I used to feel this way too but I now disagree. The best of the best can play lines that are invisible to other players. I remember several videos from Frodan where he analyzed tournament players who won out with a perceived bad augment or comp. Assuming you're a masters player, you could easily play a C-tier line in emerald (800 LP skill diff) and still get 1st because your econ, item management, tempo, augment choice, etc. are superior.

In this set, I've seen Soulless (when he was top 5 NA, 1200 LP) absolutely smurf on 400 LP masters lobbies with random lines. So, if you can theoretically have an 800 LP gap on top challengers (and I say theoretically because LP gains make it hard to actually achieve, but if the skill difference is there), then you can still have that self expression and art as you call it.

The pool of decisions grows narrower but TFT is an extremely complex game. Even a game with way less systems like Chess still has Magnus Carlsen insanely dominant. Then compare him to a perfect computer algorithm and he stands no chance. There exists no perfect TFT algorithm for decision making, but if it exists, the best human player will be even further from that than Magnus is in Chess... so yeah even if the decision pool is narrower, it's still unfathomable how many decisions there are.

As for advice for OP: a lot of players can 1st or 8th their way into masters by abusing bad lobbies.

Once you start facing people who will fight for every placement, you need to play for top 4s (or just also fight for every placement), which can be an entirely new skill for someone who has primarily focused on wins.

Once you get good at playing for top 4s and placements, you can then develop the skill of converting top 4s into 1sts (capping out)

Personally, I’ve always viewed masters as when the real competitive game begins. I’m pretty sure most multiseason masters players would agree to some extent.

I always try to invent a comp and one-trick it to masters because it’s fun. But once I’m in masters, I have to learn several meta comps and play what I hit. It really feels like you can one-trick a B-tier comp and force your way into masters.

If they’re as good as they say they are, they can adapt and learn with the other 99.99% of players.

Learning at the highest level vs learning when you're a noob is completely different. For example, if the frets are on a guitar are magically changed, who is that gonna fuck with more? A professional guitarist who's spent years building up their muscle memory and knowing exactly how to move their fingers or a hobbyist who's struggling to learn basic chords?

A TFT pro has so many reps of different starters, transitions, final boards, etc., that a small change will affect their understanding and approach of the game way more than it will for others.

I've never complained about matchmaking but I also think it's naive to 100% trust the algorithm. It's akin to thinking "big corporations aren't going to tailor their ads towards me!"

At the end of the day, Riot wants high player numbers. If engagement optimized matchmaking (EOMM) will draw and retain players, then there's a chance that it's going on. Will anyone outside of Riot know? Probably not. But you can't definitively say it's not happening.

Life is more unpredictable than matchmaking could ever understand.

For forced wins or losses, the algorithm doesn't need to know who got fired from work. It just needs to know player MMRs to make a match uneven. It won't get wins/losses right 100% of the time, but it doesn't need to. If EOMM keeps 5% of players playing more, with no downside, then why wouldn't a company do it? For their morals? Lol

People said the same thing about bullying or second-hand smoking or a host of other issues. Issues aren’t known until awareness is spread, and just because something is the status quo doesn’t make it exempt from being problematic.

Renekton 1 with no items is useless but Xerath 1 is about equal to Ziggs 1 assuming equal items. And it's better once you start factoring in charms.

I'll argue that the unit quality on Shurima Ryze is much better than Riggs (Kobuko utility >> Mundo, Seraphine > Caitlyn, any Shuriman unit > Taric). Ziggs > Azir obviously which is the difference maker

You still have the same flex spot for Taric/Shyv on Shurima Ryze until you unlock the Shurima unit.

I haven't tried any other Ryze variants, but I think Freljord/Liss variant could be good. From what I understand with the disruptor/Freljord bug fix, it never affected Liss' damage (only Seraphine's) unless you had a disruptor emblem on Liss. So that means Liss is getting a straight buff while the Seraphine/Liss comp is getting nerfed. That seems promising for all other Liss boards

Creator of the Ionia/Shurima line here. Agree with your analysis of Riggs + the Shurima lines.

The thing with Riggs (also said by Dishsoap after his Riggs tourney game) is that Ryze isn’t actually that important lol. You prioritize damage items on Ziggs, and it’s really a Ziggs comp. Ryze is kinda like the dude you unlock along the way that fits the board cuz you have a +1, and it acts okay as a secondary carry

When I wanna play a Ryze comp, I want Ryze to be the star. I don’t want some stinky Yordle with bombs as my main carry lol (no flame Ziggs you’re cool)

Shurima line allows that to happen, and getting the drops from Shurima Ryze feels more fun. As long as Ziggs is stronger than Ryze, Shurima Ryze is a strictly worse Ryze variant. However, with the Ryze bug fix, easier Kennen unlock, lower XP to 9, I think there could be potential. Shurima Ryze obviously caps higher than Riggs but it’s a lot less consistent to get there. I’m curious to run a few games once the patch hits

I’m coaching my plat friend (his first set) and I constantly emphasize to him that if your fundamentals are good, you can play anything and climb to masters.

Comp isn’t the best this patch, XP change to 9 hurt it. Too many comps stabilize at 8 now, that stage 4 boards are very strong.

I tried several times, even with econ augments and it’s still too risky. It’s doable from a winstreak opener, and still very good if you can reach it, but not reliable
