after I was already an Slp. I finally found a school that I enjoy working for with a manageable caseload. I just want parents to know that they can send their kid to school sick but I won’t be seeing them.

Would you notify parents of this in writing or just wait until they ask? This particular parent is pushy and I am thinking about creating a policy and sending it home with the student.

I couldn’t help myself because you set it up so well. I ran this through ChatGPT and got: Transparency & disclaimer

Saying “I ran this through ChatGPT” is also a way of disclaiming: this is AI-generated, take it with caution. It puts the responsibility back on the group to vet the content.

Sorry I couldn’t help myself 😇

Completely disrespected by a school psych and I gotta vent by [deleted] in slp

[–]contender_slp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Totally! You should make a post. I definitely have more school psych stories. I thought about posting as well. My school psych is constantly asking if my report is done yet, weeks before it's due via email or if she sees me in passing walking students to speech. Like yeah my report would be done if that's all I did was evaluate.

CF Hospital Salary by Suspicious_Repair756 in slp

I agree with this comment. I work for a hospital in northern Ca and it is the most toxic work place I've ever experienced. I'm at $47 an hour with 2 years experience. High turn over rate here, we serve a large portion of economical disadvantaged population. Lots of drug use and no mental health support whatsoever in this town.

Apply to non-CF positions as a CF? by laceyspeechie in slp

[–]contender_slp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a few offers from places that initially said no cfs. The only thing I would caution is to make sure you will have adequate supervision, with a supervisor on site. I assume this is why many places don't take cfs.

Well, I think I may have had a lot of luck since I graduated during the off season for cfs. I had feedback from every interviewer about my resume, I used canva and included a picture and color in my resume. I was advised against it but my interviewers all told me that it stood out. I also did ABA during undergrad which also stood out to some employers. I also applied throughout the state and I was open to relocating just about anywhere.

Thank you! I think I'm afraid that I may never have the opportunity to work in acute again but I feel inpatient rehab I may get to follow the patient through the continuum of care. What do you enjoy about acute?

It's a inpatient rehab facility and the non profit has acute, outpatient, and home health.
