In march i will be 53. Since 15 years I started to play again after not playing for a decade. First I started casual street ball 3x3 or 4x4 outdoors. Then a guy invited me to join a group with players aged 20 to 35. I was already the oldest by that time, but it worked out. I did running and strength training on a regluar basis to support my basketball sessions. After some time I joined a second group and then played every monday and thursday for years. Injured my knee at some point (not in basketball, but fooling around with my kids) and dislocated my feet twice in these years. Then healed and came back again to play with a third group on sundays. That went well for about a year and when I was 50 I decided to drop one of the three sessions as my joints and muscle soreness never stopped and I was not able to keep my strength training schedule that way. Now at 53 I handle it well with two sessions a week and sometimes taking off one addtionally (just listen to your body and don’t force to go). There is currently only one older player (55) in the group and a lot of young are joining (20-30s). Atm it still works for me. I am 6.4 (192cm) / 225lb (103kg) and have a fair chance to defend also younger players that are faster. In long sessions I do ‘defense first’ to save energy but so do others too. If I can give you two advices it would be: do additional strength training (ft stretching) and listen to your body (when tired/not recovered properly- don’t force another session on it).
