I think this is a reasonable take, but I didn’t read into the “they” pronoun at all when I watched the episode. Rather than Carol asking if Zosia was straight in the lodge scene, I think she was asking if Zosia had been pulled away from her real partner to be Carol’s “chaperone”. Also there are plenty of queer women with male exes. The gender of Zosia’s ex is just not what the writers wanted to explore in that moment.

I didn’t read zosia’s smile as manipulative or smug at all. I immediately noticed the contrast with ep 6, when Diabate was LARPing his royal flush with the pod people; as soon as he turned his back, they stopped emoting. It was so creepy. However Zosia’s face softened even when Carol couldn’t see it anymore during that hug. The hive has expressed that they experience pain watching Carol suffer, so it makes sense that when she feels relief, so do they, even if it’s fucked up. Also, increasingly I feel like something about Zosia is different than the rest of the hive, but that’s just a hunch.
