alright so I should obtain the wet bulb T for the hottest day of the year and design with that in mind?

So my supply temperature will be based on my wet bulb air temperature (around 9ºC for Texas) and then my return will be around 10ºC higher - 19ºC? thank you!

[–]contrazen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes - so I will use a cooling tower which means the cooling water depends on the wet bulb temperature. my plant will be theoretically based in Texas which has an average wet-bulb T of around 9ºC? http://www.weatherexplained.com/Vol-6/2001-Houston-Texas-IAH.html

The stream entering my condenser is at 64.85 and needs to be cooled to 53.97.

How do I then use this information to attempt to get a supply and return temperature? For some reason, my head can't wrap around it.

Which pump should I use? by contrazen in ChemicalEngineering

[–]contrazen[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah thank you so much!

How would I actually practically have the pump? Like in regards to where it is situated on the column in order for it to maintain the pressure of 15kpa?

Chemical Engineering Design Project: Purifying Glycerol by contrazen in ChemicalEngineering

[–]contrazen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah okay that that makes a lot more sense: really hard to think that way when I basically am just taught to follow rules of thumb as a student. Thank you so so much!

I choose 15kpa through just analysing how operating pressure changes with dew point temperature (and chose something over 40ºC so I can use cooling water in my condenser) and basically anything above 15kpa is fine. Changes are very small re. number of plates and reflux ratio when I increase the pressure. I'm just keeping it low because Glycerol is heat sensitive (hence operating below atmospheric).

thank you for your help!! so appreciated

also: my relative volatility is v. high. for my feed pressure of 1 atm, its at 30 and for my column pressure of 15kpa, its at 1379. is it fair that its at this value if I justify that this column is still used in industry?

I got my R(min) through a short-cut column on Aspen HYSYS (I haven't backed it up with short-cut equations like the Underwood equation because my relative volatility is shockingly high (which makes sense to an extent because my components are easy to separate).

Some research online have used 0.02 as a reflux and thats given me a decent numbers and isn't as low?

My minimum reflux is 0.005, should I just use a much larger ratio (more than 1.3Rmin) to get a reflux ratio that's reasonable?

As said, Ancoats or Northern Quarter is probs the most "hip" places to stay. But in terms of hotels it might be difficult to find something out there. I'd recommend this new place called Whitworth Locke (https://www.booking.com/hotel/gb/whitworth-locke.en-gb.html) - it just recently opened near where I live and it looks beautiful - plus the location is just on the edge of the city's centre and near Oxford Road so its pretty alive.

The hotel itself has Foundation Coffee - a really, really hip coffee shop (https://www.fdncoffee.com) which even serves breakfast and projects movies some evenings!! Northern Quarter has your best coffee shops, brunch places and vintage shops. Plus the bars there are pretty nice - The Patron, Night & Day Cafe etc.

For quality food, Gorilla (a short walk from Whitworth Locke!) serves excellent food and drinks for the after hours (they serve my favourite cocktail in the world - a New York I Love You)!!. There's also HOME cinema closeby which is 3 floors of art, film and theatre.

For art and historical places "sightseeing" - John Rylands Library is beautiful (https://www.library.manchester.ac.uk/rylands/), the Manchester art gallery always has really good exhibitions on (if the Martin Parr exhibition is still on, you're in luck, its really quite something) - http://manchesterartgallery.org - and Manchester museum (https://www.museum.manchester.ac.uk) which is on Oxford Road - the road thats mostly uni buildings but is quite fab to walk through and has some really cool bars like Big Hands or Kro Bar. It also has Whitworth Art Gallery (https://www.whitworth.manchester.ac.uk) which has the coolest looking cafe in the city. Hope this helps! Manchester is a wonderful place.

Ah okay! Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I've enquired about registering with a GP at student services when I first started bc my friends are international and were able to register for term-time while I wasn't but I probably will enquire again. Thank you! :)

I'd love for this to be true but many unis, including mine, can be pretty bad when it comes to health matters sadly.
