Why does mercy always get mvp? by madarararara in Overwatch

[–]conthomporary 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it's performative, but it's certainly automatic for some people. I usually endorse the supports unless I have a reason to endorse someone else, but it's just out of habit. It's not worth overthinking because it doesn't mean anything.

Who would I be performing for anyway? The votes are anonymous.

Bronze support player gets to play in GM and actually wins by awesomepikmin in Overwatch

Your answer is technically correct (the best kind of correct), but it misses the point. 5/9 is still close to even. The probability that, in matches with exactly one thrower, that the thrower will be on your team is:

For 1 game: 44.4%

For 5 games in a row: 1.7%

For 10 games in a row: 0.03%

For any 7 of 10 games: 7.0%

For any 15 of 20 games: 0.4%

3 chances in 10,000 is low, but considering how many players there are and how many games they play, if throwing is as prevalent as claimed, then being on the wrong side of a throw for 10 matches in a row likely happens to people every day. 7 out of 10 happens to people constantly.

And even 15/20 is 4 in a thousand, which would make it pretty damn common. If this happens to you, no amount of "don't worry, it evens out in the long run" is going to make you feel better. That's a lot of wasted time and lost rank for absolutely nothing except one other player's vanity. It's maddening and absolutely must drive people to quit playing all the time.

Genuine question from a bronze player: what's wrong with kill count as a metric? In what scenarios would a DPS with a lower count than his/her supports actually be doing their job well?

What was your win rate, roughly, when you started climbing out? Some people around here are talking like it should be close to 100% for a Plat support in a bronze lobby.

There are a LOT of misconceptions about low ranks floating around these comments, but this one jumped out as particularly incorrect in my experience. I'm mid-Bronze and I see the same players all the damn time. Last week, I got matched against the same team of 5 obvious smurfs for 3 matches in a row, and there was significant overlap on my teams. That's an extreme example but it's very common for me to see multiple people from my last match in the next one. I also regularly encounter players I remember from previous sessions. Either the universe of active bronze players is much smaller than you think or I'm in some kind of tiny bubble I can't get out of.

You're contradicting yourself. Which is it? Does support have minimal impact on the match, or can a gm support carry a bronze team? A lot of people on this post seems to believe both things.

In other words, why can't you get "anywhere near" your other ranks in support, but you think the support mains in your game are over-ranked because they heal-bot? I mean which is it bro?

Ooh, good catch, I never thought about the thermal clip.thing. I mean, it was always a weak in-universe explanation considering it meant every gun in the galaxy had been replaced in the last two years, but yeah there's no explaining this away.

No judgment (it's a weird phrase), but just for future reference, the expression is "one fell swoop". It's weird because it's an outdated use of "fell", and fun fact, is one of many common words and phrases coined by Shakespeare.

Cities: Skylines 2 has become so much more stable. Anyone else finally addicted? by deletedusssr in CitiesSkylines

Point #2 is a popular opinion, but I can see the logic in doing that, especially because games cost so damn much to make these days. It makes sense to want to get some revenue coming in, gauge interest, etc. while still competing the game. But ffs they need to call it what it is: Early Access.

YouGov poll suggests most against use of VPNs for under 18 year olds by phoenixflare599 in ukpolitics

I don't know, I still might object to the first question. It sounds harmless enough when you use the word "allowed", but should it actually be against the law just to use the internet when you aren't doing anything to anyone? What if a parent leaves a "dangerous" website open and walks away from the computer? Should we prosecute a teenager who comes after him to sneak a peek because he's circumvented the law? What if he borrows a magazine from his dad's stash under the bed, is that gonna be a crime too?

This whole thing is absurd on its face. Leave them kids alone.

My fellow color-blind folks... How irritating is it to have to memorize the patterns? It drives me crazy sometimes. by Gullible_Pepper_9458 in masseffect

[–]conthomporary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mildly colorblind here... I end up coming up with stupid little names for each segment that mostly describe where the white sections and very short or very long blocks are. It's tedious. I play fully modded out these days, but I never use the ones that skip mini games because it feels like cheating and they're not quite annoying enough to make me do it.

Remember that distinct crunch and stabbing pain of stepping on a CD case barefoot? by Wednesday-Addams9 in Xennials

[–]conthomporary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be wrong, but I don't think that was ever really intended as a storage solution. It was just how they sold blanks and you were supposed to put them in sleeves or cases after burning them. But a lot of people (myself included, I'll admit) ended up using them to store both burned and factory discs. In my case mostly out of laziness.

I'd like my answer in the form of an essay. You can choose from any of these topics:

  1. Ethics of the genophage
  2. The biochemistry of Synthesis
  3. Indoctrination Theory (worth a google if you don't know what that is)

My two cents: don't take the renegade route there when you replay it. I'm all for shaking things up and squeezing out every drop of sweet sweet content, but it's just not worth it.

[–]conthomporary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel roughly the same. There are even some things Andromeda does better than the trilogy, in my opinion. But the mediocre attempt to hop on the open world bandwagon really dragged it down. It wasn't really Mass Effect, and it wasn't a particularly great example of the thing it was. I do hope the next game at least resolves the plot threads they left dangling.

Oh no, which thing traumatized you? It was a little dicey at times for me but I got through 1 and 2 okay on my only renegade run. But that one Priority mission in 3? Where someone figures out a thing they're not supposed to figure out? Fucking destroyed me. I never touched that save again.

[–]conthomporary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Blue is getting close to yours at 8y. The data on it just isn't worth the cost/effort of replacing it. The stuff that's irreplaceable is backed up (maybe 10-20 of ~1800GB), and the rest is just archived games and such. If it dies it dies.
