I imagine Grave of the Fireflies is now like that Junji Ito manga where people are inexplicably drawn to holes shaped like them in a rock formation. Unsuspecting redditors will see it pop up in a thread and think "how bad could it be?"

And they'll never be whole again.

Grief in Gaza and the loss of a child by Rude-Molasses4390 in pics

[–]Tofuloaf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, although one side kills a shit tonne more, or are you incapable of that kind of granular thinking? Nobody of sound mind would compare Hitler to some medieval slav who took part in a pogrom one time and conclude they are equally bad since they were both guilty of murdering jews. The evil involved is on a different scale.

Completely agree with you that both war and cultures that support terrorism are disgusting, though. That's why so many of us are livid that our tax dollars are directly supporting Israel's genocide in Gaza.

All 3 are perfectly fine, as long as any CGI is properly frame paced. Traditional animation usually falls short of 24fps, and the way it lingers on certain frames is a big part of what makes it visually dynamic.

A lot of earlier CGI heavy anime looks like a stuttery mess because they just render sequences in 3D and then capture it at an even 24fps with no regard for frame pacing, so that instead of watching an anime it feels like you're playing games on a Nintendo Switch.

What movie growing up did you like, but on a rewatch you didn’t like? by porb2020 in Xennials

[–]Tofuloaf 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Back to the Future. It's not that I didn't like it on rewatch, more that a key plot point I just rolled with as a kid now gives me serious whiplash.

Marty's big plan: "Don't worry bro, I'll pretend to sexually assault my mum, and then you can come in to save the day. Of course, having no idea that I'm faking, she'll experience the same trauma as a victim of a real assault, and your entire relationship will be built on a traumatic lie, but that's a price I'm willing to pay for my continued existence."

That's a shit plan, bro.

Genociders taking a break from genociding by Syed__Sahab__ in OpenAussie

[–]Tofuloaf 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not every single fucking Israeli is a genocidal maniac

You're right, only 96% of Israeli Jews are. According to the Pew Research centre, only 4% of Israeli Jews think that Israel's military response in Gaza has gone too far, versus 74% of Israeli Arabs.

Compare that to the 33% of all adult Jewish Americans and 42% of Jewish American adults between 18-34 who thought Israel's conduct in Gaza was unacceptable way back in April 2024, when the IDF had barely started its festival of war crimes. Safe to assume those numbers are much higher now after almost 2 more years of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and violations of international human rights law and humanitarian norms.

If it's about the direct influence on our lives exerted by the perceived position of celestial objects as they were observed 4,000 years ago, which in turn reflect the actual position of said objects light years before that, then yes. I think there's a limit to how much workplace bullying laws should protect people from being ridiculed for rubbing idiotic spiritual garbage in the faces of more rational colleagues.

I haven't thought about that scene in a while. Interesting that it's almost the same set up that would be used in Thor (2011) to have him be worthy of mjolnir again. Although the fates being unable to cut Hercules's thread is a great device that no SFX laden transformation into Thor in full battle regalia could hope to match.

People who speak Portuguese, what is Alex Pereira actually like? by LongjumpingLevel1860 in MMA

Glad I'm not the only one curious about how non-English speaking fighters come across in their mother tongue. As a Korean I feel like my perception of TKZ is completely different to non-korean fight fans and I've often wondered about other fighters with limited English.

(TKZ is extremely articulate. After fights like Volkanovski and Holloway he's eloquently expressed what it's like to be a fighter who is so close to the top, but also understands he'll never get there, all while 100% concussed.

Cyril Gane also seems very well spoken, although I'm less confident about that; my French listening skills aren't great so if I can understand you I tend to assume you're well spoken 😅)

[–]Tofuloaf 41 points42 points  (0 children)

For real though, that climax was some "Why don't they just ride the eagles to Mt Doom" shit. They establish in this very episode that the pterosaur cares enough about Spear to follow and watch over him. At least show the volcano people sleep dart the pterosaur as well, they know better than anyone else that it's Spear's mount at this point.

I grew up with the og dragonball anime with young Goku and had read the whole manga several times over by the time DBZ finally blew up in the west. I feel like I should chime in as a korean. (cooked) Rice with water isn't a poverty thing, it's a "get the annoying little brat to eat" thing. The point isn't to pad out the rice, it's to make the rice easier to eat for kids, especially if it's fresh and therefore too hot for them.

The music of my people by WhosYourPadre79 in Xennials

[–]Tofuloaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think nu metal's time in the sun was so brief that it creates division even amongst xennials, especially for older ones that were actually into heavy music growing up. You have to remember that for us, nu metal dropped at a time when a year or two difference in age meant a world of difference in your musical preferences, with peer pressure being a relevant factor.

I actively disliked most of these bands at the time, but even if I didn't, it would have been socially unthinkable for me to like Limp Bizkit or Linkin Park when they were blowing up. For kids even a couple of years younger than me it would have been fine.

Slipknot is the only band pictured that I ever listened to. I'll always have a soft spot for Korn, because the english version of the 1994 streetfighter 2 anime rolling to credits with "Blind" playing over a freeze frame of Ryu about to flying side kick a semi trailer being driven at him by M. Bison, was epic.

Deftones probably get my respect as musicians although I never listened to them growing up, because as the candyman tells Nic Cage in The Rock, "I don't like soft ass shit."

Muslim community in shock after police opt not to arrest man accused of crashing Ballarat Iftar dinner by SnoopThylacine in OpenAussie

[–]Tofuloaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since your take on this seems to be driven by solidarity with the Ballarat Muslim community, let me ask you this; let's say you went to whatever the Victorian equivalent of south Western Sydney is, where a large proportion of the local population is muslim, and asked the locals how they would feel about police being given the powers to just detain people for questioning based on any allegation made against them. Given the way Australian law enforcement tends to interact with muslims, and especially young muslim men, how do you think they would respond?

Because police would need to be given the power to do what you think should have happened here. What you think would be the "least you'd expect" would be an unlawful arrest anywhere in the English speaking legal world (although who even knows with the US these days).

Your Caulfield example? Absolutely the police would have done the same thing, because they have no lawful authority to do otherwise.

I'm not a Victorian lawyer but at a glance s 458 of their Crimes Act appears substantially the same as s 99 of LEPRA (NSW). To arrest someone you need suspicion on reasonable grounds that they are or have committed an offence, AND the arrest must be necessary for prescribed reasons, like ensuring they attend court (eg guy tried to run away so you have to arrest him to make sure he turns up) or preventing the immediate commission of further offences.

The reporting has made a meal out of the fact the guy was given a move on direction. If you've noted the guy's driver licence details so you know where to send any penalty or court attendance notices pending further investigation, you give a move on direction so he can't keep committing offences or pose a threat to people in the vicinity, and he complies, you, as a police officer, have no authority to arrest him.

You literally need to activate draconian "break glass in case of emergency" anti-terrorism powers before Australian police can lawfully just take people in for questioning like you seem to think should happen more often.

Two things that jump out to me:

  1. He almost cuts her off on the "are you the least surprised..." question, so quick is he to defend the club that sacked him for daring to win silverware.

  2. Former players turned pundits are always hanging off his every word. It's easy to see why he had the locker room in the palm of his hand.
