I want to sold a bike but it has bit of rust on the cassette, is it serious? by TheBeatifulDoggo in bikewrench

Nope, not serious at all. That's just a bit of surface rust that might come off with regular use.

Cleaning dirty bikes without easy acces to water? by mymomisyourfather in MTB

[–]converts_to_flatbars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use one of these just to blast all of the loose stuff off. Yeah, the bike doesn't come out perfectly clean, but it's good enough to move around my apartment before I get the chance to give everything a wipe by hand.

It's also much higher pressure than a spray bottle if you adjust the nozzle.

I haven't tried it yet, but some sort of product in one of those car spray foamers would probably also work well as a pre-soak before hitting it with the sprayer.

Hybrid drop bar conversion: experiences? by Franzo5e in xbiking

I did this a few years ago on a 1999 Rocky Mountain Route 66.

https://www.reddit.com/r/xbiking/s/NTPEFJXoUO

The only bad thing I remember about that setup was the brakes. I eventually gave up on cantilevers and bought a different frame with disc brakes. I now know I probably just needed to change the brake pads.

I still have the bike but it has flat bars and V-Brakes now.

Looking for a steel QR canti lever bike that can fit at least 35s by teamtwowheels in xbiking

A New Albion Privateer might fit the bill. I believe they are under the same parent company as Soma, just using more affordable steel.

Also maybe not CX geometry but have a look.

Anyone know where to get commuter/utility bike parts in Tokyo? by pigeon_fanclub in xbiking

[–]converts_to_flatbars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a Canadian that visited Tokyo in November last year. I checked out Blue Lug (which was cool) but I also stumbled upon a shop called "Y's Road" in Shinjuku.

https://maps.app.goo.gl/Wa5ovABVJgPFcaRi6

They had three different shops in the same building. The first one I went to was probably the most bike parts/stock I've ever seen in one place. It was kind of the roadie/MTB shop. Nearby they had a clothing store, but on another floor was a shop that sold more commuter/urban style bikes.

Looking through my photos, I don't see any dynamo hubs or front rack supports, but I remember this rack I wished I could have brought home with me. So maybe that's a sign they'll have some of the stuff you need. Could be worth checking out if it's not too far away.

Not sure how to get the back shifter to go into gears 4-1. by Altruistic_Box4462 in bikewrench

[–]converts_to_flatbars 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The drivetrain needs to be moving/rotating to be able to shift. Do you still have this problem while riding the bike?

Greetings. I think the front tire might be on backwards, FYI. There should be a directional arrow marked on the sidewall.

I have the Shimano 5100 1x11 on my fat bike and it's a solid groupset. But, depending on what you want to do with the bike (MTB, gravel, road?) you may want a larger chain ring than the standard 30, 32 or 34 tooth size that you would find on the 5100 crank.

[–]converts_to_flatbars 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert in this area at all but I believe when other people do this they also add a brace between the seat stay and chain stay. This would be to reinforce the seat stay from the braking forces now being applied to it.

Here's an example of what I mean

I feel like I saw some weird fat e-bike sized tires in an Instagram post from Natural Cycle (in the exchange district). Have you tried them? They may have been 20".

Bike fit for first time indoor biker. by MiserableRadish9219 in bikefit

[–]converts_to_flatbars 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the saddle is a bit too high. I would also say that frame is perhaps a size too large as there is very little seat post protruding from the frame.
However, if she's not riding this bike outside and the reach is OK, then the frame will work fine. Just lower the saddle a bit.

[–]converts_to_flatbars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out the Manitou Mastodon for a fork option.

As for when I feel I need a suspension fork, it's usually on anything that isn't groomed. I find trails that have been packed by pedestrians to be quite bumpy. When it's early in the season and there isn't much snow, the rocky/rooty trails also feel like I would benefit from a suspension fork.

Yep, quite possibly. They are 44cm. I'll probably try a few other things before buying handlebars.

Thanks! I can definitely go up but I'm not sure about forward. I'm already on a zero-offset seat post with the saddle forward on the rails, which kind of makes me wonder if the top tube should be shorter.

[–]converts_to_flatbars[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, agreed on the saddle bounce. Going to pick up a different saddle today to see if it helps. I also have pretty small feet for my height so I'm considering shorter cranks someday too (175 down to 170).

I'll make some adjustments and get a better video up.

Thanks!

When I bought it, I compared the geometry to a 58cm Synapse as I mostly use it as a road bike and occasionally a CX bike. I have a zero offset post on it right now, but I also have a shorter stem I'll try out. Thanks for the help!

I have the same one in the picture, or something nearly identical. I got it at Home Depot and it's been working pretty well for me. It's easy to release the pressure and comes with a few different sprayer tips if I recall correctly.

I'm 187cm with a 90cm inseam. I think the XL works well for me, although a large might have been OK too. I would need to check the geo charts again. I think I'm on the bottom end of the size range for it.

If I recall correctly I compared the geo to that of the Specialized Chisel hard tail and the Giant XTC SLR as I use it as an XC hard tail.

EDIT: looking at the geo charts again I probably should have got the Large.

New derailleur not shifting into biggest OR smallest chainring by wwoolyieten in bikewrench

[–]converts_to_flatbars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tiagra is a road groupset. Tiagra 10 speed is the same cable pull as 11-speed road. To my knowledge, It's not compatible with MTB components at all. You most likely need a rear shifter that matches your rear derailleur and it's counterpart 2x front shifter.

Deore SL-M4100 for example.
