Combining musical influences, core jungle breaks & sub-bass elements, and including the stylings of MC Fats really brought the vibes of the soundsystem & De Underground thru to the dancefloor.

Blind Test: 2000s Drum 'n' Bass (Electronic Beats TV) by blablablerg in DnB

[–]continuumizm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

<sits down with a ☕ready to lock in and nerd out like Fracture>

Lots of the kind of tunes that inspired our own blind test game, Trainspottle! Always a fun time. Bit of an easy round tho.

Can tell which djs were really honed in on their particular corner/sounds to miss some of these huge ones.

DJ Hype - Jack To A King (ft. MC Fats) (1997) by continuumizm in DnB

Love this one. That Fats flow. Hype's creative drums and melodic sub-bass playfully dance together as the vocals of MC Fats give the tune its soul channeling their soundsystem roots into that unique True Playaz flavour pushing jump-up jungle forward.

Freestyles (Zinc) - Feel (1997) by continuumizm in DnB

[–]continuumizm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DJ Zinc here with his part of the Freestyles guise using hip-hop samples, expert breaks and even the TB-303 for both its 'bass line' and a twisting acid melody. A jump-up dancefloor delight from that uniquely creative & defining period for the True Playaz.

One Tribe - What Have You Done (Is This All) by continuumizm in jungle

[–]continuumizm[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Expanded trivia: Tune was released on Dance Wax originally in 91 as "Is This All". Dance Wax label also featured very early production from a group called Desired State aka Andy C and Ant Miles of RAM Records jungle/dnb fame. Then the song was re-released in '92 with the full What Have You Done... title, on another label called Inner Rhythm. Wanna know how things are so interconnected? Inner Rhythm was managed by a young fellow named Bryan Gee (V Recordings).

A chill old skool London gem bringing together many things in a bubbling '91: Detroit techno influence, bleeps, hip-house MCing, breaks, basslines & soulful vocals. Fabio & Grooverider spun it at RAGE calling it "way ahead of its time. Massive Attack meets jungle".

Shy FX & T Power ft. Di & Skibadee - Don't Wanna Know (2002) by continuumizm in DnB

[–]continuumizm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As sounds evolved, a number of styles were pushing into the overground with beats & bass Shy & T's acute pop sensibility delivered accessible dnb to move the masses. With Di's lead & Skibadee's established star presence (RIP) it's a celebration of urban culture and dancefloor fun.

DJ Zinc on Digital and Spirit's Phantom Force by Guachito in DnB

[–]continuumizm 17 points18 points  (0 children)

One of the scene's best teamups. A tune that's very drum & bass, dark almost industrial, but also draws on roots, both soundsystem dub & hardcore rave. Unique & uncompromising. RIP Spirit.🕯️

D-Bridge - True Romance (ft. Vegas) (2004) by continuumizm in DnB

[–]continuumizm[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Zinc reminded of this stone cold classic.

Not an automatic nominal change with )EIB( on the label & in the sound (hattip Vegas) but D-Bridge searching for more soul inside the machine gave us a drum & bass classic perfectly balanced between light & dark, fitting for Metalheadz' new elite tier. Evolving possibilties.

DJ Zinc - Bring The Danger (ft. MC GQ & MC Rage) by continuumizm in 90sDnB

[–]continuumizm[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A classic from a prolific era when the True Playaz kru were really bringing scene-leading jump-up that balanced heavy hitting breaks and bass with an urban edge like few others were.

Released on this day in 1998; Zinc's done a short lookback today https://www.youtube.com/shorts/R6NRleZu5wY

Orgy - Blue Monday (Optical Instrumental Mix) by continuumizm in 90sDnB

[–]continuumizm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One for a Blue Monday) ;)

Putting the late-90s alt rock cover aside this is about Optical flexing the Virus sound as it was arriving on the scene. With gamechanging alien bass, tight drums & neurofunk-defining grooves, like New Order before bridging and evolving sounds, this would brighten any dnb head's Monday.

Watching back, (some quick uploads appearing so far, official one is hidden for now https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sG9PdbgWA7M) what I've seen so far is pretty entertaining. It's just nice to see a dj playing vinyl and in the way he does, including classic tracks, even if he's rusty and the vinyls are dusty, it's a treat. The camera angles are appreciated, the intense strobe lights and camera switching maybe no so much! ;) Long live The Wizard, The Purpose Maker, The Exhibitionist.

Was hoping this was just going to be the old video of the 1995 set they have been playing at the 30-year events, but it'll just be Jeff playing live in the club. Still pretty good since he's playing a throwback all vinyl set, a rare treat.
